Say hello to the Framily (inexpensive but potentially confusing new Sprint group plan pricing)

For now any of the legacy plans including Everything Data will continue to honor 2 year contracts with the phone subsidy model.  However what AJ is referring to is that at some point in the future, maybe very soon in 2014 or it could be as far as 2015, Sprint could cut off allowing customers to re-upp their contracts with their legacy plans and phone subsidy model.  Sprint won't force you off of your legacy plan but if you want to upgrade your device (which you eventually will) the Framily plans might be the only plans available. Maybe Sprint won't even allow you to activate a device you buy off contract onto your Everything Data plans just to try to kick people off of the Everything Data plans.  I hope that is not the case but we can't predict the future.

I understand what and where AJ is coming from. Abuse needs to be curtailed. Whether he thinks 3-5 GB a month is abuse is can't say. When the time comes that is be necessary to switch plans I am fully prepared. But for now, the $60 a year I save in not switching can be used as my subsidy for when I do upgrade.

AJ has a few beefs with the cell phone industry but what I was eluding to in my post before is the belief that the phone subsidy model going the way of the dodo.  You are can already see the beginning steps already unfolding with the Framily plan that only has the Easy Pay method to pay for your devices.  What you are talking about in this post is his other beef which is people abusing unlimited mobile data which is an entirely different topic.

March 14th is the day ive heard thrown around. It is a friday which is the day sprint starts programs and lines up with current end dates of some promotions. Already in store there is no mention of 2 year pricing anywhere and that makes me believe it could happen sooner.

Wow that is a lot sooner than I expected.  But I guess with the introduction of Framily plans, you kinda already know which direction Sprint is heading towards.  I guess those that were thinking of waiting for the GS5/HTC One 2 probably would want to upgrade before the alleged March 14th date to lock in their Everything Data plans for at least another 2 years.

Wow! if everything said is true, my bill is going to go up a pretty significant amount. Doesnt look good for people who dont have a lot of phones.

Agreed, I have a 4 line family plan and I see no point in moving to a Framily plan as it currently stands. Getting less for more, outside of unlimited voice minutes which I hardly use any of.

Is there a 14 day window to a folks to your plan or can you add them at anytime?

People can be added at anytime to your framily but it has to be within the first 14 days of them joining sprint.

Ahhhhh. So theoretically, if somebody is off contract they can cancel their line then rejoin Sprint and be eligible to join a framily plan?

I'm interested to hear the thoughts of the members of this forum on the following question:

Is it "abuse" to band complete strangers into a framily plan?

I've had no problem recruiting some stranges + some family into my Framily plan which has more than halved my wireless bill with the following changes:

  • Changed from unlimited data to 1GB data
  • Changed from 750 minutes of talk to unlimited talk
  • No device subsidy (keeping existing handsets for a while, probably buying Nexus or Lennovorola phones going forward)

And even if you don't want to post your Framily ID on the various Forums to increase your Framily, don't you have access to Facebook, Twitter, G+, etc?  With very minimal effort, I have a 10 line framily and I suspect it will not be that hard for others either.  I also setup our phones to warn at 800MB and block data at 950MB which is very easy to do in Android.

What is band complete?

Hellz no it's not... not sure how it could be, just because they really aren't your "friend" shouldn't me squat to Sprint. Not, would I hang out at the Sprint store waiting for the first 6 people to come out and ask them to join my Framily, NOPE, that's a tad bit tacky (being at the Sprint store and all) but I don't see how it should/could/would make any difference.  If liability is tied to the bill, then there is no risk I can see by doing this anyhow.

Why did you ask?

Yeah, staff is already in the midst of discussing S4GRU's policy on Framily.  We might like to set up a Framily thread where members can form groups of 7-10 to get the greatest monthly discount per line.  Expect an official decision relatively soon.

+1.  I'm using the Ting MVNO right now with an iPhone 4S, but am looking for the 3GB of data.. so if I can hop on somewhere for $35/mo, that'd be awesome.

I ask because $25 per month is so damn  cheap I feel like it must be unethical somehow!

Rather than stand at the Sprint store, there are already online forums to list framily codes which I used to go from 3 lines up to 10 in a short matter of time.  Barring that I could have likely gained at least a few other members by posting on my FB and G+ pages.

Would I rather have all friends and family? Yes.  Would I rather have S4GRU members? Definitely.  But as a father of two and the only source of income to my house, I needed to jump on this right away.

I'm going to try again to get more. The framily I'm in is @4/$40/month so any new joins would get $35 or less. I guess I can put up with more rude replies.

DaQue, this is really not the best place to look because I'm betting 99% of the members here already have Sprint plans, and as we have learned existing Sprint subscribers cannot join with other existing Sprint subscribers.  You would have better luck hitting up social networks or non Sprint specific user forums.

Should S4GRU decide to create a Join a Framily forum, then that would be another option but that has not been decided yet (afaik).

Can someone please confirm that after switching to Framily, that I can add a corporate discount without agreeing to a contract. Chat says that is correct but the Sprint.com/verify still says i have to agree to a contract to get the discount.

What is the benefit to Sprint in bundling people in large groups?

Does it save money on their end in having 7-10 people in one account?

They don't even have them in one account. There could be 7 separate billings.

It's about giving customers to recruit more customers.  You save a little more on your bill when you bring in another customer, but not as much as Sprint is making by getting another customer.

Whats the difference between doing it this way rather than "get $10 off your bill every month by refering people!'  style offers?

Seems like if this is just a referal system, it would have been more work on their end changing their entire billing system to framily, vs "apply recurring discount"

    • Was true in my market. Likely means a higher percentage of 5g phones in your market.

    • Unable to confirm if it's really off but I noticed this morning that I'm no longer connecting to Band 41 on my home site. Switching my phone to LTE-only pretty much always put me on Band 41 since it was the least used band on T-Mobile's network. Now I'm only able to connect to Band 2/66. Not complaining because it means speeds are faster on LTE and maybe 150MHz n41 is around the corner.

    • Definite usage quirks in hunting down these sites with a rainbow sim in a s24 ultra. Fell into a hole yesterday so sent off to T-Mobile purgatory. Try my various techniques. No Dish. Get within binocular range of former Sprint colocation and can see Dish equipment. Try to manually set network and everybody but no Dish is listed.  Airplane mode, restart, turn on and off sim, still no Dish. Pull upto 200ft from site straight on with antenna.  Still no Dish. Get to manual network hunting again on phone, power off phone for two minutes. Finally see Dish in manual network selection and choose it. Great signal as expected. I still think the 15 minute rule might work but lack patience. (With Sprint years ago, while roaming on AT&T, the phone would check for Sprint about every fifteen minutes. So at highway speed you could get to about the third Sprint site before roaming would end). Using both cellmapper and signalcheck.net maps to hunt down these sites. Cellmapper response is almost immediate these days (was taking weeks many months ago).  Their idea of where a site can be is often many miles apart. Of course not the same dataset. Also different ideas as how to label a site, but sector details can match with enough data (mimo makes this hard with its many sectors). Dish was using county spacing in a flat suburban area, but is now denser in a hilly richer suburban area.  Likely density of customers makes no difference as a poorer urban area with likely more Dish customers still has country spacing of sites.
