Google doesn't know what carrier you're going to use.  Are they going to send a SIM for every carrier in America?  You have to get the SIM from the carrier, just like with the Nexus 4.

Robert

:wall: That's what I was thinking. This is being a pain!

Standard SIM is 1FF

Mini SIM is 2FF

Micro SIM is 3FF

Nano SIM is 4FF

You need a 3FF to work in a Nexus 5.  My order is for a CZ2102LWR REMOVABLE 3FF USIM GSMLTE

The SIM cards, themselves, are generic, coming from several different manufacturers.  Most people probably have SIMs with their wireless provider branding, but that is not necessary.  The wireless provider just needs to add unactivated SIMs to its database.

So, the Nexus 5 could ship with a SIM.  However, if it does, would Sprint be willing to activate that SIM?

This is definitely plausible.  However, it would be very different than what they did with the Nexus 4.

I believe 2FF is going to be a problem.  We haven't had any devices that use the 2FF come out for 1-1/2 to 2 years.  All recent devices have been 3FF or 4FF.  You probably can cut it down though.

The CSR reps will know this SKU: 760492013536

3FF

That is for the LTE micro SIM that will work on the Nexus 5. Make sure your order shows that. If it doesn't you need to change your order.

Crop, they ordered me the wrong one. I'm getting a 2FF. I'm guessing it'll still work if I just cut it down?

Trust me, you do not want a standard SIM.  Otherwise, you get something this size...

Full-size-SIM-1FF.jpg

You would have better luck trying to use that as a method of payment than getting it to fit inside the Nexus 5.

:P

AJ

That is the same size SIM that came in my first phone (see picture to the left)... I remember looking at it awhile back and thinking about how it was basically the same thing as the tiny SIM cards we use nowadays, cut to size...

No dice AJ. Spatula city maybe . . . or you could just look in the Yellow pages under spatulas.

I secretly love UHF.  I watch it about once a year.  Usually on a cold and snowy day!

Called per guideline above and the person tried to help my however after checking they told me they don't have the Nexus 5 in the system yet and do not know what SIM it would need.  They did however make a note to call me Monday and they think they will have the information by then.  One question, I realized I have a Sprint micro SIM from a Samsung S4 that was exchanged (they told me to keep the SIM for some reason).  Can I just use that one?  Thanks.

I have been on hold for 20 min waiting for them to cancel my 2FF order and get me a 3FF card. ugh.

This is a complete cluster****.  My order is also for a 2FF.  I'll be watching intently to see what happens with you before i proceed.

I wish Sprint would have people ready for this. If I wasn't a much of a tech-geek, i could see ordering this from Google and assuming that i could just activate it easily on Sprint rather than planning ahead with the help of this site.

SUCCESS!!!  Once I had the right place, it went quick.  Here is what you need to do to get a SIM mailed to you:

  • Call 1-888-226-7212
  • At first voice prompt, Enter your phone number or confirm that you are calling from your phone
  • Press 2 for "otherwise..."
  • Press 2 for "International voice or data service"
  • Then you will go into the call queue and wait for an operator

Explain that you need a SIM card for your new Nexus 5 that you purchased directly from Google mailed to you and that you are unable to visit a store to get one.  They couldn't find the Nexus 5 in the system, but they checked with a supervisor and found the same one that will work.  They even said it would come via FedEx, but probably wouldn't go out until Monday or Tuesday.  All for no charge!  I had to pay $20 for my Tmo SIM.

Robert

Didn't work for me, they said they couldn't do anything since the phone isn't out yet.  They also said the stores will have sims when the nexus is officially released.

Failure. I followed Robert's directions and they told me that Google has told them that the SIM kit will be shipped with the phone, and she wanted me to wait until I receive the phone to be sure because she doesn't want to charge me $15 for a SIM.

Somebody somewhere doesn't know what they're talking about. I'm also skeptical about international services providing a SIM for use within the US. Dunno.

They told me sims will be shipped to the store.

Wrong one, they ordered the same one for me. Needs to be a 3FF card.

It takes all of 5 seconds to cut it down to size, all you need is a micro sim template, tape and some sharp kitchen scissors.

Super was a no go. She said they cannot order for a phone they have not released yet...

Same thing they told me.

Crop, they ordered me the wrong one. I'm getting a 2FF. I'm guessing it'll still work if I just cut it down?

Yeah, very easy to cut down. I have done it for a few friends recently.  Just download a micro sim template, get some tape and some kitchen scissors(usually more sturdy and a lot sharper than just regular scissors)
