Say hello to the Framily (inexpensive but potentially confusing new Sprint group plan pricing)

The problem is that most people either have a contract that they are in the middle of, already have Sprint or don't want to join Sprint because of various reasons (work plan, family with another carrier, past issues etc). The easiest way to build a group is to start with current Sprint customers who can just migrate over without ETFs. Until Sprint starts swallowing ETFs like TMobile is now doing, it is going to be difficult for people to move over to a Framily group.

Yeah but "past issues, etc." can't be used as an excuse forever.

No matter how much I hate Cablevision, if they offered me a significant deal which was cheaper than my FiOS, I would have to consider it.

Cablevision is good though.

Can any of you who work for Sprint comment on what will happen to the folks who are on ED1500 or similar plans who have upgrades in April-June? Will we lose these upgrades? I am completely opposed to financing a phone. I want ownership of my phone. I want to sell it when I am done with it, not be forced to give it up and not be credited for the amount paid into it.

After the phone is paid off its yours, you have to turn it in if you want to upgrade in 12 months option when you have unlimited data.

Right, but you have to pay full retail on it and its not yours for 2 years. I can't just sell it on eBay when I am done with it and buy another phone on eBay. I hate this. Why can't they just keep it how it has always been. And that doesn't answer the biggest part of my question. I am torn between switching now and paying $5/mo more and losing my upgrades or waiting to see whats going on with my upgrades and missing out on the $45 in waived fees per month.

I don't Iike it much either but switched anyway to save $5 a month because I figured by June when I had a upgrade it would be gone. I haven't got any takers yet on adding to my plan but have a few more to try before I live for a while and come back as a new customer.

Did you try posting it on those websites with the slickdeals or framilycodes or whatever.

you don't (have to) pay the full retail up front though.

You can sell your phone any time you want, but you will still be paying for it (just like you would still be paying for the subsidized version).

you can buy another on ebay, while still paying off the monthly fee from the previous.

as far as what happens when your upgrades are due, who can say what will be going on by then?

I do not work for sprint, but they have not announced the end to subsidies. Further, because you finance the phone it doesn't mean that you do not own the phone any more than buying gas on a credit card means that you don't own the gas. You do not need to turn in your phone to get an upgrade and you can sell your phone at any point. You still owe the amount that you agreed to pay for the phone until that is paid, that is the only implication of financing a phone.

My main issue with this changing of the guard towards no contract/no subsidies is that(as you said before) it will kill the used phone market on ebay. I will no longer be able to buy cheap off contract phones as replacements/upgrades.

I don't think it will kill it completely, however I don't expect it to be as high volume as it may be now.

People are still going want to switch up phones, and 'enterprising' people may still choose to buy new phone upgrades (while keeping their existing phone) and sell it somewhere less than 'full retail'. Even though they may be still be paying for that phone over time, they can get instant cash for it now (even if they don't make an actual profit).

One other thing to consider with these easy pay plans is you may not necessarily be paying the typical $200 up front either.

Yup, I only have one line so people will always join a plan with more on it. I would too. Jo Ann at work is going to send me details of their framily plan and I am going to call and see if I can talk my way or it or leave until I qualify as a new customer and just use one of the virtual networks that Sprint hosts until then. She has 4 and pressuring her son to move 2 phones over to Sprint so if I get on her plan it would be 5 to 7 on it.

So sprint is going gung ho with easy pay and framily. I just had a look at tomorrows new price strips and they only have easy pay and msrp on them. There is no subsidy price listed anywhere on it which is going to confuse so many people.

Sprint is still offering subsidised prices on the phones, for now, they just are not advertised.

I would have to imagine that as long as they haven't bumped you off of your old ED1500 plan that you can still get upgrades subsidized. Otherwise, what a freaking rip-off. I'm not paying for the ED1500 plan price without a subsidy included. Is the thought really that they are going COMPLETELY away from subsidies even on older plans?

Its been repeatedly said here in the midwest on Framily calls with all corporate stores that phones will no longer be sold on subsidy starting very soon.

I have a family plan on ED1500 with staggered contract dates. So if they nix subsidies, I'll have no choice but to jump to a Framily plan. I would think Sprint would keep all the 2 year contract upgrades they possibly could but I guess not.

No, they want you to pay full price for a phone financed.

Carriers hate sudsidies and upgrades anyone that works in the cell world will tell you that. This month im making $1.50 for an upgrade on my commission, while a new line that signs the same contract and pays the same price will get me a commission of $8.68-$15.86 for each sale depending on what multiplier tier i finish at.

I think that makes it pretty obvious what carriers deem important.

And I understand companies want growth, it makes sense. But when you're dropping subs, it's just as important to keep existing subs as to gain new ones.

Not much different from now. You didn't own your phone the old way of 2-year contracts either unless you paid the early termination fee. Now you can choose to spend $650 upfront or break it down in 24 interest-free payments, and you still have to pay up what you owe.

No it won't, not really, where do you think the phones people trade in at the carriers go?

Question for the reps or others in the know... I know that there is overage charges if you go over the 1gb and not throttling (unfortunate) -- but is there a way to block overage charges AKA shut off the data when the 1gb has been reached?  I am thinking of trying to talk the MIL out of her expensive Verizon plan (with myself and her on it) and onto my family's plan (5 of us) for a total of the 7 needed for the $25/pp framily (and getting Nexus 5's when needed)... 1 gb each phone should be more than enough but I fear her or my sister (mostly them two) running up several GBs and ending up with a several hundred dollar bill or something...

Overages are $15 per gb. There is not an auto shut off but with your sprint.com preferences you can get data notifications and its easy to block data use on your sprint.com account.

Ahh, okay... So I can get an email if any of my lines get close, then shut the data down manually? That just might work.

    • Excuse my rookie comments here, but after enabling *#73#, it seems that the rainbow sim V2? requires n70 (I turned it off along with n71 - was hoping to track n66) to be available else it switches to T-Mobile.  So this confirms my suspicion that you need to be close to a site to get on Dish.  Have no idea why they don't just use plmn. To test, I put it into a s21 ultra, rebooted twice, came up on T-Mobile (no n70 on s21).  Tried to manually register on 313340, but it did not connect (tried twice). I am on factory unlocked firmware but used a s22 hack to get *#73# working.  Tried what you were suggesting with a T-Mobile sim partially installed, but that was very unstable with Dish ( I think they had figured that one out).  [edit: and now I see Boost sent me a successful device swap notice which says I can now begin to use my new device.  Sigh.  Will try again later and wait for this message - too impatient.]
    • Hopefully this indicates T-Mobile hasn't completely abandoned mmwave and/or small cells? But then again this is the loop, so take that as you will. Hopefully now that most macro activity is done (besides rural colo/builds), they will start working on small cells.
    • This has been approved.. https://www.cnet.com/tech/mobile/fcc-approves-t-mobiles-deal-to-purchase-mint-mobile/
    • In the conference call they had two question on additional spectrum. One was the 800 spectrum. They are not certain what will happen, thus have not really put it into their plans either way (sale or no sale). They do have a reserve level. Nationwide 800Mhz is seen as great for new technologies which I presume is IOT or 5g slices.  T-Mobile did not bite on use of their c-band or DOD.  mmWave rapidly approaching deadlines not mentioned at all. FWA brushes on this as it deals with underutilized spectrum on a sector by sector basis.  They are willing to take more money to allow FWA to be mobile (think RV or camping). Unsure if this represents a higher priority, for example, FWA Mobile in RVs in Walmart parking lots working where mobile phones need all the capacity. In terms of FWA capacity, their offload strategy is fiber through joint ventures where T-Mobile does the marketing, sales, and customer support while the fiber company does the network planning and installation.  50%-50% financial split not being consolidated into their books. I think discussion of other spectrum would have diluted the fiber joint venture discussion. They do have a fund which one use is to purchase new spectrum. Sale of the 800Mhz would go into this. It should be noted that they continue to buy 2.5Ghz spectrum from schools etc to replace leases. They will have a conference this fall  to update their overall strategies. Other notes from the call are 75% of the phones on the network are 5g. About 85% of their sites have n41, n25, and n71, 90% 5g.  93% of traffic is on midband.  SA is also adding to their performance advantage, which they figure is still ahead of other carriers by two years. It took two weeks to put the auction 108 spectrum to use at their existing sites. Mention was also made that their site spacing was designed for midrange thus no gaps in n41 coverage, while competitors was designed for lowband thus toggles back and forth for n77 also with its shorter range.
    • The manual network selection sounds like it isn't always scanning NR, hence Dish not showing up. Your easiest way to force Dish is going to be forcing the phone into NR-only mode (*#*#4636#*#* menu?), since rainbow sims don't support SA on T-Mobile.
