iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus User Thread

I guess the moral of the story here is to not put your phone in your pocket and sit on it unless you have it in a sturdy case, and to wait for reviews for iOS updates first.

I still haven't gotten my 6+ (waiting on the metaphorical 'slow boat from China' as we speak) but I'm glad I didn't attempt 8.0.1 on my 5.

Its apparently only effecting 6/6+ users from what I've read across the net.

And Yeh, just be careful with the phone lol. You can bend a knife in the middle too if you apply enough force, but that's not how it's meant to be used lol

I've read the same, but Apple has pulled 8.0.1 from the OTA updates at the moment to fix the problem so I'm not even worrying about the update for the time being. When they re-release it I'll watch for comments on macrumors first :)

Apple is doomed. We should all throw our iPhones away. They're useless anyways. Because they might bend if I try with force to bend it. And ios 8.0.1 temporarily crashed some devices ( how unfortunate nobody can do a restore....oh wait they can) lol

Apple is doomed.

Not the bending issue. I would expect aluminum to bend easier than some other phones.

Pushing out an update that bricks people's phones and leaves many with no way to correct it is a colossal failure.

Iphone 6+ bend test

Note 3 bend test

Instead of antennagate it is bendgate.  Does Apple issue titanium bumpers, instead of rubber ones for antennagate, to add extra strength ;) ?  This is definitely a design flaw and not found on all phones (i.e. note 3 video).  I think it's time to stop going thin with Al body.  Anyone?

Maybe it is just me, but this Apple iPhone release seems a little different than previous iterations.

I was really hoping to like the iPhone 6/+ a lot and possibly go back to iOS from my G3, but I just can't bring myself to do it. There are things I really miss about iOS, especially since all of my other devices are part of the Apple ecosystem. The G3 does almost everything perfectly from a form and function standpoint - I just really miss Apple integration with their ecosystem that I am locked out of using Android. The nerd in me just appreciates the more open and customizable aspects of Android, currently.

To you current iPhone 6 guys, congrats! It is a nice upgrade from the 5/5s, especially on the Sprint network.

Maybe next time, Apple. :)

I had to like this post purely for the sarcasm.  :D

If you updated to iOS 8.0.1 and are experiencing the "No Service" and no Touch ID problem, download iOS 8.0 onto your PC, back up your device, and do Shift+Update and select the 8.0 IPSW and let it go back down to 8.0. Apple took down the 8.0.1 update from OTA and is working on a fix for it now. So far, this is the only remedy I have seen for the problem. Luckily I haven't updated to 8.0.1 yet ;)

Very true, but like jamisonshaw said, a lot of people don't know how to do stuff like this on iOS.  Now what I am about to say is extremely stereotypical, but I don't care...  A lot of apple users go to iOS because it is supposed to work as is.  Most in this ecosystem like it because they don't have to tinker with things to get them to work better or to customize it to their needs.

Android tends to get a lot more of the technical customers that know how, or at least figure out how to deal with restores, flashing of firmware, ROMs, etc.

I like both worlds, but unfortunately a lot of people are going to have a very hard time letting this mistake go.  I won't...  I read the forums and waited to update, but I hope there is a quick fix in store for those non-technical users that can't use their phones for phone calls anymore.

Did you restore from a backup to your 6'? And have you tried using "Reset Network Settings"? Settings, General, Reset, Reset Network Settings.

Sent from my iPhone 5S using Tapatalk

I set up the 6 as a new phone (as performance always seems to be better). I've tried about everything, and the reset network settings as well now. It's very odd. Even with a VPN (which I use very rarely), upload speeds seem limited to 1 Mbps. Someone suggested it could be the band 25 antenna design, but I find it hard to believe because watching the speed tests run, they seem to start out fast and then drop down to around 1 Mbps immediately.. Late last night, when I was getting about 18-20 down, upload speeds increased to about 1.3 up, but still doesn't feel right. It feels oddly artificial. I'm really confused!

Have you had Sprint check on the provisioning on your account? And last thing, if all else fails, take it to Apple and have them test it.

I'm going to talk to Sprint now and see what they have to say. If nothing comes of that, I'll go to Apple. Thank you very much.

(And if anyone else has any thoughts, please let me know :)

The 6 plus does bend pretty easily. I know some one that had his damaged. He kept it in his front pants pocket and it is already warped pretty bad, it still works though. He doesn't wear tight pants either, usually wears a suit. Has anyone here had theirs bend and have success with Apple or Sprint replacing it free?

Keep in mind the video I posted a page back showing the bending of an Iphone 6+ was in the open air.  If a phone has been in your pocket (front or back), it will be much warmer that the video conditions because your pocket acts as an insulator for all the heat the phone is generating.  Most materials, especially Al, become weaker at higher temperatures.  After a bit of research, the creep strength (related to malleability) will decrease almost 20% over 50 C for Aluminum.  Here in lies the problem.  Did Apple test bending?  If they did (I hope they did), did they qualify the structural response under higher temperatures?  This really makes me want to do a finite element analysis for the structural response of the iphone case to thermal and structural loading.  If I only I had time while at work.

It's hard to say how many actual people were affected by this.  It only happened to brand new iPhone 6 and 6+ users.  I was never even prompted to install the update on my 6, so I didn't even know there was an 8.0.1 update until I saw that it was out and had issues.

However many it was, it's unfortunate because affected and unaffected users alike are going to think twice before installing 8.0.2 whenever it arrives.

That sucks. He tried to bend it back and the housing cracked which also cracked the screen so looks like he will be eating the deductible to replace it. I don't want anyone thinking I am dissing the phone, but I'm surprised how fragile it is. It is a nice phone though, if those bezels weren't so ridiculous I might even consider switching. I wonder what aluminum alloy they used to make it.

Quick question for you guys:

I just upgraded from a 5 to a 6 Plus. I kept my old plan, the Everything Data plan with 450 minutes.

My iPhone 6 upload speeds seem to be "locked" at about 1 Mbps. Every speed test returns speeds very close to that.

When I switch the SIM to my iPhone 5, my upload speeds are immediately back to the 6 or 7 Mbps that are normal for the tower I'm connecting to. (I used field test mode to ensure I was connecting to the same site). It is band 25 and signal strength shows -80 dBm)

At first I thought it could be the tower prioritization thing, but I highly doubt this for a number of reasons:

1) the Everything Data plan doesn't include the same terms as the newer unlimited plans regarding lesser prioritization

2) Switching back to my iPhone 5 immediately restores my upload speeds back to normal

3. Although I might be in the top 5 percent of data users, this still doesn't make sense as I'm not sure that applies to the Everything Data plan, not to mention my speeds go back to normal when switching back to the iPhone 5... And I'm not using my phone to stream constantly on my TV or anything abuseful like that as is prohibited.

Ideas, anyone?

Edit: by the way, I'm still on band 25 with full LTE Signal (Field test still shows -80 dBm)... And considering it is 1:37 AM, and a quick speediest shows speeds of 19 Mbps down but still limited to 1 Mbps up (almost every test is beteeen .9 and 1.1 Mbps, it feels very artificial), I'm relatively certain this isn't a tower prioritization issue.... and I've updated PRL and all that too..

Just a follow up on this for anyone who is interested: I talked to a Sprint rep via support chat. She was very thorough, and made sure to reset and update everything on their end, my end, etc.

Ultimately, after quite awhile confirming it was nothing wrong with my account and such, she was then able to let me know that this is a known issue that both Sprint and Apple are aware of and are working on a fix.

I asked it it was nationwide, and she said she assumed it was because she was able to confirm that Apple was aware of the problem and working on it.

Got my 6 back down.  Apple chat confirmed 8.0.1 only affected the 6 and 6+ for this no network issue.  It took me an hour as I had to download 8.0 again.  Restored and working.  Chat also confirmed for me that 8.0.1 will be up in a couple of days.  HOwever, this time I am going to wait a couple of days.

I regularly get well over 1MB upload on speed tests on my iPhone 6, so thankfully not all Sprint users are affected.  Maybe it's a Band 25 bug?  I seem to mostly be on Band 41 nowadays.

It very well could be a band 25 bug. I know people often say to take what support reps say with a grain of salt, but she seemed very confident that it was a known issue, so I'm hoping it will be fixed sooner rather than later.

I'm on B25 more often than not, and I average around 6-8 mbps for upload so it doesn't affect everyone with iPhone 6s.  Interesting that Sprint said it is a known bug...  Hmmm.

    • https://www.t-mobile.com/2023-annual-report Most items s4gru members will be aware of, but an interesting read.
    • I've now seen 100 MHz n77 from SoftBank and 100 MHz n78 from NTT. NTT seems to be a bit better south of Osaka, though in some cases it drops down to B19 LTE as some areas around here are pretty rural. SoftBank has n77 around, but it's flakey enough that I switched eSIMs earlier this morning.
    • I'm currently typing this from a bullet train headed from Tokyo to Osaka. Using a roaming eSIM rather than T-Mobile as it's a lot cheaper, but I'll start with T-Mobile's roaming experience. Since I have a business line, I can't add data packs online, so I'm just using the 256 kbps baseline service you get by default. That service runs on Softank 4G. SoftBank has a well-built-out LTE network though, with plenty of B41, falling back to B1/3/8 as needed. 5G roaming from T-Mobile doesn't appear to exist though. I've seen 20+10 MHz B41 when I've looked, generally speaking. WiFi calling works well, and voice calls over LTE work fine too (I forgot to turn WiFi back on after doing some testing, so I expect my bill to be a dollar more next month). I want to say I even got HD voice over the cell network for the VoLTE call I did. I have a bunch of eSIMs and a couple of physical SIMs to try out. I've gotten the eSIMs up and running, but last I checked the physical SIM wasn't working even after activation so I'll run through eSIMs for the moment and update this thread with pSIM info and details on not-Tokyo in the coming days. First off, there's US Mobile's complimentary East Asia eSIM (5GB) that I grabbed before my unlimited plan Stateside expired. That SIM uses SIM Club, routing through Singapore, running on SoftBank LTE and 5G. I've seen 40 MHz n77, as well as 10x10 n28, and have seen download speeds in excess of 200 Mbps with uploads of more than 50 Mbps, though typical speeds are slower. Routing is via Equinix/Packet.net. 5G coverage is rather spotty, but LTE is plenty fast enough; either my phone doesn't want to use the 5G band combos that have more coverage or 5G coverage is just spottier here than in the US (at least on T-Mibile). Latency is as low as 95ms to sites in Singapore (usually closer to 120ms), which is pretty great considering the 3300 mi between Tokyo and Singapore. Next there's Ubigi. It also routes through Singapore via Transatel (despite being owned by NTT), and sites on top of NTT docomo's network. I didn't see NTT 5G in Tokyo when I tested it, but since then I've seen 10x10 n28, and have seen B1/B3/B19 on the LTE side. So far it's not the fastest thing out there, but I'm guessing coverage will be a little better...or maybe not. This was $17 for 10GB. Latency is a bit higher to Singapore, but still under 150ms it seems. Then there's Airalo, which was the cheapest when I bought it at $9 for 10GB. It also routes through Singapore (on Singtel), but on my S24 I have my pick of KDDI (au) or SoftBank. KDDI has extensive B41 coverage and I've seen 20+20 with UL CA. While waiting for the train at HND Terminal 3 (Keikyu line) I hit 250+ Mbps down and 10+ Mbps up...over LTE...with pretty respectable latency numbers (not much above 100ms). This is in adition to supporting SoftBank, also on LTE (my S24 defaulted to KDDI, while my wife's Pixel 8 defaulted to SoftBank and didn't seem to want to connect to KDDI). Of the various carriers mentioned, I'd say this was the best pick, though prices have bumped back up to $18 for the 10GB plan...but it's probably still what I'd pick if I had to pick just one carrier. Then there's Saily, which uses Truphone out of Hong Kong. I haven't used this as much, as I only grabbed 3GB for $7. It runs on NTT but doesn't seem to have 5G access and doesn't seem to have as good speeds. Yes, Hong Kong is way closer to Japan, but latency didn't seem to be any better, at ~150ms. In all cases, I've had reception even in train tunnels and even at high speed on the bullet train, on all three carriers I've tried (I don't think I'll be able to play with a Rakuten SIM, which is rather disappointing). There have been cases where service has degraded, but it looks like you'd have reasonable cell service no matter which of the big three carriers you picked...and since T-Mobile roams on one of them, that's good enough if you're content to buy day passes.
    • https://www.phonearena.com/news/t-mobile-older-rate-plan-prices-june_id157821 We're on Sprint Max for our seven phone/two Apple Watch (with Cellular) family plan... Because it doesn't make sense to switch to anything else, especially if we can't even finance all of our devices. Some of you may recall that T-Mobile suddenly cut our credit limit to $1,500 (which is barely more than one iPhone 15 Pro) with no notice at all. I escalated it to the Office of the CEO and was told to pound sand, even though I have 800+ Credit as a longtime customer and was suddenly being treated as a deadbeat. I ultimately upgraded my three iPhone lines directly through Apple and they're Unlocked. I haven't bothered to check on whether my Credit Limit has updated, but I don't plan on upgrading them through T-Mobile again. I guess we'll find out if "Sprint Max" counts as "older" soon enough.
