It's same method Google has been using for years for rolling out firmware upgrades.  Random and by percentage that ramps up.  Some app developers do this on the play store.  Read this for more:

If someone posts the actual OTA file or link it's pretty easy on any device (locked and non-rooted) to update it yourself.  I've never waited on an update due to this.

Thanks, that's pretty interesting.  I especially liked the part about not clearing the 'framework services".

I haven't looked around much, xda is kinda confusing on the Sprint section for G2 --if I'm not mistaken they don't have a Sprint section for it there...But last time I was there I didn't see where anyone had posted the zv8 update. Maybe they'll organize it a little better as dev for Sprint variant of G2 ramps up.

Here's the update:    http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23252070760973835

I had to use adb to sideload it.

Theres a flashable version on xda, whether by twrp or stock

And thanks i thought you could change the 1 - 3 band priority numbers, other than just enabling

They have a Sprint section for about two weeks now

Does it matter if you download + adb sideload the modem alone, or the entire update...anything beneficial in the update (since the modem is what, 25mb and the update is 110mb?)

I meant, subsections like other devices...I think everything is kinda thrown in the General section at this point from what I could see. The day the update was first announced here, I hit XDA several times and the newest threads had no mention of it at all.

I can't say if there is anything else in there worth getting but I know recovery and some other things are in there. Subscribe to that modem thread though, seems to be kept updated pretty well. I think the Dev section for us on XDA is going to be the most useful since the general is general for all (which sucks).  We have more pertinent information in here so at least you're in the right place. :)

Some said it helps with the crackling issue, and high chirping noises when playing spotify

I am rooted. But all stock...no Custom Roms or Boot loaders

I don't know for sure BUT it most likely has to do with your root situation, all stock or not. (*Is your Recovery stock also??)  I'd just say install one of the 2 options posted today and profit.  :tu:

I tried everything to get power+ vol down to boot me into recovery so I could sideload it...Just wouldn't go. I downloaded the modem alone and the full update, planned on doing the full update though. Just doesn't want to cooperate with me.

What part didn't what didn't work, booting into recovery or running the update?

I used the one I linked, since my phone is still stock and it was the update that came from Sprint. I'm not sure if all the files posted at XDA are flashable through the stock recovery.

This is what worked for me to install the update entirely from my handset:

I used the ZV8 update .zip file posted as a link a few pages back.  I first uninstalled the Xposed framework and G2 module then booted into TWRP and flashed the zip.  After update I was not rooted (binaries out of whack) but TWRP recovery was still installed and working so (as I use SuperSU) I simply downloaded the UPDATE-SuperSU.zip file from XDA and reflashed with TWRP.  Root completely restored.  Reinstalled Xposed Framework and enabled G2 Module and all was updated perfectly and running as normal.  My G2 is stock rooted with TWRP recovery.  I did a few other mods but not many.

As posted a number of times on XDA do the update and do not install the full updated stock ROM over top of your rooted stock ZV7 as it has boot looped many devices.  Always make sure you NAND Backup prior to installing any significant update.

When I first booted after the update Trickster MOD notified me that I was running a new or updated Kernal so I am thinking something had to be changed in the kernal even if knew version numbers are not being shown.
