Shentel / Sprint LTE - (was ntelos - West & N&W Virginia)

This is good news. Now it's all about when are they going to open up Sprint LTE customers on their existing network. Sprint Band 25 devices will work on all nTelos Band 2 LTE sites. Band 25 is all PCS including G block. Band 2 is all PCS, except G block. So every Band 25 device can run on any PCS spectrum (minus H block, which is not out there yet).

That is terrific news! Thanks for setting me straight on that!

Start keeping your eyes on sensorlys sprint 4g coverage in areas like Beckley and waynesboro to see if anything starts popping up.

I'll be in Charlottesville, not sure if they are deployed there yet but I know there was talk of it. Then again, Waynesboro is just (a very scenic) drive over the Blue Ridge, heck if I end up hiking this weekend in the south half of the south section of Shenandoah Nat'l Park on the west side of the ridge I can see what sort of nTelos goodness is being blasted!

So nTelos has extended the agreement to include LTE service. We are just waiting for nTelos to open the doors for us right?

That's the way I'm reading it.

In accordance with the terms of the Agreement, the NTELOS Entities are required to upgrade their network in the Market to 4G long term evolution technology

(“LTE”), with such upgrade to be substantially complete by May 2017. Failure by the NTELOS Entities to build out the LTE network in the Market in a timely fashion would constitute an event of default and give Sprint the right to terminate the Agreement. Sprint may construct its own cell sites or take such other action to provide geographic coverage in a portion of the Marketserved by the NTELOS Entities in which their network does not offer coverage and Sprint has requested that the NTELOS Entities provide coverage and the NTELOS Entities decline

You all should be loving this part. It means that Sprint has been threatening ntelos with over building them for a while. If they don't finish rolling out to sprints expectations then you can all expect Shentel to come rolling in. That should be a huge motivator to ntelos to deploy quickly and efficiently.

My key takeaway items from the conference call is that money spent by Ntelos on LTE is to grow from $45 million to $70 in 2014 with more after that, likely better phones, and Ntelos really wants the 800 LTE.

Yeah, but I have a feeling "quickly and efficiently" as laid out in that contract means by May 2017...

This is good news to me since I live in nTelos Territory (Ch'ville). Hoping it will be sooner than later.

Sprint Corporation (“Sprint,” NYSE: S) and NTELOS Holdings Corp. (NASDAQ: NTLS) today announced that Sprint and NTELOS Inc. (“nTelos”) reached an amended agreement to extend their Strategic Network Alliance (“SNA”) through 2022. Under the agreement, nTelos will continue to serve as the exclusive network provider for Sprint in the SNA territory, which covers approximately 2.1 million people in West Virginia and the western part of Virginia. In addition, Sprint customers will gain access to nTelos’s recently launched 4G LTE network and nTelos will have access to Sprint’s 800 MHz, 1.9 GHz and 2.5 GHz spectrum throughout the territory. nTelos plans to maximize the network experience for both its retail and wholesale customers by committing to expand and build its 4G LTE network in the SNA territory to specifications aligned with Sprint’s network modernization program.

Pulled that off of the Sprint website, described it much easier. They've launched LTE in Beckley.... So now all they need is to allow us to connect!

They also have it in Waynesboro Va as well.

I wonder if during any of these negotiations this thread was ever checked out. If you google "sprint ntelos lte", this thread (and site) is definitely a big chunk of the search results.

I wonder if they also plan to rollout 1x 800; it certainly would help their voice coverage given the challenging terrain.

I would assume if they are going to do band 26 they will also do a 1x 800 carrier. I guess we will find out...

This is good enough news to keep me in the fold. Now I just need to make sure my next phone will actually work with the 4G LTE that I get here.

So long as nTelos is deploying LTE in the PCS band, any Sprint LTE device will work once they are given access.

nTelos is probably going to drag their feet letting Sprint users on their LTE network. :-(

I live in Danville. While it's populated, I would guess we're a 4Q2014 market for them at earliest. It stinks for those of you in launch markets, but I imagine you'll have access before I do.

They may try, but if they drag their feet too much that'll be in violation of the contract, at which point Sprint could toss them to the curb.

Im in the Ch'ville/Greene County area I'm guessing we might be in the same boat as you in 4Q2014.

    • A heavy n41 overlay as an acquisition condition would be a win for customers, and eventually a win for T-Mobile as that might be enough to preclude VZW/AT&T adding C-Band for FWA due to spreading the market too thinly (which means T-Mobile would just have local WISPs/wireline ISPs as competition). USCC spacing (which is likely for contiguous 700 MHz LTE coverage in rural areas) isn't going to be enough for contiguous n41 anyway, and I doubt they'll densify enough to get there.
    • Boost Infinite with a rainbow SIM (you can get it SIM-only) is the cheapest way, at $25/mo, to my knowledge; the cheaper Boost Mobile plans don't run on Dish native. Check Phonescoop for n70 support on a given phone; the Moto G 5G from last year may be the cheapest unlocked phone with n70 though data speeds aren't as good as something with an X70 or better modem.
    • Continuing the USCC discussion, if T-Mobile does a full equipment swap at all of USCC's sites, which they probably will for vendor consistency, and if they include 2.5 on all of those sites, which they probably will as they definitely have economies of scale on the base stations, that'll represent a massive capacity increase in those areas over what USCC had, and maybe a coverage increase since n71 will get deployed everywhere and B71 will get deployed any time T-Mobile has at least 25x25, and maybe where they have 20x20. Assuming this deal goes through (I'm betting it does), I figure I'll see contiguous coverage in the area of southern IL where I was attempting to roam on USCC the last time I was there, though it might be late next year before that switchover happens.
    • Forgot to post this, but a few weeks ago I got to visit these small cells myself! They're spread around Grant park and the surrounding areas, but unfortunately none of the mmwave cells made it outside of the parks along the lake into the rest of downtown. I did spot some n41 small cells around downtown, but they seemed to be older deployments limited to 100mhz and performed poorly.
    • What is the cheapest way to try Dish's wireless network?  Over the past year I've seen them add their equipment to just about every cell site here, I'm assuming just go through Boost's website?  What phones are Dish native?
