Will Sprint charge that stupid $36 fee when you bought from Play Store since they aren't an authorized Sprint dealer (from what I've aware of)

I wonder if iPhones can be done like that?  If it is done like the iPhones, like guessed above, I assume that's how we will need to do it.  I wonder if the N5 will come with a sim card.  That would also be an indicator I suppose if it doesn't come with one and we need one.

I encourage everyone to read Brian Klug's early look today at the Nexus 5. While his take is not a full review -- that is assuredly yet to come -- Brian is the best in the biz at high level technical analysis of current smartphones. But I also want to point out a certain paragraph in Brian's article:

On the LTE side we see the FCC leaks and schematics leaks were spot on. There's a considerable set of LTE band coverage for the USA, including Band 17 and 4 for AT&T, Band 4 for T-Mobile, and 25, 26, and 41 for Sprint (making this another Sprint Spark device), and of course LTE roaming band equivalency with the pentaband WCDMA we've come to expect with newer devices. The only thing that's missing on the USA variant is no Verizon (which should not be a surprise to anyone), and no Band 7 for Canada.

Nearly two months ago -- thanks to the sharp eyes of Josh and Tim -- S4GRU was the little tech outlet that could, the one to break the story on the LG D820 not only as the potential Nexus successor but also as a tri band LTE handset almost certainly headed to Sprint. I think we set the stage for many articles published shortly thereafter and many still to come...

2) so that people could not buy 350-400 dollar off contract unlocked LTE phones that can continue to use grandfathered LTE plans.

No, he means "off". The reason to buy it "ON" contract is because it's cheaper - $199. But "off" contract from Sprint, at full price, it's hundreds more than Google's price.

 

I can think of one reason to buy from google instead of Sprint.  If you get the one up plan it's only $65 for unlimited data and you don't and your not paying the extra $18.75 a month for the phone till you pay off the higher sprint price tag.

Or, wait to see what happens with something like the GS5, saving your upgrade for that.  Rumor of it possibly being a good generational jump processor wise could make a big difference.  My guess is you'll still be able to get rid of a Nexus for a good amount of cash should you decide to use your upgrade at a later date (to keep).

Ive been told if youre activating inline with your current plan (swap) you can do it on Sprints website. But this was from a Sprint store employee...so....

If you have no intention on leaving Sprint why would you pay $350 when you can get it for $150?  Not having a subsidized phone on a carrier that structures its pricing around subsidizing is wasting money.

 

Do they still attach an ETF of $350?

As for your question, why pay $150 (and be locked in) for a $350 phone when you could pay $199 for a $750 phone?

 

As others mentioned, you take the $750 phone, sell it, buy the $350 with cash, and have money leftover for a stripper.

 

 

Also, I know its been answered, but I cant find it. If you activate a google play phone on Sprint, are you locked in for good, or can you pop in a t-mobile sim? How about vice versa?

It is easily worth 200 dollars to me to not be on contract with Sprint. I have no desire to be locked with them for two more years, but need an LTE phone to actually see what the service is like. Since this cost almost the same as the iphone I would have bought on contract. This is a no brainer. I can try out the service and phone for an extended period and if I am unhappy, I can

1) sell the phone and move to another carrier

2) keep the phone and move to another carrier

3) sell the phone in 10 months when the iphone 6 comes out which will almost certainly be big screen and triband

4)keep the phone and get an iphone 5s with upgrade and sell it at a significant profit.

5) keep the phone and stay on Sprint

 

It's worth it to me to have that flexibility. I understand it isn't to everyone, but it is to me.
