Network Vision/LTE - San Diego Market

So earlier this evening, I decided to walk over to this site to go see if anything new was installed. It's a very old light pole site. There's a LTE live tower about half a mile to a mile away, but I'm on the fringe, and can only get 3G. As for this light pole site, I took some pics. Can anyone please tell me what I'm looking at here antenna wise? If it were to be upgraded to B25, what would be done on a site like this?

Looks like a type of "stealth" site. I'm assuming that is has been 3G accepted, because I see the NV GPS cone up there, which would mean it is a GMO. GMOs can run LTE through the legacy antennas, but Sprint prefers to not do that if at all possible. If this site were to get a full NV treatment, you would see the antennas swapped out for the larger NV antennas (6 RF ports at the base), but the RRUs would likely be hidden away, what we call a GMR site.

Thanks for the helpful info! I've been trying to figure this one out for a long time. We have a handful of "stealth sites" like this in North San Diego County. Since the 3G acceptance, I've noticed very fast 3G speeds, especially inside my place. I've been getting anywhere from -77 dBm to -86 dBm being on 3G last couple of weeks. And for the first time this morning when i walked out the door around 6am for work, I noticed an immediate handoff to LTE and had a signal of -112 dBm. Still can't get any LTE inside the house. Never could.

With that 3G signal quality, once your home site goes live you should see your LTE at around -90 to -105 RSRP.  -112 RSRP is definitely from a different site.  Keep eyes on your GCI on SignalCheck when connected at -112, verify if its the same GCI with RSRP at -50 to -75 at the base of site.  If it ain't -50 to -75 RSRP, it is not coming from that site.

Just spent a week in beautiful San Diego for a few days of work/ mostly vacation. Good 4G at La Jolla shores beach. Overall, I didn't really spend much time on the phone but when I needed it there was a mix of usable 3G and LTE. I had no problems with navigation and loading yelp's webpages

I did get lost in Cleveland National Forest and couldn't get maps to load on my phone...roaming on Verizon 1x. Had my handy paper map though.

Rigoberto's carne asada fries with hot sauce was groin grabbingly delicious.

Early this morning I noticed having LTE signal at -111 dBm a little after 8am in car about 3 blocks away from my place and that site. Since getting great 3G service, I've noticed a different BSL location 3 days ago (Coronado Dr) when bouncing around. Vineyard St was always the main BSL. So I decided to do a PRL update at exactly 9pm inside the house. At 9:04 pm, I stepped out the front door. At 9:06 pm, picked up LTE -115 dBm walking another 4 or 5 feet from front door. Other than that, majority of the night after 8pm the last 2 nights, my 3G signals is at a very stable -78 dBm to -83 dBm on average stuck on the Coronado Dr BSL.

Sprint has gotten a lot better here. Before, I wouldn't be able to stream Pandora at all while driving. I would spend way more time on Wi-Fi than 3G because the latter was pretty much unusable.

Today? I was able to stream Pandora pretty much all the way from Ramona to Claremont Mesa Blvd. with no hiccups.  :tu: Now to finish upgrades in Clairemont (especially in the Balboa/Genesee area since it's still bad enough there to have to switch to Wi-Fi for data).

That site been on going for almost 3 years. It is pending city council approvals which the build may start hopefully summer.

I've been getting a lot of bouncing around from having data to just 1x since Friday evening here at home, when not on Wifi. Screenshots are from this afternoon.

Drive by, someone might be replacing the antennas. If not open a trouble ticket.

An open ticket number was given. Drove by earlier this evening, and didn't see anything. Decided to drive over to another site that was also 3G accepted the same time as this tower I'm connected to. It's on a powerline. When I got there, I was picking up LTE sitting in my car pretty much parked underneath it while taking a speed test. Here's what I got. Can anyone explain this type of site setup?

Looks like the GMO sites that we have around L.A. Metro.

There's usually an underground equipment vault nearby marked "SPRINT."

Was in Carlsbad on Poinsettia, and had 1x for 2-3 miles. Just walked out of Walmart in Oceanside that's on the 76, and don't know what the heck is going on. No service period in the area. I live about 4 miles away. There is a site a few stores down from Walmart that has a permit for B41. When service comes on, which is no longer than 1 minute, I was seeing -82 dBm LTE, then service goes out, and see -58 dBm 3G.

Reporting that Encinitas has a live B41 site. Was sitting at traffic light at the intersection of Sante Fe Dr/El Camino Real when I noticed!

I need to hunt the one down in Encinitas. I know there are a couple sites very close to one another in that area I spotted.

I went back to the site in Encinitas this afternoon that has B41, and did another speed test. I located the site which is located in a church tower. Couldn't really see equipment looking up. In the parking lot of the church, TMO and ATT share the same site, which has their own antennas on light posts, along with their labeled cabinets.

Speed test comaprison between last Friday and today below being a few hundred feet away from the site.

It was quite ironic that my slow AT&T connection struggled to open up your images.

  • 2 weeks later...

I'm still waiting on more to pop up in North County. Been driving by those areas a lot lately, and nothing as of yet.

Reporting, and confirming Spark is live in San Marcos. Was coming from Escondido stuck horrible traffic. Was checking out the GPS looking for shortcuts, and noticed B41 while I was on the 78 freeway passing by Barham Dr/S. Twin Oaks Valley Rd. Hurried up an got a quick screenshot of SignalCheck for verification.

That's not all. Got off at San Marcos Blvd via 78 heading West to Carlsbad. Noticed B41 again sitting at traffic light on the opposite side of San Marcos High. Drove up and got a screenshot and speedtest on W. San Marcos Blvd/S. Rancho Santa Fe Rd. Continued to hold B41 signal heading West to Carlsbad for about another mile or so passing through the San Marcos/Carlsbad border. Signal was holding up to -102 dBm until it switched over to B25.

    • This site is built but not live. eNB 41150 is still live. eNB 41188 is decommissioned but as far as I can tell the site at 200 West 55th is not built yet. This site is live gNB 1346302. This site is live gNB 1092074 This site is live gNB 1371671 This site is live gNB 1371860 — — — — — Sprint eNB 6156 -> T-Mobile gNB 1349260 Sprint eNB Unknown -> T-Mobile gNB 1325016 — — — — — Bonus T-Mobile 5G small cell, gNB 1348688 in Queens:
    • FTTH JVs are city by city as well, so it's not going to really be sector by sector. It sounds like TMo wants to be able to sell everyone home broadband, but if that requires building additional infrastructure that infra will take the form of FTTH builds rather than mobile densification. Which involves tradeoffs, but the product is better than e.g. what AT&T is doing for me right now, which is offering only Internet Air in an area where they have 100/20 DSL available but not (yet) fiber.
    • Hopefully they do not wait until these sectors get so overloaded that they start getting nasty reviews and people abandon them. Getting fiber coverage to the area of a overloaded sector can take a year or more. I also question if this can all be managed.  Lots of sectors all over the country can get congested fairly quick.  Lots of work and money to get fiber installed and there goes the profitability on the venture.
    • MoffetNathanson Conference This is a conference where the CFO talks telecom financial analysts so obviously it takes a return on investment approach.  Broadly T-Mobile divides there world into top 100 markets (60%) and small town/rural (40%). They ultimately want to have at least 1/3 market share in rural. They also look at demographics like 50+ and Hispanic.  Reputation is now starting to help them with CIOs.  Did mention c-band buildout beginning in major cities as well as continued band migration to 5g. IMO they may become more aggressive at offering 5g phones to LTE holdover and 5g users without VoNR at a future date. mmWave not discussed. Price increases not discussed iirc. Did mention spectrum purchases from speculators. $9 billion all goes through same ROI process. FWA is down to hexagonal patterns by sector of fallow spectrum. Fiber JVs will go where sectors are overloaded.
