Why doesn't WiMax Forum just stop upgrading WiMAX and just merge into LTE-TDD?

 

No one is gonna be using WiMAX soon.

I'm off for a grand trip to Denver.  And away we go!

Quick question, how do 2500mhz lte panels look like in Ericson markets?

We are Ericson for  NV1.0 stuff. I don't think you can really say someplace is Ericson for 2500 deployment its not under the original game plan.

All of the pictures were from a Missouri site that the nv1.0 deployment would have been Ericson and he did talk to the installer and the 2500 is for Clearwire LTE.

Finally got my MiFi 500 hotspot fired up. So far, 1900 MHz LTE performance seems about identical to the Note II's. Driving around the east side of Grand Rapids, I couldn't find any 2500 or 800, which, while expected, was still disappointing. We're a completed WiMAX market, so I half expected to pick some up!

Because WiMax is alive and well.

That only makes sense as they're very similar.

 

Why don't they switch to LTE-TDD? I thought WiMAX was compatibile-ish with WiMAX? .

They are very similar as LTE is based off of WiMax.

 

If the whole world is moving away from WiMAX

Is there a good way to see what band your connected to on the MiFi 500? Someone in the Missouri thread was asking how to check.

Doesn't look like there is one from the device's front screen. However, if you connect and go to

http://192.168.1.1/debug

And look in the LTE section. Band Class 25 is 1900 MHz. Anything else is time to be excited.

For those of you who are going to be LTE hunting with the MiFi 500, you can change quite a lot in the data profile settings, provided you have your MSL (which you can get in a variety of ways). Interesting to note is that the device, by default, scans for Band 25 (1900 MHz PCS G-Block LTE), Band 26 next (800 MHz ESMR LTE) and then finally Band 41 (2500 MHz BRS/EBS LTE). A quick reversi on that, maybe a lowering of the LTE scan timer, and I'll go drive around a little more this weekend and see what I can pick up (if anything).

 

Also interesting is that it uses an LTE_Available file, which iirc we saw on the EVO LTE, and few other devices.

To be fair, I've seen like 3-4 people who have iPhones from Detroit. No idea if it's a club or just a "red car effect", but there's definitely more than one!

 

Jeez.. I hope the scans and BSR timers are in seconds and not minutes.

I can only assume so. 300 seconds would be 5 minutes, which is what we've seen on other devices, no?

 

I have no idea what "BSR" is, anyways. What is it?

 

Also: LTE 1900 performance on the MiFi 500 is actually slightly better than the Note II; it was able to pick up a fringe signal at my house (and lose it almost immediately, then pick it back up...) while the Note stays on 3G constantly.

We got severely delayed by a car accident/construction mess in Colorado Springs. We are checked into the hotel and my wife and I are even have a drink together for the first time in years.

 

Down in the basement lounge here I'm still getting a respectable TD-LTE 2600 signal and good speeds.

Better Service Reselection. Basically a trigger to look for a better or higher priority network.

      Yep, there is a label on the side of the box but it doesn't provide any useful info that the city doesn't already provide (Crown Castle Solutions is the franchisee). You can see my graphical interpretation of the city's dataset here.

      Totally agree.  In my county and surrounding counties, TM did not place n-41 on every site.  When I look at the sites in question, I probably would have not placed it there either.  I can find just a few with n-71 only and in most of those cases if you live there and know the probable usage of the residents, you would not do a full upgrade on those sites.  One site in particular is set up to force feed n-71 through a long tunnel on the Turnpike.  No stopping allowed in the tunnel. No stores, movie theaters, bathrooms, so n41 would be a waste.    n25 is not really needed either, so it is not there.  The tunnel is going through & under a mountain with more black bears than people.  TM was smart.  Get good coverage in the tunnel but do not waste many many thousands of dollars with extra unused spectrum. I also see sites with only n71 & n25.  Again this makes sense to me.  Depending on what county we are talking about, they moved much of their b25 from LTE to nr.  Some counties have more n25 than a neighboring county, but luckily, it is plenty everywhere.   When you are in a very rural area, n41 can run up the bills and then be barely used.  I am NOT finding sites that should have had n41 but TM failed to provide it.  They may have to come back later in a few years and upgrade the site to n41.  However, we just may eventually see the last little piece on Band 25 leave LTE and move to n25. I am not sure if the satellite to phone service is using band 25 G block as LTE or nr. We also can possibly have at least some AWS move from LTE to nr at some point.  Yes, everybody wants n41. it is not justified in some cases.  When I travel, I desire some decent service along the entire route but it does not have to be 1 or 2 gig download.   If I can get 50/5 on a speedtest with data that will flow and not stutter, I am very happy. Yes, they will swap out the USC gear.  TM needs to match their existing network. The USCC equipment did the job for years, but it is time to retire it.
