Newb question. Do you have to be rooted to load the .15 radio?

No.

You must be UNLOCKED though.

So I wonder why no Nexus 5 on Verizon? Did Google pass or did Verizon? I wonder what the reasons were.

Google and VZW don't like each other. Verizon delayed the Android 4.1.2 (I think that's the number, but it doesn't matter) update for the Verizon Galaxy Nexus by some 6 months or so because they insisted on "approving" the update even though the Nexus devices are supposed to get android updates within weeks of release. Plus Google likes the idea of swappable SIMs (Sorry AJ ;)) and unlockable devices, which Verizon only does because the FCC forces them to since they bought 700Mhz (which had unlocking rules put in place by Google during the auction). Really, I'm quite surprised Sprint got the Nexus 5 and Verizon (sort of) has the Nexus 7 LTE. Now that I think about it, Google was probably afraid of something like the N7 LTE situation happening but with a phone rather than a tablet. Of course, they decided to count Verizon out of the N5 long before the N7 LTE fiasco, but it serves as a model for what could have happened if they had supported the N5. To answer your question, Google probably didn't bother asking Verizon if they would allow the N5 on their network.

Quick question i was looking at 32gb version on ebay.  Why does it say does not work on sprint/verizon networks?  Even though says new unlocked in box?

From what I have read any Nexus 5 bought from T-Mobile cannot be used on the Sprint Network.  Verizon does not allow any Nexus 5 on their network period.  Nexus 5's bought at AT&T, the Play Store or Sprint of course can be used on the Sprint Network.

Just inform Sprint to leave the last digit off of your Imei when they go to activate the Sim card for you.

you got the phone from tmo? Or want to activate on tmo?

That's the fix to activate with Sprint if the phone wasn't purchased from Sprint. You can also contact Google directly. Takes like 3-5 mins and they will be glad to help.

Sprint techs don't know what they're talking about a good portion of the time just politely point them in the right direction. All Nexus 5 are the same.

Refer to my screen shot of my email from Google in regards to Sprint.

It was discussed at length earlier in this thread that Nexus 5's purchased from T-Mobile cannot be activated on Sprint at this time. Yes, the hardware is capable, but for whatever reason, the IMEI/MEIDs are not in Sprint's database. Read back a couple of pages.

Just wondering if that fixed the issue where tmo sourced phones had issues on Sprint. Mine is from the play store. I knew of the issue but thought it would be fixed by now.

Perhaps it is a Tmo purchase, which like I just mentioned, will not work on Sprint. And no N5 will activate on Verizon. In any case, protects the seller if someone complains. But I'm not sure what would make someone want to buy that one for $65 more than Google charges for a guaranteed brand new, not stolen, fully Sprint-able one anyway..

No.. that's not a "fix", that's just a matter of giving Sprint the MEID instead of the IMEI.

I don't necessarily think the ability to activate Tmo-purchased N5's is a "bug" as much as it is intentional. If it was supposed to be possible, they would have resolved it 2 months ago.

I can't connect to band 41 for the life of me. I'm on .15 radio and next to an accepted clear lte tower with band 41 enabled. Priority is set to 0-0-1 with band 41 on 1. Chicago market. Thoughts?

Did you try and profile update followed by a prl update? A few threads ago a few people mentioned that working for them.

hmmm. Still nothing. Thanks for the help.

Well I think its been said before (and I'm assuming), that its hit and miss on connection to band 41 sites due to the n5 not officially being "spark capable" yet. Seems like your only options are to try a few times or forget it and wait for the update hopefully coming out soonish.

Sure hope it's not like the 1x and voice 800 fix for the Note 2 that never happened. Sent from my SPH-L900

I'm pretty sure once we get the spark updated (Walmart icon included), everything will be kosher.

We won't get the icon because google manages updates. Sprint can't make any modifications to the software and you can bet google won't add that icon to android.
