T-Mobile LTE & Network Discussion V2

So I took a business trip from Houston to Baton Rouge in I-10 and T-Mobile was not up to the task. My Verizon iPhone with Unlimited data was working without any issue 99.9% of the time while T-Mobile dropped down to EDGE several times. Even in Baton Rouge, LTE data on T-Mobile was extremly slow and not working at times. Ran several speedtests and T-Mobile was at or around 1MB down. Sprint was working well, not as well as Verizon but close and even into Denham Springs, you were able to see what a difference Sprint made in a year. B26 all over the place and areas that had 3G last year are now running B25/26 & B41.

I'm really curious where you had issues along I-10, at least from the LA state line to Baton Rouge.

It gets really thin near Jennings, and the site on the Basin Bridge near Grosse Tete is still GSM only, but I do not drop LTE between TX/LA line and Jennings, and from the drop in Jennings to Grosse Tete.

Also curious where you were seeing issues with TMo in BR/Denham, because even though its only 10x10 L2100, they've got tons of 5x5 L1900 on air, especially along I-10,I-12,I-110, and quite a few sites along/near Airline and Florida. No L700 on air yet however.

My only trouble issues in BR are near I-10/Seigen and downtown BR north of Florida, LSU's campus (and Tigerland). Just curious of the discrepancy in our two experiences. Not saying its perfect, far from it, but we've had two very different experiences.

I had Edge before crossing the river into Baton Rouge from the west but between the Texas border to Baton Rouge, there is a lot of area that is very badly covered. I had some massive problems around the Hollywood Casino in BR.

Denham Springs was pretty bad as soon you drove into sub-devisions and I got always NO SERVICE, no fall back roaming.

Now I'm also curious what device this was, because my daily driver an iPhone 6, even without B12, still has almost steady LTE service except in my stated problem areas. And while T-Mobile isn't blanketing Denham top to bottom, T-Mobile is colocated with Sprint on 2 sites, and T-Mobile has a third site in Denham proper, and so most anywhere LTE coverage should tilt in favor of T-Mobile, though Sprint will edge out T-Mobile with 1x, especially 1x800 outside of LTE.

Here's all the CellMapper data from myself and others. Personally I've used Samsung Galaxy Avant and Moto E to map to CellMapper, just to add a level of transparency for what devices I personally used to map in these areas. It pretty well matches my experience.

Why wouldn't they be available for class A post paid? That doesn't even make sense.

I call T-Mobile customer service they said it's not available yet and not even prepaid it's only available 4 customers with good credit

That does not make sense - class A is the group with the best credit.

T-Mobile announces 4x4 MIMO, 256 QAM. Says the S7 and S7 Edge can use both after a software update.

Throwing some shade at Sprint:

While carriers like to announce everysingledevice. they test in the lab on new technologies, the Un-carrier acts. We put new technology to work for our customers in the field, not in press releases.

We'll see who has the last laugh though.

This is great to see. Should really help them out in some of their congested markets like Chicago. So the S7, S7 Edge, and I assume Note 7 will go from 150 to 400 Mbps on 20x20 band 4 LTE. It's also nice to see that all their LTE cell sites will support 256 QAM by end of October.

It'll bring more benefit once the majority of devices can utilize it. The S7 and S7 edge probably don't make up the majority on the network, so initial benefits will be limited.

That was some shade TUH. I'm sure Sprint will come back with their famous line, "We have more spectrum than any wireless carrier"

Honestly opinion, I don't think we will see Sprint fully blossom until we get closer to 5G.

This will still help boost speeds for all devices right. Since phones that can utilize it will be getting there tasks done more efficiently and they won't be using network resources for as long.

Seems they have been having the last laugh for a while now. Sprint was talking the 4x4 Or 8x8 MIMO 256 QAM  in 2014 at the Chicago demonstration.

I asked here if this was possible and I was told no. So Now Tmobile is launching 4x4 MIMO and it seems to be a reality.

Whoever told you it wasn't possible was misinformed.

What people have been saying around here was there were no devices that supported it, regardless of whether the network was capable of it.

And upgrade all remaining 3G sites to LTE

    • Excuse my rookie comments here, but after enabling *#73#, it seems that the rainbow sim V2? requires n70 (I turned it off along with n71 - was hoping to track n66) to be available else it switches to T-Mobile.  So this confirms my suspicion that you need to be close to a site to get on Dish.  Have no idea why they don't just use plmn. To test, I put it into a s21 ultra, rebooted twice, came up on T-Mobile (no n70 on s21).  Tried to manually register on 313340, but it did not connect (tried twice). I am on factory unlocked firmware but used a s22 hack to get *#73# working.  Tried what you were suggesting with a T-Mobile sim partially installed, but that was very unstable with Dish ( I think they had figured that one out).  [edit: and now I see Boost sent me a successful device swap notice which says I can now begin to use my new device.  Sigh.  Will try again later and wait for this message - too impatient.]
    • Hopefully this indicates T-Mobile hasn't completely abandoned mmwave and/or small cells? But then again this is the loop, so take that as you will. Hopefully now that most macro activity is done (besides rural colo/builds), they will start working on small cells.
    • This has been approved.. https://www.cnet.com/tech/mobile/fcc-approves-t-mobiles-deal-to-purchase-mint-mobile/
    • In the conference call they had two question on additional spectrum. One was the 800 spectrum. They are not certain what will happen, thus have not really put it into their plans either way (sale or no sale). They do have a reserve level. Nationwide 800Mhz is seen as great for new technologies which I presume is IOT or 5g slices.  T-Mobile did not bite on use of their c-band or DOD.  mmWave rapidly approaching deadlines not mentioned at all. FWA brushes on this as it deals with underutilized spectrum on a sector by sector basis.  They are willing to take more money to allow FWA to be mobile (think RV or camping). Unsure if this represents a higher priority, for example, FWA Mobile in RVs in Walmart parking lots working where mobile phones need all the capacity. In terms of FWA capacity, their offload strategy is fiber through joint ventures where T-Mobile does the marketing, sales, and customer support while the fiber company does the network planning and installation.  50%-50% financial split not being consolidated into their books. I think discussion of other spectrum would have diluted the fiber joint venture discussion. They do have a fund which one use is to purchase new spectrum. Sale of the 800Mhz would go into this. It should be noted that they continue to buy 2.5Ghz spectrum from schools etc to replace leases. They will have a conference this fall  to update their overall strategies. Other notes from the call are 75% of the phones on the network are 5g. About 85% of their sites have n41, n25, and n71, 90% 5g.  93% of traffic is on midband.  SA is also adding to their performance advantage, which they figure is still ahead of other carriers by two years. It took two weeks to put the auction 108 spectrum to use at their existing sites. Mention was also made that their site spacing was designed for midrange thus no gaps in n41 coverage, while competitors was designed for lowband thus toggles back and forth for n77 also with its shorter range.
    • The manual network selection sounds like it isn't always scanning NR, hence Dish not showing up. Your easiest way to force Dish is going to be forcing the phone into NR-only mode (*#*#4636#*#* menu?), since rainbow sims don't support SA on T-Mobile.
