Ah, the Touch Pro. Had that phone...keyboard was nice. Ability to run Android was nice. 640x480 screen was nice. Radio was nice, as was tethering. Yeah...that's about all that was nice :P

The Photon Q sounds like a cool phone...particularly the keyboard bit. But that non-user-replacable battery...

Picked up my Photon Q on Sunday. I am very impressed with the quality and connectivity with this phone! Not only do you get EVDO Roaming by default, but suddenly Sprint's 3G seems better than Verizon in most places now! I don't know how this is possible, but in places where I've gotten 0.05 to 0.15 MPBS download rates, I suddenly am getting 1.5 MBPS or higher. Upload speeds are in the low 1's as well, which just blows my mind. Mind you, this is in South Carolina, where the Sprint network has really been lacking lately. Couldn't be Network Vision, because my old Photon wasn't getting these speeds on the very same day.

Anybody have any ideas, or other Photon Q users out there experiencing the same? Please share! :)

My PQ is providing better numbers than my previous "world" phone (Motorola XPRT). This was obvious immediately after moving to the new device as the first thing I ran while still in the store after the usual test call and text was a speed test. ;)

BTW, should anyone be interested, I'm writing about my experiences with the PQ over on the Sprint site...

*sigh*. Would be to easy if everything just worked. I am unable to receive any MMS message whether roaming, on Sprint or connected to Airave. The notification comes in but i need to press the button that says download, and that still fails. I have auto retrieve for MMS messages enabled. Any others have this problem?

Also, any users with this phone..if you login to your sprint account do you see this as a feature listed:

  • Unltd Nationwide Direct Connect
  • Unlimited Group Connect

Wondering if the Sprint chat reps didnt change my phone and such over correctly during activation.

There are discussions on the Motorola corporate discussion forums about this problem with the PQ. Motorola recognizes it and is working on it. Expect an OTA update to fix once they get the problem sorted out.

  • "Just to let users know, Motorola is aware of the MMS issue and is working on it. For the time being, as a temporary work around you can use a third party messaging app, such as Go SMS, or Handcent. I'm sure you'll be the first too know when this issue is resolved."

I just realized tonight that you can be on a call and still use 3G to access the internet. I guess this has been around for a bit (SVDO), but this is the first device that I've had that has this capability. I recieved an email while on a call, and I was wondering how in the heck that happened, lol. I noticed that the 3G icon was there (because it usually disappears when making a call) and I went to Facebook. Lo and behold it loaded! I was thrilled to say the least. Now GSM doesn't have that advantage any more over CDMA! :P

I got to play with a Photon Q today at a Sprint store in Gig Harbor, WA today, and it's a very nice phone. I was very impressed. Very well built. Now it's a toss up between the GS 3, the Photon Q, & the iPhone LTE. But I really like the phone.

GSM never had that ability, the devices did. It's all about the phone.

Makes sense. I never knew that until I started looking into this the other night. Guess I need to research things more, haha.

Actually, I want all 3 phones. Then I can finally pick a phone to match my mood, lol. The Photon Q is a very sturdy device. I had a Droid 2 Global, and the Photon is much better in quality than it.

I thought that you were getting money together to buy more Sprint shares from Big Slim's Sports Book and Stocks.

No, I need a new computer. And i think my 2nd Viper is tweaked too. So i have to take it in again. Maybe they will exchange it with a better phone.

THERE IS A PHOTON Q MMS PROBLEM FIX!!!

Steps to follow:

1. Open your dial pad and dial ##3282#

2. Tap on Data Profile

3. Review Username

The user name has an extra "_.com" on the end of it.

When trying to edit this info-it asks for passcode (MSL code).

You have to call Sprint to get this number and they will also update your profile within their system (remind them to do it).

Just did it on my Photon Q and the CSR at Sprint found the note on the problem in her system and corrected my profile username IN THEIR SYSTEM.

Call took about a minute.

Pass the word on other forums you are on!

(Extra Bonus: You get your MSL with no hassle.) :D

Thanks to Miss Hayley Meredith for originally posting this elsewhere...

    • Excuse my rookie comments here, but after enabling *#73#, it seems that the rainbow sim V2? requires n70 (I turned it off along with n71 - was hoping to track n66) to be available else it switches to T-Mobile.  So this confirms my suspicion that you need to be close to a site to get on Dish.  Have no idea why they don't just use plmn. To test, I put it into a s21 ultra, rebooted twice, came up on T-Mobile (no n70 on s21).  Tried to manually register on 313340, but it did not connect (tried twice). I am on factory unlocked firmware but used a s22 hack to get *#73# working.  Tried what you were suggesting with a T-Mobile sim partially installed, but that was very unstable with Dish ( I think they had figured that one out).  [edit: and now I see Boost sent me a successful device swap notice which says I can now begin to use my new device.  Sigh.  Will try again later and wait for this message - too impatient.]
    • Hopefully this indicates T-Mobile hasn't completely abandoned mmwave and/or small cells? But then again this is the loop, so take that as you will. Hopefully now that most macro activity is done (besides rural colo/builds), they will start working on small cells.
    • This has been approved.. https://www.cnet.com/tech/mobile/fcc-approves-t-mobiles-deal-to-purchase-mint-mobile/
    • In the conference call they had two question on additional spectrum. One was the 800 spectrum. They are not certain what will happen, thus have not really put it into their plans either way (sale or no sale). They do have a reserve level. Nationwide 800Mhz is seen as great for new technologies which I presume is IOT or 5g slices.  T-Mobile did not bite on use of their c-band or DOD.  mmWave rapidly approaching deadlines not mentioned at all. FWA brushes on this as it deals with underutilized spectrum on a sector by sector basis.  They are willing to take more money to allow FWA to be mobile (think RV or camping). Unsure if this represents a higher priority, for example, FWA Mobile in RVs in Walmart parking lots working where mobile phones need all the capacity. In terms of FWA capacity, their offload strategy is fiber through joint ventures where T-Mobile does the marketing, sales, and customer support while the fiber company does the network planning and installation.  50%-50% financial split not being consolidated into their books. I think discussion of other spectrum would have diluted the fiber joint venture discussion. They do have a fund which one use is to purchase new spectrum. Sale of the 800Mhz would go into this. It should be noted that they continue to buy 2.5Ghz spectrum from schools etc to replace leases. They will have a conference this fall  to update their overall strategies. Other notes from the call are 75% of the phones on the network are 5g. About 85% of their sites have n41, n25, and n71, 90% 5g.  93% of traffic is on midband.  SA is also adding to their performance advantage, which they figure is still ahead of other carriers by two years. It took two weeks to put the auction 108 spectrum to use at their existing sites. Mention was also made that their site spacing was designed for midrange thus no gaps in n41 coverage, while competitors was designed for lowband thus toggles back and forth for n77 also with its shorter range.
    • The manual network selection sounds like it isn't always scanning NR, hence Dish not showing up. Your easiest way to force Dish is going to be forcing the phone into NR-only mode (*#*#4636#*#* menu?), since rainbow sims don't support SA on T-Mobile.
