Network Vision/LTE - New York City Market

Was in Manhattan at the Bowery and 2nd street and was getting a strong LTE signal. A few weeks ago I only had 3G.

back home I've had 4G LTE for quite some time now, but today I decided to check the Signal Check Pro app and noticed that the signal was originating from 115-20 121 street. The only tower I know of that is 4G sprint is in the opposite direction on 109th avenue. That tower on 115 that I know of is AT&Ts. hmmm

I'm currently in Elmont. Speeds aren't great but browsing is doable. Forget about streaming video though, that is a lost cause right now.

Lmaoo tell me about it . You can't do anything on Elmont towers sometimes & I mean sometimes they work & you can do certain things but Streaming Never Happening as of now . The best LTE i've had so far is in Jamaica Queens consistant speeds of 9-15mbps down & 3-5down . When I go to Manhatten LTE speeds are just about NV 3G's peak 2-3mbps down & up. I don't mind bc its useable & it honestly doesn't feel any different to me I just want a stable connection in Manhatten its splotchy .

But I found away around dealing with slow speeds. I had seached NV 3G Upgraded Sites on google & this random Sprint Page poped up . I read through & I found this code for a service update . It said it increased Speeds so me being the way I am tried it . It increased me to my peak Speeds which is 1mbps & going from .20 to that made me extremely happy.

Im getting 2 sometimes 3 bars then back to 3g signal. Not too steady but speeds on lte where around 4 mbps down and 1.5 up. But my 3g speeds are now usable i can watch a youtube video with ease. But then again the city is pretty empty around here today so not much stress on the 3g is a possibilty. Or maybe just network vision taking place. I will know monday when everyone is back to work in the area.

I had to take a trip to midtown and start mapping, it looks like the signal is coming from a tower near 33rd street btwn Madison and 5th Ave, I had strong signal around that area, and was able to map from 23rd street and Madison upto 36th street and around back to 5th ave..Happy to see this section lit up...but I do loose signal on 6th ave and 37th.

Although it may be slow, this is my 1xrtt speed right now. It is perfectly usable for browsing the web. I am in a hospital right now, so my signal gets swallowed up by the thick walls and double pane glass. This signal is coming from a tower that is 3G and 4G accepted. Not to mention I am switching between 0 and 1 bar.

That's my 3G speeds here in downtown Manhattan!!! lol

I hope you are just passing through the hospital and not sick.

No, I'm interning here for the summer. I did it last year, and it was fun so I am doing it again. Not to mention that most of the towers around me are already 4G upgraded, in fact, I think that they were the first in Brooklyn to get 4G.

Great LTE speeds in Ozone Park:

But this is tethered. On the phone I get 13-14/3-6. Is there something hardware or software that's limiting getting these types of speeds on the phone. I'm fine with the phone speeds but I'm just curious cause it's pretty consistent in the difference.

Nope, that should the speed that your phone is getting. Maybe you need to try to run a speedtest on a different server or download RootMetrics as they usually choose servers better than Ookla's Speedtest app.

I'm on the same Towerstream server on the computer and phone. Just tried RootMetrics a couple times and got 13-4/6. I guess I'll chalk it up to network variability.

I've discovered the same thing and realized what the issue was.  The SpeedTest app itself is the issue.

There's actually a setting that will give you a truer picture of your speeds.  By default, SpeedTest isn't giving you the truest speed results.  If you click on the "Tools" button at the bottom of the SpeedTest app, you will see a slider for Better Graphics or Better Performance.  Move it over to "Better Performance".  Now when you run the app, you'll notice considerably higher speeds, but the needle won't change instantly, but rather in stages.

I have an Evo 4G LTE, so results may vary if you have a different device.

sprint might announce new plan. they are keeping unlimited but giving more options to LIMIT the data with cheaper price. I actually really like this. My parents literally use less than 500mb per month if they push it but I honestly dont see why we have to have UNLIMITED for everyone.

Ah. I used to have it all the way to Better Performance with previous phones but thought with the GSIII was powerful enough to keep it on better graphics. I'll give it a try again tomorrow.

FYI, SignalCheck may not be have the exact site address, unless Sprint is not using the offset in NYC: http://www.bluelinepc.com/signalcheck/help/#bslwrong

S4GRU sponsors have access to maps on this forum showing planned and completed sites with exact locations.
