Not interesting at all once you think about it. Radio settings are in the NVRAM. Just like your phone number is. Just like the NVRAM settings are not part of the baseband/modem flash. Any settings in NVRAM will always be updated by other "pieces" in the upgrade that people call firmware. Simply commands to update a value in NVRAM. Now, stop and think about the different hodge podge thrown together stuff that is one people's phones since they may have done the last two baseband upgrades of just the modem itself. So now they are missing the various NVRAM tweaks for the past two upgrades! DOH!!

 

Throw this into the mix along with the various upgrades going on to towers a there you have more to the mix of people saying the LTE is better now and some say it is worse. Fun fun! You should always upgrade everything, kernel, ROM, modem/baseband, PRI, etc if possible. You can skip the HBOOT and recovery, but never anything else otherwise you have no leg to stand on about something not working or signal is not good on your phone.

 

RRU'd back to latest ICS, then took the JB OTA update to make sure i got everything. That's how i always do it, even HBoot and recovery, then I just unlock again and reflash TWRP and flash my ROM of choice (or in this case go back to the same ROM i was already on).

Okay, so as to the other day with my horrible battery life, I had installed netflix... I didn't think much of it, since it never gave me problems with ICS. Apparently, when I uninstalled it, my battery life came back to being amazing. Unfortunately, though, it never showed up under the battery usage. But nonetheless, I'm getting amazing battery life again :)

That's the same thing I found when Google now was added to an EVO LTE rom months ago. I always removed it.

For what it is, google now is pretty awersome but definitely not worth the battery drain so I disabled it, if I need information about anything google search is right there anyway.

I feel like such an idiot for asking, but how do you get to the Google Now settings?

In the same vein, you guys know how the power saver feature works? I tried it one day (when I had Google Now on btw) and my phone died in 4-5 hours. I was so pissed off. Maybe it was just Google Now but regardless, I haven't turned on power saver since.

 

I also think Google Now is pretty spiffy. I turn it on now and then, esp when I know I will be having a reliable signal.

Just hold down the home button(or voice search app) to access google search then hit menu and you can disable or enable google now.

Thanks a lot, man! Wow, Google Now does look pretty cool. Not sure If I want to turn it off, since I haven't seen a decrease in battery life at all since the JB update. Battery life is still one thing that I am very impressed with on the EVO. Thx again.

Yea, I already had it on, but never messed with it since the update. I have been searching all of my Google apps to find the G Now settings again, which is why I feel like an idiot for asking. lol Checking all the features out now for the first time. :tu:

I particularly love Google Now. Doesn't seem to a major drain on my battery at all. Sometimes it's a little creepy. Like sometimes when I'm out and the GN will pop up and it'll be like "Hey you should go to that restaurant across the street."

Ok to be serious for a moment, I did a little testing with my GS3 vs. my EVO with LTE connections, as best I could. Obviously I couldn't run them against each other because I only have one line, but I ran them through the same tests to see what would happen.

 

I couldn't seem to get far enough away from home to lose LTE completely (which was a little surprising) so I found the next best thing. A dip in the road where I loose all Sprint signal every time, with every device. Before driving through the dip, I would make sure each phone was connected to LTE, and when it disconnected, I would see how long it would take to reconnect.

 

On average, it took the GS3 3-5 minutes to find LTE again. Keep in mind I had moved barely more than a block and was back into full LTE coverage.

 

It took the EVO on average 1-3 minutes to find LTE again.

 

So it is latching onto LTE just fine. I don't know how it performs on fringe areas, I couldn't find one without driving too long :o

This seems to be consistent with I'm hearing anecdotally. That the EVO LTE connectivity issues seem to be solved. That the EVO can now pick up a connection mch easier and faster than before, as well as keep it much easier. It does seem from what I've read that is not a stellar LTE RF performer, but definitely still more than sufficient. I can't wait to take the EVO out for a spin in an LTE area for my own testing.

And the RF performance aspect I believe is something that will always be a constant with it too... Remember AJ saying that after the FCC docs were posted up.... First time I realized devices varied this much RF wise, but it makes sense in the end...

Well if you say it's so, then I'm more inclined to believe it now. That's definitely good to hear. Hopefully you'll share with us your test results soon. :-)

So my launcher has been running really slow and choppy every now and then on my EVO lately. Mine has done it about 3 times in the past week or so and the only remedy is to reboot my phone. Maybe its an app that I have installed recently or just could it just be a bug in Sense? Has anybody seen anything like this on their device after updating to JB?

Personally, I haven't had any issues as far as random lag but I am rooted running custom roms so I don't know. I will add though that my girl got a stock evo running the latest ota and she haven't had any issues either.

      Totally agree.  In my county and surrounding counties, TM did not place n-41 on every site.  When I look at the sites in question, I probably would have not placed it there either.  I can find just a few with n-71 only and in most of those cases if you live there and know the probable usage of the residents, you would not do a full upgrade on those sites.  One site in particular is set up to force feed n-71 through a long tunnel on the Turnpike.  No stopping allowed in the tunnel. No stores, movie theaters, bathrooms, so n41 would be a waste.    n25 is not really needed either, so it is not there.  The tunnel is going through & under a mountain with more black bears than people.  TM was smart.  Get good coverage in the tunnel but do not waste many many thousands of dollars with extra unused spectrum. I also see sites with only n71 & n25.  Again this makes sense to me.  Depending on what county we are talking about, they moved much of their b25 from LTE to nr.  Some counties have more n25 than a neighboring county, but luckily, it is plenty everywhere.   When you are in a very rural area, n41 can run up the bills and then be barely used.  I am NOT finding sites that should have had n41 but TM failed to provide it.  They may have to come back later in a few years and upgrade the site to n41.  However, we just may eventually see the last little piece on Band 25 leave LTE and move to n25. I am not sure if the satellite to phone service is using band 25 G block as LTE or nr. We also can possibly have at least some AWS move from LTE to nr at some point.  Yes, everybody wants n41. it is not justified in some cases.  When I travel, I desire some decent service along the entire route but it does not have to be 1 or 2 gig download.   If I can get 50/5 on a speedtest with data that will flow and not stutter, I am very happy. Yes, they will swap out the USC gear.  TM needs to match their existing network. The USCC equipment did the job for years, but it is time to retire it.
