SignalCheck Pro has been updated! Version 4.22 should be available on Google Play shortly. Here is the changelog:

 

Added workaround for Android 4.4+ bug which stops icon and widget updates; KitKat devices now require the main status bar icon to be enabled until another solution is found. (Pro)

This is the main reason for this update. Testing indicates the issues appear to be resolved, including if you clear SignalCheck from the Recent Apps screen. The mandatory icon may change in the future, depending on how Google handles the bug. Please holler if you experience any problems.

 

Resolved issue with no connection showing when in LTE-only mode.

Changed 1X and eHRPD/EV-DO sections to indicate “Disabled” when in LTE-only mode.

This should be useful for a lot of users on here and might help show Band 41 connections that were previously not appearing in the app.

 

Added release date to About screen.

Added Samsung “Hidden Menu” back to System Shortcuts. (Pro)

Some Samsung phones do not work well with the standard shortcuts, so the previous method is back as another menu option.

 

Resolved issue with force closes when connecting to LTE in certain situations.

Some users experienced some freezing/crashing problems, this should now be resolved.

 

Updated provider database.

Corrections to some international providers.

 

As usual, Lite users will get their update in about a week. Thank you once again to everyone.. SignalCheck was released one year ago this week.. never imagined it would ever have over 28,000 total downloads, let alone in the first year!

I made what appears to be some reasonable progress with Samsung support earlier tonight.. they opened a ticket for the incorrect LTE MCC-MNC ID (the S4T always shows 310120) and missing GCI/PCI/TAC on the S4T. Now that I have my foot in the door, I would like to try making some progress with the two biggest issues on their other devices.

 

I need help from Samsung users to collect some data to pass along. Please e-mail me if you have a Samsung device other than the S4T that is experiencing either of the following issues on a stock ROM, even if you have previously reported it to me:

• Incorrect LTE MCC-MNC (i.e. 31000/310000) on any Android version
• Missing LTE GCI/PCI on Android 4.2 or newer

 

Use this link to e-mail me with a pre-filled template, or send it to support-at-bluelinepc-dot-com with something like "Samsung baseband bug" as the subject, and include the following info:

• Which bug (or both) you are experiencing
• Model (i.e. SPH-L720; grab it from Settings > About phone)
• Mobile provider (i.e. Sprint)
• Baseband version (from Settings > About phone)
• Android version (i.e. 4.2.2)

 

I have no idea how seriously they will take me, but it can't hurt to try. HTC has been surprisingly receptive, so perhaps the right folks at Samsung will be as well.

If you were on stock, and know the bugs existed there, feel free to send it. I just don't want to blame Samsung for something that might be an issue with a custom ROM. If you're on a ROM that is just a tweak of the stock version, that should be fine too, it would share the same radio guts. That being said, I think the missing PCI exists across the board on their Sprint devices. If you're seeing the 31000 issue, that's probably happening on the stock ROM too.

Mike you ever use dashclock? It works with daydream which is Androids "screensaver". A lot of extensions are out for it including some network status ones. I know you have a lot of your plate, but was wondering if you can take a peek at it and maybe make SC compatible with it, if it's easy. Good way to glance at your phone and see network status without turning it on.

I hadn't heard of it until recently, when someone else asked about it.. I started using it myself, and like it. I do intend to add a SignalCheck plug-in to it -- it's already on the to-do list. When you get the Brian Klug endorsement, you know that you are doing something right.  And I know from my discussions with Brian that he values engineering screen type metrics as much as I do.  We have long needed a quasi engineering screen app that is handset agnostic -- because so many non Sprint handsets have their engineering screens blocked or removed.  SignalCheck Pro nicely fills that niche.

 

Mike, I noticed that you have surpassed the 1000 download mark.  Would you feel comfortable sharing with us how well you have done?  You certainly deserve whatever you have reaped.

I'm just glad that I got the right idea at the right time, and decided to teach myself Java and how to create an app. I've enjoyed doing it and the compliments from S4GRU folks and elsewhere is very rewarding. If the compliments come from someone who knows what they are talking about, it's even more rewarding. It's starting to become bigger than I ever imagined, and I'm always trying to come up with new ideas to make it better. Unfortunately, a lot of the best ideas go up in smoke when I try implementing them!

 

I saw a guy at the grocery store tonight wearing a "Verizon LTE Team" fleece, looked like he was probably an exec.. I really really wanted to interrupt his focus on selecting the perfect bunch of bananas, but I thought it might a little weird if a complete stranger started grilling a guy about his network in the produce aisle. Of course, if it was a Sprint fleece, I wouldn't have hesitated.. 

 

I don't mind sharing some numbers.. here are some stats as of yesterday. All totals are since 1/3/13, the first public release of SignalCheck Lite:

• Over 28,500 different users have installed Lite (86%) or Pro (14%) on at least one device at some point.
• Over 10,100 different users currently have Lite (73%) or Pro (27%) installed on over 12,700 devices.
• 30% of Lite users still have it installed. 70% of Pro users still have it installed.
• Users currently have Lite installed on an average of 1.16 devices, and Pro on an average of 1.52 devices.

I am amazed when I think about how over 28,000 people tried one of them at least once, and it's still on almost 13,000 devices. Awesome stuff. My sincerest thanks to every single one of you!

I do not even look at my signal bars on any of my phones anymore. It's all SignalCheck numbers. Half tempted to do a simple mod of removing the signal bars. Right next to Signal Check is the data rate meter. Ultimate way to see what's going on.

Just two dashes in the notification bar. And if I try to open the app it crashes. The only way to get it running again is by restarting my phone. Wondering if anyone else has had this issue?

I've seen something like that.

 

Are either of you guys hitting the Reset Connection button (or menu option)? For some reason, the N5 is suddenly having issues with this lately.. but not every time, it's inconsistent. I've been seeing it myself and receiving reports from others. It will reset the connection, but the app freezes and must be force closed. Once you open it back up again, it works fine. The crash reports indicate it is not crashing at a specific point in the code, it's totally random -- which makes me think it's something external causing the issue.

 

I have made improvements to the Reset code that will be included in the next update, but I don't think it helped the crashing. Wondering if there was a recent Google Play Services update that is causing this. That is the only thing I am aware of that updates itself in the background without any user knowledge.

 

EDIT: Make sure you are on the latest version (4.22).. it fixes the issue where the background service was getting killed off. That caused the icons/widget to freeze no matter what your connection status was.

I have to comment on that last stat, as it boggles my mind.  The vast majority of SignalCheck Lite users actually uninstall it?  Why is the Lite retention rate only 30 percent?  Or is that low retention rate simply characteristic of free apps in general?
