welp... lets see what happens tomorrow.

This has really turned into a H.S. relationship. If this holds true, these two just need to part ways for good. Sprint just find a cable company or buy out US Cellular if Son is that bent on merging Sprint with something.  OR just buy out the other 20%, and run Sprint the way you envisioned it as it it was merged with whoever.

Now hope that they remain friends and somehow share networks.  Figure out how to allow full no charge extended LTE roaming on each other.

Bring in US Cellular to the party.

Shake hands and build a killer network by co-operating against the bigger two.

T-mobile is well situated to build a rural 600 network.  Sprint is well situated to build a killer 2500 network in high density areas.

Agree to jointly engineer, build and share the best network nationwide.

SoftBank is in a real bind here:

It can't give Sprint more money: SoftBank's covenants with Japanese banks prevent sinking more cash into Sprint.

It has to stay below 85% ownership of Sprint: The New Sprint certificate of incorporation as in effect at the effective time of the SoftBank Merger will provide that, in the event that the combined voting interest of SoftBank and its controlled affiliates in New Sprint exceeds 85% of the outstanding voting securities of New Sprint, then SoftBank or a controlled affiliate will make an offer to acquire all the remaining shares of New Sprint common stock at a price not less than the volume-weighted average closing price of New Sprint common stock for the 20 consecutive trading days immediately preceding such offer.

Perhaps it also may not be able to buy all of Sprint because of U.S Government contract regulations that limit or prevent dealings with wholly owned foreign corporations.

I'll throw this into mix.  WSJ seems a little more definitive in saying deal is off. subhead says Sprint will invest instead.  Don't have a subscription anymore so I can't get behind the paywall and read the full story.

SoftBank to Drop Effort to Merge Sprint With T-Mobile

Sprint said to be planning significant investment in its network

Wow. I can't read the article due to subscribing. Where there any good tidbits about this "significant investment in the network?"

Sprint and Charter makes more sense, to be honest.

Gives Sprint and SoftBank some landline assets and a very modest amount of content. Spectrum areas could be covered better with small cells.

Trying to get T-Mobile through, while it would have been unreal as far as coverage and speed goes, was too much of a pain.

Masa buys Charter, he has an actual cash cow that could generate profit to invest in wireless. Plus, if he then decided to sell Sprint to T-Mobile later, he'd have Charter to package in with it.

Dish's stock is up on this... lol

Makes sense! Dish's spectrum might be attractive to T-Mobile. Actually its 600Mhz spectrum might be attractive to Sprint or some other spectrum holding company associated with Softbank :D

They are not going to share networks. Project fi hasn't been a stellar success and there isnt a good economic argument for it. Hopefully, t mobile can transform into a third player without sprint otherwise we are stuck with the duopoly.

It doesnt have to go away but it will eventually not be a factor in the wireless industry.  Unless sprint gets a massive injection of cash it won't be an important player in the wireless industry. Son already tried shopping for investment and no one bit.

But no one wanted to invest in sprint in 2017 and that is the point. Son is the only one who thinks sprint is worth what he thinks it is worth. Maybe he is a genius so far beyond his time that he alone can see something everyone is missing but maybe not.

I think we are starting to see some creativity on this front too. I have a feeling especially given the timing of the announcement in relation to knowing merger talks were effectively stalled in hindsight for the tower company is interesting.

    • Mapped two n41 small cell sin Jersey City today. They're the first two to be mapped there in Jersey City as far as I can tell and interestingly they're consecutive gNBs, possibly indicating they were installed around the same time. gNB 1088335 appears to be an upgrade of an older small cell. It looks identical to the T-Mobile n41 small cell I mapped earlier this year in Old Westbury.   I also mapped gNB 1088334 in Newport. This small cell appears to be a new build as I couldn't find any evidence of an older small cell in that area. Unfortunately no pic of it since I didn't even notice that I mapped it until I got home and I can't find it in Streetview.
    • Someone told me a couple years ago, that there were problems getting certain modems to aggregate overlapping spectrum even if the overlapping parts were actually blanked. So I think there might be firmware issues that need to be resolved first, which T-Mobile might not consider worth the effort for 4MHz at this time.
    • Tbh not that surprising. Every ISP seems to want to have an MVNO to pitch to their customers to make them stickier and maybe make some money in the process. And unlike USCC the MVNO should be able to cover TDS's entire wireline area, with infrastructure costs that are borne by someone else. Entertaining, yes. Surprising, not really...particularly when competing against Comcast or Spectrum, or even eventually T-Mobile fixed + mobile. This also strengthens my bet that they'll rebrand all their fixed wireless stuff as TDS, as that runs on spectrum they're keeping for now.
    • No? RCS on Google messages works great for me, messages between anyone with RCS enabled go through with no problems. Don't remember the last time I had an issue. I only have issues with people on iPhones on different carriers from T-Mobile.
    • Has anyone experienced a ridiculous amount of difficulty with Google messages with RCS enabled?  It has been a train wreck for me for the past year so I now use WhatsApp.  That works very well for all of us.... Android and iOS.
