S. Ali.  Of course.

Speaking of entitlement, these people act as if 10 Mbps average is half the network when most people can't tell the difference. I bet they couldn't tell when T-Mobile's network is slowed to 10 Mbps unless they opened Ookla's Crutch, aka Speedtest.net.

Of course T-Mobile is in the business to make money, but guess what, in the process they have forced the hand of rivals to offer more than they ever would have if Legere didn't change the rules of the game. This entire article is full of stupid, it almost sounds like it was written by Verizon themselves. The author should be ashamed for not mentioning anything about spectrum.

First off, even if T-Mobile got 700 MHz nationwide they'd still not have a circuit switched fallback in a whole lot of places. Funny how Mr. Ali neglects that point. He himself had to abandon T-Mobile and go back to Verizon because they had better coverage in his hometown of Pittsburgh, PA. Not exactly a place in the sticks. Fair enough that Verizon has eliminated their contracts, but guess what, they wanted to do that all along. I hold no grudge against T-Mobile making money but they might be better off just charging more and not tossing away gimmicks like Music Freedom and BingeOn. Sure T-Mobile's gaining a lot off AT&T and Sprint, but that has more to do with AT&T not acting like they care all that much about mobile anymore and Sprint, well, imploding. Is T-Mobile really gaining that much off Verizon? From the looks of it, the answer is NO.

That's one of my biggest problems with T-Mobile, even trying to be unbiased. T-Mobile can create a halfway decent if not good data network with low-band in numerous places, but there's no low-band WCDMA/GSM for calling being I'd be the only person I know using T-Mobile. Some younger/nonstandard people don't call little if any, but for those that need to at all it's a deal breaker.

VoLTE has made a lot of progress, but I'm about to get my hands on a Verizon Note 5 and that's going to be a real big tell on how much improvement there is. Chester doesn't really have great coverage with anyone so if there's a test for VoLTE succeeding, I would be living in it.

Well, my sister and brother in law are going T-mobile -> Sprint.

So they are on the $100 for 2x 6GB lines and will be going to $50 at Sprint and also probably getting new phones at Sprint for less than their current PLAN total let alone what they pay at Tmobile for Plan + phones.

Crazy deal.

I wonder if the referral program works with the new plans?

I am not sure who is the bigger jackass -- John Legere or Mike Sievert.  Maybe they are having a contest.

Both Neville Ray and Kathleen Ham seem to stay above the fray.  Good for them.  I do wonder, though, about their work environment.  How do they feel working for two juvenile asshats?

AJ

I assume the majority are fine with the environment... the company is hiring and sales people are making money.   Where as some carriers will be laying off people (waiting for a new severance package to kick in though which gives less to the people)  So in short I suspect they are fine with it....  BUT who knows...

I can't see why it won't. The program was extended to the end of the year, so it should be fine.

S. ALI has a Sprint line too, but on reddit and Howard forum he use the B1gEast alias. These magentans are so dumb that you can spot them a mile away. On the Sprint reddit he behave because the moderator would lay the hammer on him,  no so much at fierce.

I think if the CWA could gain a foothold there, it would end up being a really good thing not just for their workers but for the wireless workers of the US in general.

As Sprint starts to get their network sorted out, I think they should really pivot into a new rate structure.

Similar to how T-Mobile restructured into Simple Choice I think Sprint needs to consolidate all plans.

Unlimited plan

  • $50/Month Unlimited managed network
  • Have unlimited depending on availability
  • Basically, bingeon, radio on, etc but just in a managed sense of allowing sprint to completely control bandwidth depending on availability

Limited plan

  • $10 per line monthly access
  • $10 per gig
  • No managed network

Sprint just needs to rip the marketing band-aid off.  Stop trying to be clever and come up with new lame plans.  Get a plan that existing legacy customers wont churn on and will be simple enough for new customers to be excited about.

Remove discounts, just offer one low price out of the gate.

Sprint doesn't have the management to pull off a radically new rate structure to evolve which is unfortunate because they are certainly building a world class network.

Keep it really really really simple.  $20/month "unlimited" is a scam and treats customers like idiots.  Sprint should and can do better.

It's sad.  The competition will have no other choice but to eventually match T-Mobile's BingeOn/Music Freedom offerings.  This means NN is pretty much screwed.  I can not tell you how often I've read "Well, you lose the unlimited videos/music if you switch to Sprint's cut your bill in half promo."  Customers are seeing value from the favoritism of providers and are shunning the competition that do not match it.  I can see Sprint doing this soon, honestly.  But it'll be a forced hand.

I don't know if the pricing is steep enough to get a quality network as Sprint needs to compete off that. My pricing would probably be more in line with Verizon's with an "all-you-can-eat" option on the top end.

Wireless margins are HUGE.  Basically, the majority of costs are fairly fixed. Adding additional subs (particularly managed subs) are of little consequence to network resources, particularly with Sprint's cost per MB of data (will continue to go down).

If you charged the same as Verizon, nobody would switch from Verizon to Sprint.

  • Sprint has a gross margin of 53.07%
  • Lower ARPU by 20% under this new rate plan and say fine, my gross margins get smoked and go down to 25%
  • Because of easier marketing/administration/cost cuts, etc, factor total EBITDA margin only goes from 21.83% to 10-15%
  • At this point, sprint can start adding subs and cost of service goes down causing gross margin to go back up again
  • Once churn reaches sub-1%, you can start actually increasing rates because customers love you so much

Bottom line, sprint needs to gain subscribers and charging the same as verizon and looking for 50%+ gross margins is not going to fly (in my humble opinion).  We talk about T-Mobile a lot here and they've been growing gross margins significantly, up almost 10% from 9/30/2014 (48.35%) to 9/30/2015 (57.15%).

The question is, how does this affect us as customers leasing devices?

It does not affect customers. I am sure you will still send/receive devices from Sprint. The process of providing new phones to Sprint and receiving lease returns (after they are shipped to Sprint) will be handled by this new company but we, as customers, will interface with Sprint.

    • Today I was driving over in Bothell/Kenmore area. I noticed the site which used to host Sprint eNB 745953 (where Waynita Way NE turns into 100th Ave NE) before it was fully decommissioned last year is now hosting all new T-Mobile gear. The gear isn't live yet but is fully installed. My guess is they plan to decommission the T-Mobile B2/B66 (enB 84647) only site a few blocks up the hill. This is a great move because decommissioning that old site would reduce interference with eNB 84740/175124. At the same time, the new location should notably improve coverage in the geographically shielded area along Waynita/100th.  The weird thing is I can't find a permit for this anywhere!

    • I've now seen 100 MHz n77 from SoftBank and 100 MHz n78 from NTT. NTT seems to be a bit better south of Osaka, though in some cases it drops down to B19 LTE as some areas around here are pretty rural. SoftBank has n77 around, but it's flakey enough that I switched eSIMs earlier this morning.
    • I'm currently typing this from a bullet train headed from Tokyo to Osaka. Using a roaming eSIM rather than T-Mobile as it's a lot cheaper, but I'll start with T-Mobile's roaming experience. Since I have a business line, I can't add data packs online, so I'm just using the 256 kbps baseline service you get by default. That service runs on Softank 4G. SoftBank has a well-built-out LTE network though, with plenty of B41, falling back to B1/3/8 as needed. 5G roaming from T-Mobile doesn't appear to exist though. I've seen 20+10 MHz B41 when I've looked, generally speaking. WiFi calling works well, and voice calls over LTE work fine too (I forgot to turn WiFi back on after doing some testing, so I expect my bill to be a dollar more next month). I want to say I even got HD voice over the cell network for the VoLTE call I did. I have a bunch of eSIMs and a couple of physical SIMs to try out. I've gotten the eSIMs up and running, but last I checked the physical SIM wasn't working even after activation so I'll run through eSIMs for the moment and update this thread with pSIM info and details on not-Tokyo in the coming days. First off, there's US Mobile's complimentary East Asia eSIM (5GB) that I grabbed before my unlimited plan Stateside expired. That SIM uses SIM Club, routing through Singapore, running on SoftBank LTE and 5G. I've seen 40 MHz n77, as well as 10x10 n28, and have seen download speeds in excess of 200 Mbps with uploads of more than 50 Mbps, though typical speeds are slower. Routing is via Equinix/Packet.net. 5G coverage is rather spotty, but LTE is plenty fast enough; either my phone doesn't want to use the 5G band combos that have more coverage or 5G coverage is just spottier here than in the US (at least on T-Mibile). Latency is as low as 95ms to sites in Singapore (usually closer to 120ms), which is pretty great considering the 3300 mi between Tokyo and Singapore. Next there's Ubigi. It also routes through Singapore via Transatel (despite being owned by NTT), and sites on top of NTT docomo's network. I didn't see NTT 5G in Tokyo when I tested it, but since then I've seen 10x10 n28, and have seen B1/B3/B19 on the LTE side. So far it's not the fastest thing out there, but I'm guessing coverage will be a little better...or maybe not. This was $17 for 10GB. Latency is a bit higher to Singapore, but still under 150ms it seems. Then there's Airalo, which was the cheapest when I bought it at $9 for 10GB. It also routes through Singapore (on Singtel), but on my S24 I have my pick of KDDI (au) or SoftBank. KDDI has extensive B41 coverage and I've seen 20+20 with UL CA. While waiting for the train at HND Terminal 3 (Keikyu line) I hit 250+ Mbps down and 10+ Mbps up...over LTE...with pretty respectable latency numbers (not much above 100ms). This is in adition to supporting SoftBank, also on LTE (my S24 defaulted to KDDI, while my wife's Pixel 8 defaulted to SoftBank and didn't seem to want to connect to KDDI). Of the various carriers mentioned, I'd say this was the best pick, though prices have bumped back up to $18 for the 10GB plan...but it's probably still what I'd pick if I had to pick just one carrier. Then there's Saily, which uses Truphone out of Hong Kong. I haven't used this as much, as I only grabbed 3GB for $7. It runs on NTT but doesn't seem to have 5G access and doesn't seem to have as good speeds. Yes, Hong Kong is way closer to Japan, but latency didn't seem to be any better, at ~150ms. In all cases, I've had reception even in train tunnels and even at high speed on the bullet train, on all three carriers I've tried (I don't think I'll be able to play with a Rakuten SIM, which is rather disappointing). There have been cases where service has degraded, but it looks like you'd have reasonable cell service no matter which of the big three carriers you picked...and since T-Mobile roams on one of them, that's good enough if you're content to buy day passes.
