It is a calculated move and will pay off with some, falter with others.

 

"Extended Range LTE" or not -- as many handsets do not support band 12, not to mention, many T-Mobile markets do not and probably never will have band 12 -- T-Mobile is counting on some VZW users being tempted. They may try T-Mobile and find it works as well for them as VZW, much to their surprise. Some will have later regret once they start to enter different buildings and travel outside of cities, but they may be beyond their trial periods, already effectively locked in to T-Mobile device payments. Finally, others will find the T-Mobile network still weak straight away and jump right back to VZW.

 

The first group may become T-Mobile subs for life. It is the second and third groups that could prove problematic. The second group may be stuck with T-Mobile for a while, but once the financial opportunity to leave arises, they may bolt forever. And the third group most likely will not try T-Mobile again. So, T-Mobile hopes at least for short term gain from the second group, and by improving its network in the interim, T-Mobile may be able to retain many of those former VZW subs.

 

We shall see...

Yeah that was my biggest issue - lack consistency.

 

With Sprint service typically was adequate everywhere I traveled. Not great but...

 

Where as TMO was amazing then totally crap so the savings and faster speeds meant less to me.

Hopefully T-Mobile's ad mostly fails. I say this not because I hate T-Mobile, even though I pretty much do (somewhat depends on what their next step is with my phone issue, as my mother has found one person in their Executive Relations department who seems a bit helpful).

 

Although putting that aside and just watching the ad for what it is, along with watching the Verizon ad which the T-Mobile ad mocks, there is nothing in the T-Mobile ad which addresses the Verizon network nor making any comparative claims between the two networks.

 

Other than T-Mobile's typical annoying flashy colors and images of their odd-looking fanboy/fangirl models who appear to be really high on some sort of acid trip drug state (perhaps from partying and getting kicked out of parties with John Legere), the ad's only content is showing some geese while someone with a bad English accent mocks Verizon, and a quick showing of their end of year coverage map while stating their extended range LTE is reaching further and inside better.

 

People with Verizon, etc. at least most of them, won't fall for this cheap ad by T-Mobile. They'll likely at least do some research before making any decisions, which it'll be that research, not the ad that will persuade people one way or another. Doubtful though that this ad is good enough even to get people to do the research.

Massive improvement from Sprint and Tmobile, ATT really is in for a rough ride!

 

Uh, well it will be interesting to see how AT&T does, along with the others this quarter. But I think they will bounce around in many cities for the next year to year and a half. It's kinda in the hands of how WCS gets deployed. However for suburban, exurban and semirural areas, things are quite the opposite and are doing great. 

 

Regarding T-Mobile, it seems at this pace AT&T will end up having more mid-band than T-Mobile has coverage in certain suburban and rural areas, so for cities that's one thing for sure, but as a whole, not really. B12 areas are the only exception, and like B12 phones, they're quite numbered.

 

I don't have much hope for T-Mobile outside of their city frenzy. I'm more worried that Sprint keeps the balance and doesn't forget the suburban areas after they improve in the cities. I'm sure they'll do fine.

If you fall flat in big cities, eventually the word spreads and even the smaller towns get the word of the bad city performance. 

 

Essentially Tmobile's story, its great in the cities and the total opposite in smaller towns. But that has not stopped their momentum.

 

Whereas Sprint allocated their resources more evenly during NV, so instead of 10 good city markets, Sprint ended up upgrading 100 not-so-good mix markets.

 

Fair to say Tmobile's approach yielded the best short term gain.

Yeah, I am not sure what is the problem for AT&T in the Rocky Mountain Front Range megalopolis.  The market share data that we have from a few years ago puts AT&T well ahead of both T-Mobile and Sprint but well behind VZW.  So, you would not expect the issue to be oversubscribed congestion.  Regardless, Robert certainly has corroborated the RootMetrics objective testing -- AT&T is in the crapper in Denver.

Probably hashing out some new deal. Hopefully its the Samsung for life one thats been rumoured about. Speaking of which, if Samsung does go through with a "for life" plan, I wonder how long before the other manufacturers do it also.

John Legere is one of the worst CEOs I've ever heard of. I'd have more to say about what a disaster I think he is, but I'm getting tired.

I like the idea quite a bit, except for that it means John Legere will keep his job, rather than Marcelo taking over T-Mobile. If Marcelo had the position of both companies, T-Mobile would be alot better.

Their metric is percentage of time on LTE. Not the same as coverage. It counts the time that a user is on LTE in the field, not the coverage overall that a provider has in the field.

 

Sprint is at 64% where USCC is at 73% because USCC users are staying on LTE more consistently.

 We just got info saying you can't be on a lease to qualify for the $1 plan. You can be on an IB and pay that off and then switch to this plan but essentially you have to own your device to switch to this. This is what I'm being told as of right now. I'm sure adjustments and what not will be made as we go along.
Also. You can't adjust a lease due to you signing paperwork for certain pricing and dates. It's not as simple as just moving it over. For legal purposes it has to be a new lease with new paperwork to go with it.

    • In the conference call they had two question on additional spectrum. One was the 800 spectrum. They are not certain what will happen, thus have not really put it into their plans either way (sale or no sale). They do have a reserve level. Nationwide 800Mhz is seen as great for new technologies which I presume is IOT or 5g slices.  T-Mobile did not bite on use of their c-band or DOD.  mmWave rapidly approaching deadlines not mentioned at all. FWA brushes on this as it deals with underutilized spectrum on a sector by sector basis.  They are willing to take more money to allow FWA to be mobile (think RV or camping). Unsure if this represents a higher priority, for example, FWA Mobile in RVs in Walmart parking lots working where mobile phones need all the capacity. In terms of FWA capacity, their offload strategy is fiber through joint ventures where T-Mobile does the marketing, sales, and customer support while the fiber company does the network planning and installation.  50%-50% financial split not being consolidated into their books. I think discussion of other spectrum would have diluted the fiber joint venture discussion. They do have a fund which one use is to purchase new spectrum. Sale of the 800Mhz would go into this. It should be noted that they continue to buy 2.5Ghz spectrum from schools etc to replace leases. They will have a conference this fall  to update their overall strategies. Other notes from the call are 75% of the phones on the network are 5g. About 85% of their sites have n41, n25, and n71, 90% 5g.  93% of traffic is on midband.  SA is also adding to their performance advantage, which they figure is still ahead of other carriers by two years. It took two weeks to put the auction 108 spectrum to use at their existing sites. Mention was also made that their site spacing was designed for midrange thus no gaps in n41 coverage, while competitors was designed for lowband thus toggles back and forth for n77 also with its shorter range.  
    • The manual network selection sounds like it isn't always scanning NR, hence Dish not showing up. Your easiest way to force Dish is going to be forcing the phone into NR-only mode (*#*#4636#*#* menu?), since rainbow sims don't support SA on T-Mobile.
    • "The company’s unique multi-layer approach to 5G, with dedicated standalone 5G deployed nationwide across 600MHz, 1.9GHz, and 2.5GHz delivers customers a consistently strong experience, with 85% of 5G traffic on sites with all three spectrum bands deployed." Meanwhile they are very close to a construction deadline June 1 for 850Mhz of mmWave in most of Ohio covering 27500-28350Mhz expiring 6/8/2028.
