Network Vision/LTE - Tampa Market

The building just south of the 275/Dale Mabry intersection has new panels on it. It might be live or testing.

I glanced nearby when I had the strong signal and the panels on the building were the only close ones I could see with such a strong signal so I think you're right.

More network issues at work...

A few weeks ago I was bouncing between EVDO and 1x, both really slow. Today on my break, I noticed I was on 1x. As I browsed the web, I got kicked off complete and am now roaming in 1x. Like before, I'm hoping this just means I'm one step closer to LTE at work.

Near I-75 and Woodberry in Brandon.

There are 2 towers in that area, Woodberry and Faulkenburg and one at the Brandon Mall. Both as of 2 weeks ago had no work done to them yet so it might be a while. The Brandon Mall area has been notorious for years with bad data and dropped calls especially when the area is crowded.

I retrospect, this is likely what happened. Strangely enough, I was back on EVDO not two minutes later. Maybe is congestion and tower work? (Still keeping fingers crossed.)

TD-LTE in Tampa? Too bad no devices to find it with at the moment.

Edit: Not sure that link works. But it's in the Clearwire LTE, post 123.

I received an email from a source that says Sprint/Clearwire (Sprintwire?) are turning on TD-LTE 2600 today in a few markets over the legacy Clearwire network. He specifically named LA, NYC and Tampa. But there are others too. If I find out the other markets, I'll let you know. But there will probably be a press release soon. Time to get those triband hotspots! Where's the triband smartphones? Robert from Note 2 using Tapatalk 4 Beta

That's awesome!  Surprised Tampa is going to be one of the first TD-LTE markets.

I just read an article about td-lte and Sprint. Long story short it stated clearwire could theoretically use its 40 hrz band to get speeds of 168 mbps down. How realistic is this?

IF they are able to deploy the proper channels, and IF they can get the proper backhaul, sure.

On another note, on my last couple of passes to and from work I've had a strong lte signal on 275 at Dale Mabry (in the -60s.

That's the tower closest to my office, and yes, it's finally upgraded! Just ran a speed test, and got 14 down. 7 up. I can deal with that.

So I was in the USF area this weekend had good LTE coverage average speeds were around 4Mbps and that is plenty for me... But even so Sprint still lags behind Verizon and AT&T, 2 friends that were with me, one had AT&T and the other had verizon.  we all had Note II's they got on average 14-15 Mbps.  do I need that much speed?  not really. 4Mbps is plenty. but I still have speed envy  :P

I noticed a crane with a working platform on it at the "flag pole" on 54 near the Suncoast.  They had it all buttoned up and all exterior panels were reinstalled about 2 months ago, after a log time of them working on it.  Don't think I ever got an LTE signal from it though during that time.

Yeah coverage up is pretty solid. Once they grade the tower on the Veterans Hospital it'll be hard to not find a signal up here. Speed wise its been adequate for me as well, but its not winning any races either. Have a friend who uses a T-Mobile HSPA+42 device and it will consistently smoke my speeds.

Saw a crew up the tower on 56th and Fletcher.  Also, saw a crew up BB Downs in New Tampa.  Wasn't sure where exactly... was helping a friend move and wasn't too familiar with the area.

I didn't know that was a sprint tower. Where they doing cabinet work or RUU?

Still no LTE in downtown Tampa even though one of the towers has been marked 4G for months now. I do get a signal sometimes but the data is not usable.

I know, I drive through there every day. I'm guessing human resources are spread thin to activate our a backhaul issue. I've seen plenty of towers out there nite with panels for months and nothing out of them yet. I map through there every day.

Gibsonton area update - I took US41 home today, usually do at least once a week, and the tower at Ohio St. & US41 is now broadcasting LTE.  I drove down the street while mapping, stopped at the base of the tower, turned around and headed back south on US41.  When I have time I will map some more but the roads back where the tower are at are not in the greatest of shape.  This tower is located just east of US-41 between Big Bend Rd. and Symmes Rd.

The tower just north of Fletcher on I-75 is live. It is a GMO, the first I've seen in Hillsborough County because it shares the same pole as powerlines.

I'll have to check that out as I have never seen one of those before.

    • I've now seen how things work in Kobe, Hiroshima, and Osaka, as well as some areas south of Osaka (e.g. Wakayama, Kinokawa), and tried three more SIMs. The two physical SIMs (different branding for each) both use IIJ, which provides a Japanese IP address/routing on NTT, aleit LTE-only, so latency is ~45ms to Tokyo. The catch with NTT is that it uses two frequency bands (B42/3500 MHz LTE, n79/4900 MHz NR) that you're not going to get on an Android sold in the US, and I'm guessing that B42 would be helpful speed-wise on that network, as it doesn't have B41. I also found one place that doesn't have cell service: a vending machine in the back of the Osaka Castle tower. Or, rather, the B8/18/19 signal is weak enough there to be unusable. Going back to 5G for a moment, I saw a fair amount of Softbank n257 in Hiroshima, as well as in some train stations between Osaka and Kobe. 4x100 MHz bandwidth, anchored by B1/3/8, with speeds sometimes exceeding 400 Mbps on the US Mobile roaming eSIM. Not quite the speeds I've seen on mmW in the States, but I've probably been on mmW for more time over the past few days than I have in the US over the past year, so I'll take it. My fastest speed test was actually on SoftBank n77 though, with 100 MHz of that plus 10x10 B8 hitting ~700 Mbps down and ~80 Mbps up with ~100ms latency...on the roaming eSIM...on the 4th floor of the hotel near Shin-Kobe station. Guessing B8 was a DAS or small cell based on signal levels, and the n77 might have been (or was just a less-used sector of the site serving the train station). I'm now 99% sure that all three providers are running DSS on band 28, and I've seen 10x10 on similar frequencies from both NTT and SoftBank IIRC, on both LTE and 5G. I also picked up one more eSIM: my1010, which is different from 1010/csl used by US Mobile's eSIM unfortunately, as it's LTE-only. On the bright side, it's cheap (10GB/7 days is like $11, and 20GB for the same period would be around $15), and can use both KDDI and SoftBank LTE. It also egresses from Taiwan (Chunghwa Telecom), though latency isn't really any better than the Singapore based eSIMs. Tomorrow will include the most rural part of our journey, so we'll see how networks hold up there, and from tomorrow night on we'll be in Tokyo, so any further reports after that will be Tokyo-centric.
    • I think the push for them is adding US Mobile as a MVNO with a priority data plan.  Ultimately, making people more aware of priority would allow them (and other carriers) to differentiate themselves from MVNOs like Consumer Cellular that advertise the same coverage. n77 has dramatically reduced the need for priority service at Verizon where the mere functioning of your phone was in jeopardy a couple of years ago if you had a low priority plan like Red Pocket. Only have heard of problems with T-Mobile in parts of Los Angeles. AT&T fell in between. All had issues at large concerts and festivals, or sporting events if your carrier has no on-site rights. Edit: Dishes native 5g network has different issues: not enough sites, limited bandwidth. Higher priority would help a few. Truth is they can push phones to AT&T or T-Mobile.
    • Tracfone AT&T sims went from QCI 8 to 9 as well a couple years ago. I'm pretty neutral towards AT&T's turbo feature here, the only bad taste left was for those who had unadvertised QCI 7 a couple months ago moved down to 8. In my eyes it would have been a lot better for AT&T to include turbo in those Premium/Elite plans for free to keep them at QCI 7, while also introducing this turbo add on option for any other plans or devices. As it stands now only a handful of plans can add it, and only if you're using a device on a random list of devices AT&T considers to be 5G smartphones.
    • My Red Pocket AT&T GSMA account was dropped to QCI 9 about a year ago.  Most recently 8 for the last few years prior.  Voice remains at 5.
