Say hello to the Framily (inexpensive but potentially confusing new Sprint group plan pricing)

Question for the reps or others in the know... I know that there is overage charges if you go over the 1gb and not throttling (unfortunate) -- but is there a way to block overage charges AKA shut off the data when the 1gb has been reached?  I am thinking of trying to talk the MIL out of her expensive Verizon plan (with myself and her on it) and onto my family's plan (5 of us) for a total of the 7 needed for the $25/pp framily (and getting Nexus 5's when needed)... 1 gb each phone should be more than enough but I fear her or my sister (mostly them two) running up several GBs and ending up with a several hundred dollar bill or something...

Isn't it possible on the phone (at least some phones)? I think I saw a set mobile data limit option under data usage on my phone.

Yes most androids now have that feature but it warns that is just an estimate and may be different than the carriers data usuge numbers.

There is no mention of 2 year prices anywhere in sprint stores now. I cant speak for all of sprint but in my retail area (ohio kentucky indiana) we cant do a contract with out a manager talking to customer and approving it. Its the next step towards no subsidies.

Below is a picture for all those saying subsidies aren't going anywhere.Posted Image

they way it was explained to me was that it will show the $55 per line but then when you get your bill each line will have a credit on it that would make it go down to whatever pricing for the number of lines you have. so at the max you would see a $30 credit to bring you to the $25 per line.

Has anyone seen their $55 go down on sprint.com? Mine still shows $55 per line.

Well i love the fact i have a opt out clause in my contract with sprint lol. my 2 lines that i wanted to get rid of they talked me into keeping them with 2 tab 3's and 5$ per month on each for the stupid 25 megs of data. I told them about the subsidy's going away and she was so sure it would never happen in full that she noted my account that if they do away with them i can opt out free of my 2 5$ plans and keep my Tabs :)

1 question. I have the phone on wifi and data turned off BUT 25 Megs is what? i mean how much internet get used when you check your e-mail or look up a phone number if you are on data? i know it can vary on how good a connection you have but i was just wondering is the 25 Megs used up in 1 check of a e-mail or what?

I also called back and had them check my account and to make sure the account services Manager did note the account and it is noted lol

Lucky you did that.

25 megs is a few pictures depending on the resolution.

It would seem Sprint would rather keep a customer than loose one to Ting for 45 days. I will know for sure when I get the correct framily number from Jo at work. Sprint rep wrote it down wrong.

This is part of the problem with "unlimited" data.  It absolves people from understanding and taking responsibility for the extent of their actual usage.

Checking e-mail once should not consume 25 MB -- unless you are also downloading quite a few attachments.  If anything, a typical refresh of e-mail should consume less than 1 MB.

Knowledge is key...

Ok so can someone clarify if you add the unlimited data to this plan you can get a subsidized phone and trade it in for another once a year?

There is no subsidies. After 12 payments out off the 24 you can give back the phone and stop paying on it. Then you start paying on a new phone.

Subsidies will be gone by mid march but from the way things are going i wouldn't be surprised if it was sooner than what they have been telling us.

If you pay the phone financing off before those 12 months, can you keep your old phone when upgrading?

Is there an additional charge or is it covered by the 20$ unlimited up charge?

I personally think the Framily plan at all levels should be reduced by $5 to compete directly with Tmobile.  The Framily plan with 1 line should be $70 ($50 + $20 unlimited) and at 7 lines should be $20/line.  Right now the prices are still not low enough to get my family members on Sprint to sign up for the Framily plan.

If Sprint wants to stop the bleeding on customers they have to directly compete or undercut Tmobile's Simple Choice plan prices and with the Framily plan it is still more expensive than them.

Sprint has much broader 3G/4G native and roaming coverage than T-Mobile does.  Plus, Sprint offers much larger monthly roaming allotments than T-Mobile does.  I realize that most users do not fully appreciate that.  But those advantages cost Sprint money, though they arguably make Sprint the better value.

Does Sprints plan include tethering? That is what makes the T-Mobile plan somewhat attractive. If Sprint was to counter it and allow 2gb of tethering a month for unlimited, it'd be pretty awesome.

I don't think the Framily plan includes free tethering.  The Tmobile Simple Choice plan if you select the Unlimited data option includes up to 2.5 GB mobile hotspot service.  Its a nice perk to have but I think overall better LTE coverage is more important.

I am more interested in the tethering capabilities for the 1 GB and 3 GB tiered data options.  Those should be free and clear -- pardon the pun -- to use any or all data for tethering.  But I do not recall seeing a conclusive answer.

"Unlimited" data is the sticky wicket.  If included tethering is allowed at all, a courtesy tethering allotment -- à la T-Mobile -- would be necessary.  Otherwise, a free for all would just invite abuse.

Tethering is not included with out adding it to the line. Its 1gb for 10, 2 for 20, 6 for 50 and is a completely separate data bucket then the phones data allotment.

Ah, that is a miscue because tiered data should be usable for any and all purposes.  It does not pose much of a problem for me, as I add tethering on a pro rata basis only a few times per year.  But, hopefully, this is an APN technical issue that gets sorted out in due time.  Tethering on "unlimited" data needs to be controlled; tethering on tiered allotments should be unrestricted.

That's the part that gets me.. It's like doing a voluntary repo so you can get into debt again with another. Is there any penalty for paying it off, keeping your equity, and getting another?

No you can buy outright or pay off at any time. The monthly payments or trading in is completely optional.

    • Was true in my market. Likely means a higher percentage of 5g phones in your market.

    • Unable to confirm if it's really off but I noticed this morning that I'm no longer connecting to Band 41 on my home site. Switching my phone to LTE-only pretty much always put me on Band 41 since it was the least used band on T-Mobile's network. Now I'm only able to connect to Band 2/66. Not complaining because it means speeds are faster on LTE and maybe 150MHz n41 is around the corner.

    • Definite usage quirks in hunting down these sites with a rainbow sim in a s24 ultra. Fell into a hole yesterday so sent off to T-Mobile purgatory. Try my various techniques. No Dish. Get within binocular range of former Sprint colocation and can see Dish equipment. Try to manually set network and everybody but no Dish is listed.  Airplane mode, restart, turn on and off sim, still no Dish. Pull upto 200ft from site straight on with antenna.  Still no Dish. Get to manual network hunting again on phone, power off phone for two minutes. Finally see Dish in manual network selection and choose it. Great signal as expected. I still think the 15 minute rule might work but lack patience. (With Sprint years ago, while roaming on AT&T, the phone would check for Sprint about every fifteen minutes. So at highway speed you could get to about the third Sprint site before roaming would end). Using both cellmapper and signalcheck.net maps to hunt down these sites. Cellmapper response is almost immediate these days (was taking weeks many months ago).  Their idea of where a site can be is often many miles apart. Of course not the same dataset. Also different ideas as how to label a site, but sector details can match with enough data (mimo makes this hard with its many sectors). Dish was using county spacing in a flat suburban area, but is now denser in a hilly richer suburban area.  Likely density of customers makes no difference as a poorer urban area with likely more Dish customers still has country spacing of sites.
