Network Vision/LTE - San Diego Market

does that mean that the evo 3d cant ever have 4g?

Maybe if you visit La Jolla, or one of the other areas which support WiMax...

wimax (your phone) is not the same 4g (LTE) which is being added to San Diego currently.

:)

Hi Chris,

Like booker said, the EVO 3D supports 4G WiMax, not 4G LTE. WiMax and LTE are two different technologies, and Sprint is only moving forward with LTE.

That said, there is some WiMax coverage in San Diego: http://www.sensorly.com/map/WIMAX/US/USA/Sprint/wimax_310sprint

I'm not sure if that coverage is active and available.

have a great weekend,

john

My Galaxy Nexus didn't pick them up, but my wife's GSIII got one of them.

I borrowed my wife to do a little more mapping in Spring Valley with her GSIII. Definitely a bigger footprint today:

For whatever reason my GNex hardly registers LTE in this part of the county; SignalStrength Pro shows -95dbm for RSRP and -20dbm for RSRQ and I can't get an LTE connection nor can Sensorly see it. On the other hand my wife's GSIII grabs a 4G connection and maps it in Sensorly.

I don't know if it's the difference between the Samsung CMC221 in the GNex and the Qualcomm MSM8960 dual-core with built-in LTE, or if my particular GNex just sucks wind :-(

hi jsage, i have a galaxy nexus also, and have not seen 4g on it at all ,,, did you have both units together to test or not ?

Hi Gary,

Yes, they were side by side in the car. My wife's SGIII doesn't have the SignalStrength app installed, so perhaps I'll put the lite version on it and try again tomorrow. We're going to be driving through that area in the evening.

On the other hand I've been picking up 4G signal as I drive through various areas of the county. And in January I had great 4G service in Washington DC and in San Juan, PR.

have fun,

john

I believe the Galaxy Nexus is a Wimax device on Sprint's network but could be mistaken.

*edit*

It was a different Nexus device I was thinking of.

Have you tried toggling the network mode to CDMA/Evdo then back to CDMA/LTE? Sometimes I need to do that on my GN to kick start my connection to LTE.

Good morning,

I haven't tried that, I'll do it tonight when I'm in that area. Thanks for the tip!

have a great day,

john

Just briefly picked up 4g on Mira Mesa Blvd by Fresh and Easy. Mapped 10 points on sensorly. Its starting to spread pretty quickly. Its a much better experience using my EVO on LTE that's for sure. Its fast like its supposed to be. Cant wait B-)

The Faraday cluster is getting annoying. Every day, I come in to work and have 4G. Then, late in the morning, it reverts to 3G. This would be fine, except that the 3G is so slow, that I can't even perform a speed test.

As you can see in the graphical analysis below there is a Faraday cage over my whole neighborhood repelling LTE signals from advancing into my house. At least I'll be safe from an EMP strike. Actually, I wasn't able to pick up any LTE anywhere near my house this weekend. And, those two little blobs just to the east I have never picked up. Maybe they're anomalies, glitches in the Matrix, or something?

Those 2 lte spots are real, I have picked them up. Go down to the lake, park near the baseball fields, I get lte there.

gojosergo,

Toggling network mode did the trick. I was able to map in the existing area, and then picked up more LTE just a few blocks away. The terrain is pretty hilly, so I was surprised at how far the coverage extended. Of course, it might be more than one tower :-)

I did the speed test right near the corner of Lamar & Bancroft. I was there for a few hours and enjoyed the LTE.

One interesting thing, regarding Network Mode toggling. I switched from JB 4.2.1 to CM10.1 (Android 4.2.2 AOSP) on Sunday. Network Mode has an extra setting in addition to CDMA/EvDo auto and LTE/CDMA - LTE/CDMA/EvDo. Just for kicks I tried switching to the new mode, but it immediately switches back to LTE/CDMA. I'll have to check the APN settings and see if there is a setting for this new mode.

thanks again,

john

I can Confirm LTE at corner of Pomerado/Poway Rd. its not as strong (more distance from corner) as sensorly shows when I have tested, but then again I work late shift. coming up Pomerado, it stops after first block. Remember, we are in Pre-Launch... basically beta testers, so coverage will come and go.

Anybody confirm LTE down in Scripps/Poway area?

On Mission between Bennett and Woodland in San Marcos. Seeing "LTE" on my phone, easily the highlight of my day. So fast.

Anyone getting many drop calls between the hand off of 2 NV completed 3G sites? Every time I am on a call traveling from site * to site *, I would drop calls. Called Sprint and they said they couldn't recreate the problem. How can these sites be accepted by Sprint, but are having problems? I had called 800-268-0796 and explained to them these are sites that Sprint had accepted as completed for 3G and are having problems. Can it just be only my phone? I don't have drop calls at any other locations.
