Same reason why T-mobile and Vzw and ATT throws up low band only sites in rural areas.

Optimize sites for coverage and then go back and add mid band and high band if there's demand.

Should I still treat it like roaming coverage? Especially since my phone still thinks it's roaming. I would hate to accidentally hit my 100mb limit.

You phone thinks it's roaming cause of the 1x voice signal. LTE doesn't ever show roaming even when you are

Not data.  Your phone is only displaying roaming because of the 1x roaming signal.  Data is native.  

Don't go over your voice roaming limit though!

Could you elaborate on your findings along 2 in Montana? This is news to me.

The only ones I can guarantee I hit B26 where in Shelby and Glasgow, as I stopped and checked my phone in those towns. I believe I found some in Havre and Malta too, but I since I was passing through, I couldn't pay too much attention. They where close to unusably slow data, but I was authenticated to them and able to use the signals.

My phone (Note 9) is not Volte enabled yet. I use wifi calling for all my calling needs to avoid the voice roaming issue.

I haven't been able to find any 1x800 at all. It's all 1xRTT voice/evdo roaming on "North Dakota PCS Alliance" aka Verizon out here.

Just 5G markets again. But VPN seems to work sometimes to trick Sprint into believing your in that market.

Verizon is / was deploying the Ericsson 5GTF backend systems which is their proprietary 5G pre NR standards setup.

 

The M-mimo equipment on cell towers / light poles are dual mode 5GTF and NR capable. So it's fairly simple for them to just "flip the switch" (simple terms).

 

They had built a completely new standalone system for 5GTF that doesn't really interact with their extensive LTE EPC hence why they can go full stack NR rather than mixed which most carriers will be going with.

Going to the release that's linked in the article, you'll find this quote:

"The new standalone 5G NR software can be installed on existing Ericsson Radio System hardware."

Clicking the link of "Ericsson Radio System" and going about 3/4 of the way down you'll find mention of some antenna models. Sprint is currently using AIR 6468 antennas with the updated AIR 6488 antennas replacing those. Only using those models will there be a software switched upgrade
