Sprint 4G Rollout Updates

Earlier today, HTC and Sprint announced the highly anticipated next generation EVO, dubbed as the EVO 4G LTE. Kinda of a long name huh? Well it's not about the name, it's about the device itself. The EVO 4G LTE has a HUGE 4.7" 720p screen with a Super LCD2 display.

 

Powering this device is ICS covered with SENSE 4.0 with Qualcomm's S4 chip. This device is basically Sprint's version of the ONE X, so it has an impressive 8MP camera that can record up-to 1080p video. Along with those fancy specs, this device will run on Sprint's soon to debut 4G LTE network.

 

Other specs include a NFC chip, Micro SD Card slot, Beats audio, red kickstand and a 2000mAh battery. This device will also be the first device to feature HD VOICE (I will go into detail in another article). When most devices are announced, release dates and prices are left out. Well, Sprint was so kind/sarcasm to tell us when we can pre-order this monster and how much this will cost us. Preorder for the EVO 4G LTE will begin on May 7th and it'll only cost you $199.99! Pretty reasonable, eh?

No user replaceable battery puts this in the iPhone class of devices. I like being able to have spare batteries on hand. However, 2000 maH is a plus.

This would be a great topic for an S4GRU article. Especially to clear up that this is 1X-A and not VoLTE. Also maybe something speculating how this could tie in to VoLTE in the future, although I think i've seen VoLTE articles or discussion here before.

Any word on SVDO support on all Sprint 2012 handsets? That would be a nice feature to have so that way ATT cannot make fun of Verizon and Sprint for not being able to talk and surf on 3G with CDMA.

I'm just very impressed with the little easter eggs within this announcement. SD card slot? Bigger battery? A kickstand? Sprint is really showcasing its unique partnership with HTC with this one. Sure the lack of removable battery is a disappointment, but after the HTC One X announcement we all saw the writing on the wall. I still have the OG battery in my OG Evo 4G anyway. I wonder how much the S4 integration of lte will help battery life - if any.

Is the different colored material around the camera serve a purpose? I am thinking along the lines of better signal reception b/c it is easier to transmit through (think LG and why they use the material they do). Can anyone confirm that or is it strictly cosmetic? I have been unsuccessful in figuring this out. I figured Mr.Hesse would have mentioned it yesterday.

 

Disappointments: I was really hoping they would have thrown in wireless charging for the new EVO LTE especially if the battery is not removeable. I know the camera is not at all about the MP's but I was hoping for 12. Let's face it we had 8 MP's 2 years ago and it should have had a better sensor/image chip then. I think a MP bump would have gone a long way with the ignorant consumers walking into the store not knowing what they want. I would think the SGIII will be in the double digits.

 

All this being said I plan on using my upgrade for the EVO LTE.

Yep the top portion where the camera is is plastic. This is where the NFC chip and antenna are. The rest of the phone is metal.

The LG Viper does do SVDO. None of the other handsets do. The Viper will join HTC's Thunderbolt and Rezound as the only SVDO handsets in North America. Implementing SVDO requires 2 CDMA baseband processors. It appears the EVO will rely on the single CDMA baseband built into its S4 SoC processor so no SVDO, but SVLTE should be supported.

So it was intentional?

Of course it was intentional. Unless we want to go back to pull out antennas there has to be a plastic portion of the phone for wireless signals to get through.

 

I am very impressed with the specs, but I'm having a hard time with the looks. I'll probably still get it though.

The bottom is aluminum, which is bad for reception, and apparently NFC can't work through aluminum at all. Top half is polycarbonate for the NFC and other radios I'm sure.

I hear you on the looks of this phone. If I decide to get it I will definitely be getting a protective case - not so much as to protect it but to cover it up.

Yes, it appears that the CDMA1X/EV-DO and LTE modems in the Qualcomm MSM8960 chipset can operate separately and simultaneously. So, that should enable SVLTE. We had initially assumed that HTC would throw in another Qualcomm MDM, a la the Rezound and the LG Viper. But that second modem would not really add anything beyond SVDO.

 

Furthermore, because the EVO 4G LTE will rely on only one chipset (and a 28 nm process chip, at that!), it should have excellent uptime on its 2000 mAh battery. The dual chipset configurations for LTE handsets (and WiMAX handsets, too) have been a real drain on batteries, so the single chipset, 28 nm die, and extended battery in the EVO 4G LTE should be multiple steps in the right direction.

Are there any other lte phones on the market that use a single chipset? Or is HTC really breaking new ground with this? In my house we have a slogan, "4G no batt-ery." Like you already said, hopefully a single chipset helps that reputation.

My main concern is the phone's shape. I loved the wideness of the OG EVO 4G but when they went to the EVO 3D, they reduced the width of the phone. I hope the EVO 4G LTE brings back the wider base. But I'm afraid looking at the pictures that this might also have the smaller width.
