Network Vision/LTE - Charlotte Market

This morning for the first time, I got 4G inside my new condo at Queens and Providence... Previously, my signal was only so-so for even voice and 3G!!! That was compared to my previous apartment near Providence and Fairview where I'd been getting 4G inside regularly for a number of months.. Progress!!

Oh snap, 4G just lit up at the house today! I got home and cycled airplane mode around 3 to no avail. About 4-4:15, I look down at my phone JUST as the wifi blips off and 4G appears! :tu: The RSRP is hanging around the -110 to -115 neighborhood, give or take, so it's not hanging on by much, but I'm still pulling about 5-6Mb down with that, which is impressive for that weak of a signal. I'll get out and map some tonight or tomorrow on Sensorly and see which tower it is.

 

EDIT: Looks like someone's been busy mapping Kannapolis already. I wonder if the Alcatel-Lucent contractors are doing that while testing. Looks like it's coming from the tower near Old Concord-Salisbury and Lane St. That should light up I-85 in the area pretty well, since it's right in a bend of the interstate.

I drove from Albemarle to Salisbury via Hwy 52 and to Kannapolis yesterday. We had LTE coverage for over 75% of the trip. My kids were able to stream Netflix until we hit Salisbury. I mapped hwy 52 and some parts of Kannapolis.

Nice, I just mapped a good bit of the Cabarrus county part of Kannapolis today. I stand corrected, the tower at 29 & 3 is the one that's lit up, not the one at Lane & Old Concord-Salisbury Rd (the coverage over in that area doesn't look to be strong enough for that tower to be live). Either my EVO is a poor LTE performer or that tower's not reaching quite as far as I'd like it to, as LTE was really spotty in downtown Kannapolis around the old mill and the Gem theater...and that's not that far away from the tower. At any rate, it's still FAR better than 3G.

I just tried to map down Hwy 200 from 601 today and the tower at the Concord Speedway must be aimed nowhere NEAR Locust because the 4G didn't even make it halfway to Mt. Pleasant Rd...

 

I don't think that tower is broadcasting...or it may just be a repeater...... A month ago I was on Flowes store rd E (1/4 mile south of that tower) and got LTE on my wife's Iphone 5. Since then I've not been able to pick up LTE. The same for the tower on Plaza rd ext and I-485 / rocky river rd.

According to Sprint's 4G LTE coverage map, it looks like Mooresville has been launched, although there are of course some parts without coverage, up and down Hwy 21. Unless coverage was just added up Hwy 21 from I-77 into Troutman in the last 2 weeks, that part of the Sprint LTE map is caca.

The tower on 51 near Providence is showing a "data speed upgrade" on the network.sprint.com maps, but nothing on S4GRU yet (I know Robert is on vacation). This is around where I live so I am naturally anxious to see progress in this area.

I've noticed that 3G speeds are faster in that area. I can even pull LTE in parts of the Arboretum parking lot, though based on the signal strength I believe it's from a distant tower.

It lumps Sailsbury, Shelby, Lincolnton and Albermarle in with us. So to answer Lilpon more accurately, Sprint will flip the switch on April 12th.

I just got done taking a look and we're actually on the Sprint maps now... they may still be working on it, but it looks fairly accurate...I'm suprised they didn't "bolster" the maps, heheh...

Looks like that leaked release date didn't happen disappointed since my bday is tomorrow.

Sensorly and the Sprint coverage map both show LTE in Concord. You just haven't visited the right part of town.

I'm literally a quarter mile maybe less from getting LTE right down the street. You would think since I'm that close if they flipped the switch I should get it right?

There's no switch flip, unless you want to call what happens on each individual tower a "switch flip."

I know that there is a tower at 29 & pitts school road broadcasting 4g lte. I live off of pitts school in a neighborhood across the street from Robinson High school (prob a 1-2 miles from intersection). I am able to get a full signal at the intersection of 29 and pitts school road, but get nothing at my house (had to order an AIRAVE). Just curious any thoughts why in my neighborhood I get nothing? I am wondering if the landfill on pitts school is playing a role or if the tower is broadcasting the signal in a certain direction? Thanks so much for the help Guys!

Crews are currently working on the tower near hwy 49 and Strough. You should observe new panels on that tower. I also took pictures of the same crew installing NV panels @ rocky river / i-485 & plz ext.

Are you high? :lol: Like njjdnt said, there's a good bit of LTE in Concord. Hwy 29 is solid through Concord, the northern part of Harrisburg and part of downtown Concord have LTE (albeit the signal's on the weak side from towers further away - for now), and it's on 49 from Central Cabarrus HS down past 601 (haven't been down past that in quite some time to know how it is closer to Mt. Pleasant).

 

Crews are currently working on the tower near hwy 49 and Strough. You should observe new panels on that tower. I also took pictures of the same crew installing NV panels @ rocky river / i-485 & plz ext.

 

NICE! I've been waiting on the one at 49 & Stough. I was hoping the panels would be on that massive tower, but I think only government / state stuff is allowed on that. That tower alone will light up Harrisburg quite nicely and fill in the gap on Hwy 49 up to Central Cabarrus. That tower's also going to have to be responsible for lighting up pretty much all of Roberta Rd from what I can tell, but I could be wrong. The one at Rocky River and 485 will fill quite a gap too.

I remember commuting down 29 and having LTE (a few pages back) the first morning that one was lit up. It's hot too with my speed tests running 25-26Mb at Pitts School & 29 - unfortunately, that tower is NOT aimed down Pitts School in your direction (towards the Carolando neighborhood and Robinson HS. It just BARELY reaches to Robinson with my EVO and cuts out after that. Seems like it's aimed in 3 directions, primarily - up and down 29 and up Pitts School towards I-85, as it reaches to the intersection at Weddington Rd. I hate to say it because of the distance, but you may have to rely on LTE from the tower at Stough and 49. It's kind of like the tower at the triangle (29/601/W. Cabarrus Ave) - it's very strong as well, but it's aimed up and down 29 and out Rock Hill Church Rd, so there's nothing left to go down Union Cemetery Rd and back that way. You and Lilpon should become sponsors and check out the maps to see where LTE is live and where all the planned towers are.

The new Sprint LTE map for Charlotte pretty much matches my experience the last several months including those areas that LTE drops out on my route home.. At my previous place I lived, I would get LTE inside yet the map doesn't show that the signal strong enough to work inside.. I know these are all estimates.. I used to drive over Tyvola from I-77 towards SouthPark which they show now as in LTE network.. I never got it along that route until I got very close to the mall.. maybe they turned something on in the last few weeks since I was on that route...

    • On Reddit, someone asked (skeptically) if the US Cellular buyout would result in better service.  I'd been pondering this very issue, and decided to cross-post my response here: I've been pondering the question in the title and I've come to the conclusion that the answer is that it's possible. Hear me out. Unlike some of the small carriers that work exclusively with one larger carrier, all three major carriers roam on US Cellular today in at least some areas, so far as I know. If that network ceases to exist, then the carriers would presumably want to recover those areas of lost service by building out natively. Thus, people in those areas who may only have service from US Cellular or from US Cellular and one other may gain competition from other carriers backfilling that loss. How likely is it? I'm not sure. But it's definitely feasible. Most notably, AT&T did their big roaming deal with US Cellular in support of FirstNet in places where they lacked native coverage. They can't just lose a huge chunk of coverage whole still making FirstNet happy; I suspect they'll have to build out and recover at least some of that area, if not most of it. So it'd be indirect, but I could imagine it. - Trip
    • Historically, T-Mobile has been the only carrier contracting with Crown Castle Solutions, at least in Brooklyn. I did a quick count of the ~35 nodes currently marked as "installed" and everything mapped appears to be T-Mobile. However, they have a macro sector pointed directly at this site and seem to continue relying on the older-style DAS nodes. Additionally, there's another Crown Castle Solutions node approved for construction just around the corner, well within range of their macro. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Verizon using a new vendor for their mmWave build, especially since the macro site directly behind this node lacks mmWave/CBRS deployment (limited to LTE plus C-Band). However, opting for a multi-carrier solution here seems unlikely unless another carrier has actually joined the build. This node is equidistant (about five blocks) between two AT&T macro sites, and there are no oDAS nodes deployed nearby. Although I'm not currently mapping AT&T, based on CellMapper, it appears to be right on cell edge for both sites. Regardless, it appears that whoever is deploying is planning for a significant build. There are eight Crown Castle Solutions nodes approved for construction in a 12-block by 2-block area.
    • Starlink (1900mhz) for T-Mobile, AST SpaceMobile (700mhz and 850mhz) for AT&T, GlobalStar (unknown frequency) for Apple, Iridium (unknown frequency) for Samsung, and AST SpaceMobile (850mhz) for Verizon only work on frequency bands the carrier has licensed nationwide.  These systems broadcast and listen on multiple frequencies at the same time in areas much wider than normal cellular market license areas.  They would struggle with only broadcasting certain frequencies only in certain markets so instead they require a nationwide license.  With the antennas that are included on the satellites, they have range of cellular band frequencies they support and can have different frequencies with different providers in each supported country.  The cellular bands in use are typically 5mhz x 5mhz bands (37.5mbps total for the entire cell) or smaller so they do not have a lot of data bandwidth for the satellite band covering a very large plot of land with potentially millions of customers in a single large cellular satellite cell.  I have heard that each of Starlink's cells sharing that bandwidth will cover 75 or more miles. Satellite cellular connectivity will be set to the lowest priority connection just before SOS service on supported mobile devices and is made available nationwide in supported countries.  The mobile device rules pushed by the provider decide when and where the device is allowed to connect to the satellite service and what services can be provided over that connection.  The satellite has a weak receiving antenna and is moving very quickly so any significant obstructions above your mobile device antenna could cause it not to work.  All the cellular satellite services are starting with texting only and some of them like Apple's solution only support a predefined set of text messages.  Eventually it is expected that a limited number of simultaneous voice calls (VoLTE) will run on these per satellite cell.  Any spare data will then be available as an extremely slow LTE data connection as it could potentially be shared by millions of people.  Satellite data from the way these are currently configured will likely never work well enough to use unless you are in a very remote location.
    • T-Mobile owns the PCS G-block across the contiguous U.S. so they can just use that spectrum to broadcast direct to cell. Ideally your phone would only connect to it in areas where there isn't any terrestrial service available.
