Official Tmobile-Sprint merger discussion thread

I noticed on my phone that T-Mobile has reordered the band priority moving B41 from second to third. Previously it went B25->B41->B26; now it goes B25->B26->B41. This explains why I have been connecting to B26 a LOT more often than I used to. My guess is this is part of the preliminary steps to phase out B41.

The band priority on the phone itself is just the scan order. So if it loses service, or comes out of airplane mode, it will scan the bands in that order. Once it's connected to the network, the phone has absolutely no say in which band it's on (other than reporting signal strength of neighbor cells back to the tower so the tower can decide where to put the phone). It's completely controlled by the network, and within a minute or less it will move you to where it wants you. All you can do is completely disable bands on the device if you want to avoid it.

I have been in remote places where band order determined real order, but never in urban areas.

Any news come out of this today?

These are simply pep rallies, nothing of any substance is ever presented. Its a good opportunity to take a nap during these nonsense rallies. My 2 cents

I would think Sprint network employees would be most vulnerable when the Sprint network is eliminated.  Up to that point they need to keep both networks operational. I have heard reports of some work still being done on Sprint sites since April 1 just to retain Sprint customers (like maintenance or increasing backhaul to make a site function). In some markets the T-Mobile network staff has a lot of former pre-merger Sprint network employees.

Your post is on the publicly visible side of S4gru.com, which could threaten your or other posters if employed now by T-Mobile.  You might want to donate do you could post inside the paywall.

Most people are this site for technical information so there might be better forums.

Thanks for your advice.

Hey, y’all I just finally received the Sprint/T-Mobile network upgrades email this morning and actually saw a tower on I-390 being consolidated as it had 4 sets of antenna bars but only has 3 now with a wire/cable going down to the ground!
Later on, I drove up to the tower and saw two engineers working on it. Not sure if you’re able to zoom to the top but there is an engineer looking down and probably wondering why the hell I was taking a pic lol.

Good observation.  Seems a bit windy given the curve in the climbing rope.  Most tower hands will talk with you if you tell them your a hobbyist and like tracking signals. Mention S4gru.com if they seem skeptical.  Typically they don't want their pictures taken but don't mind you taking pictures of equipment.  Stay out of the drop zone.  Bring a hard hat if you have one, but don't wear it initially.  Just ask them whose rack they are working on, etc.  Installing is often done by a different crew then demolition.  Limited work is still occurring on Sprint equipment to keep up their network.  Expect mostly additions to T-Mobile, especially Band 71.

What kind of phone do you have and what did the email say?

I have hear rumors of iPhone users being offered to have improved phone service, which means changing from Sprint to T-Mobile.  Great if T-Mobile is better at your key places, else no so good. See Samsung Galaxy S20 thread or merger thread to see why. iPhone would not be as easy to correct.  Basically best done once they have actually converted T-Mobile sites by adding n41, which you will have to wait for at least the next version of iPhone.

I always speculated if that would be the case as it always seemed like Android devices performed better on Sprint/Verizon CDMA networks but iPhone performed better on AT&T/T-Mobile GSM. Seems like the New T-Mobile should offer equal performance to both device platforms if they make use of Sprint’s equipment and do not try to replace all of the tower hardware. Hopefully, they'll keep Band 41/2.5 GHz signal live for LTE so us folks with iPhones can take advantage of it until we upgrade.

Are you saying some sprint customers with iPhones are getting offered the update to prioritize the T-Mobile network?

That would make sense but for only customers who have the iPhone XS/Max or newer as those iPhones can utilize Band 71 & Band 41 right now.

I got the same e-mail this morning. I have an iPhone 8plus.

Sounds like T-Mobile is wrapping up network upgrades in the big metros and moving onto the small metros. Rochester and Gainesville must be in the first 100 cities with tiered 5G.

I got the email here north of Detroit,  yesterday....     It's not just "Apple" devices ...    i have an Android phone.      City-by-city... network conversions continue.   Has nothing to do with your phone.        My device is still favoring and staying on Sprint's signals.. so I'm not even sure that email means anything.

You’re most likely correct. I’m still on the Sprint network too. I haven’t roamed on T-mobile at all. Only once back around November in east Gainesville.

Gainesville, FL?

Yes, you’re a smaller metro that’s similar to Rochester in size. I wouldn’t be surprised if New T-Mobile targets small metros/cities that have multiple colleges/universities as college kids will be trying to save $$$ while wanting a popular device.

That definitely makes sense. I hope they are upgrading the area.

That’s all I could come up with for Rochester as it’s always been a fierce competition between Verizon, AT&T, Sprint & T-Mobile going back to the 4G rollout days. We’re a small city that somehow has seven colleges and word of mouth is the best form of advertising as it’s free. You being in FL means there should be retirees who will want to save $$$ as most are on fixed incomes.

Honestly could not tell you, however, I do recall seeing four sets of antennas on that tower as of last week.

The email you received match ads I have seen on TV.

One customer with the latest iPhone told me his phone had a message on it to get improved service basically matching the S20 offer. He declined since no n71 has been found in our market and no n41 on T-Mobile sites has been spotted. I have personally been told there are n41 sites in Ohio in a few out of the way places with no hints given.  None spotted so far, and almost no new T-Mobile permits.

West of Rochester NY into Ohio would benefit from band 71 as Sprint is limited to 1x800 due to Toronto having priority.

    • https://www.t-mobile.com/2023-annual-report Most items s4gru members will be aware of, but an interesting read.
    • I've now seen 100 MHz n77 from SoftBank and 100 MHz n78 from NTT. NTT seems to be a bit better south of Osaka, though in some cases it drops down to B19 LTE as some areas around here are pretty rural. SoftBank has n77 around, but it's flakey enough that I switched eSIMs earlier this morning.
    • I'm currently typing this from a bullet train headed from Tokyo to Osaka. Using a roaming eSIM rather than T-Mobile as it's a lot cheaper, but I'll start with T-Mobile's roaming experience. Since I have a business line, I can't add data packs online, so I'm just using the 256 kbps baseline service you get by default. That service runs on Softank 4G. SoftBank has a well-built-out LTE network though, with plenty of B41, falling back to B1/3/8 as needed. 5G roaming from T-Mobile doesn't appear to exist though. I've seen 20+10 MHz B41 when I've looked, generally speaking. WiFi calling works well, and voice calls over LTE work fine too (I forgot to turn WiFi back on after doing some testing, so I expect my bill to be a dollar more next month). I want to say I even got HD voice over the cell network for the VoLTE call I did. I have a bunch of eSIMs and a couple of physical SIMs to try out. I've gotten the eSIMs up and running, but last I checked the physical SIM wasn't working even after activation so I'll run through eSIMs for the moment and update this thread with pSIM info and details on not-Tokyo in the coming days. First off, there's US Mobile's complimentary East Asia eSIM (5GB) that I grabbed before my unlimited plan Stateside expired. That SIM uses SIM Club, routing through Singapore, running on SoftBank LTE and 5G. I've seen 40 MHz n77, as well as 10x10 n28, and have seen download speeds in excess of 200 Mbps with uploads of more than 50 Mbps, though typical speeds are slower. Routing is via Equinix/Packet.net. 5G coverage is rather spotty, but LTE is plenty fast enough; either my phone doesn't want to use the 5G band combos that have more coverage or 5G coverage is just spottier here than in the US (at least on T-Mibile). Latency is as low as 95ms to sites in Singapore (usually closer to 120ms), which is pretty great considering the 3300 mi between Tokyo and Singapore. Next there's Ubigi. It also routes through Singapore via Transatel (despite being owned by NTT), and sites on top of NTT docomo's network. I didn't see NTT 5G in Tokyo when I tested it, but since then I've seen 10x10 n28, and have seen B1/B3/B19 on the LTE side. So far it's not the fastest thing out there, but I'm guessing coverage will be a little better...or maybe not. This was $17 for 10GB. Latency is a bit higher to Singapore, but still under 150ms it seems. Then there's Airalo, which was the cheapest when I bought it at $9 for 10GB. It also routes through Singapore (on Singtel), but on my S24 I have my pick of KDDI (au) or SoftBank. KDDI has extensive B41 coverage and I've seen 20+20 with UL CA. While waiting for the train at HND Terminal 3 (Keikyu line) I hit 250+ Mbps down and 10+ Mbps up...over LTE...with pretty respectable latency numbers (not much above 100ms). This is in adition to supporting SoftBank, also on LTE (my S24 defaulted to KDDI, while my wife's Pixel 8 defaulted to SoftBank and didn't seem to want to connect to KDDI). Of the various carriers mentioned, I'd say this was the best pick, though prices have bumped back up to $18 for the 10GB plan...but it's probably still what I'd pick if I had to pick just one carrier. Then there's Saily, which uses Truphone out of Hong Kong. I haven't used this as much, as I only grabbed 3GB for $7. It runs on NTT but doesn't seem to have 5G access and doesn't seem to have as good speeds. Yes, Hong Kong is way closer to Japan, but latency didn't seem to be any better, at ~150ms. In all cases, I've had reception even in train tunnels and even at high speed on the bullet train, on all three carriers I've tried (I don't think I'll be able to play with a Rakuten SIM, which is rather disappointing). There have been cases where service has degraded, but it looks like you'd have reasonable cell service no matter which of the big three carriers you picked...and since T-Mobile roams on one of them, that's good enough if you're content to buy day passes.
    • https://www.phonearena.com/news/t-mobile-older-rate-plan-prices-june_id157821 We're on Sprint Max for our seven phone/two Apple Watch (with Cellular) family plan... Because it doesn't make sense to switch to anything else, especially if we can't even finance all of our devices. Some of you may recall that T-Mobile suddenly cut our credit limit to $1,500 (which is barely more than one iPhone 15 Pro) with no notice at all. I escalated it to the Office of the CEO and was told to pound sand, even though I have 800+ Credit as a longtime customer and was suddenly being treated as a deadbeat. I ultimately upgraded my three iPhone lines directly through Apple and they're Unlocked. I haven't bothered to check on whether my Credit Limit has updated, but I don't plan on upgrading them through T-Mobile again. I guess we'll find out if "Sprint Max" counts as "older" soon enough.
