I'm right there with you...I was up to a BLAZING .29 Mbps right after 3G became available...now we're back below .1 Mbps. At least the ping times aren't >500ms anymore!

But to be honest, I am happy if I can get web pages to load on my phone.

Yeah, I hear ya...my service is just one step above non-functioning. I did get Sprint to send me an Airave for my house where I got absolutely no voice coverage so that's something. And I'm really hoping LTE at least helps on the data side (obviously wifi works for data at home...). I'd be happy with "normal" 3G speeds once the conversion to LTE happens, using my phone is somewhat painful at this point.

Airave is pretty much using your DSL or Broadband connection instead of their network.

It boosts, but at times it interferes with certain signals.

I suggest, unplug airave and see how the connection is.

Ah, I've done the whole dance...opened up tickets for outages, etc...would only get 1 bar in my house max. It would sometimes roam onto Verizon, but drop my call when it switched. Same behavior with my old phone (HTC Evo) and my current two phones (iPhone 5's) :-/

Where do you live? Which part?

i suggest get Samsung Galaxy s3 or HTC ONE X. They get pretty good signals.

Art Museum Area/Fairmount. My buddy has an S3 and ususally gets 2 bars in my house, which is better but not good enough for the cost of switching my phones over! haha

Sprint "quietly" launched lte in parts of San Fran, NYC and DC today, if you look at the maps on sensorly the areas are covered pretty well. Hopefully this is an indicator Philadelphia is right around the corner, and the coverage will be just as good!

The areas in SF, NYC and DC have been live for months. We've been talking about them for some time on this site. Sprint last fall acknowledged that they would be leaving sites online once they were finished instead of waiting for the whole area to be complete.

I apologize, I just read this:

Not sure why this article was just posted today, although there is no mention of any date those sites went live. Cnet is just behind I suppose.

Yeah, that information isn't quite accurate. An official launch is at best 1-2 months away for any of DC, NYC or SF.

Sprint just decided to go on record today about LTE being available in those cities.

If you look in this post: http://s4gru.com/index.php?/topic/3101-map-of-current-and-coming-soon-sprint-lte-cities/

You can see the cities that Sprint has announced as receiving LTE soon, and which of those cities already have LTE being broadcast in some areas.

I have saw that article somewhere weeks ago. I think it was one NYTIMES weeks ago.

Cnet wasn't the only site that reported it, that's what I found so strange about.

I found CNET is not so up to date. I like NYTIMES, CNN , GOOGLE NEWS and YAHOO NEWS combined.

You really have to read all these different sites...

At least thats what I do each day.

That's what I have been doing, that was my point, cnet wasn't the only site that posted that, it was just the link I used.

It wasn't news. Nothing new happened that was worth reporting. LTE service started going live months ago in those cities, and the service has grown from there, and continues to grow. Nothing happened in the past few days that is worthy of reporting.

It's kind of like posting an article now that says Obama won the election.

So I take it nothing's cookin in Philly? I was hoping we'd see something now that a few sites had been accepted...a pre-launch status with occasional LTE or something...

There are several sites with LTE accepted, it's just a matter of when they are turned on now.

Upgrades are still continuing, and at a better pace than they were earlier.

Yeah, that "just turning it on" seems to be the sticky bit. It's great they've been accepted, but until they turn the things on they might as well be 1xRTT lol

Just had yet another experience of someone asking me for directions saying her phone wasn't working. My phone was showing 5 bars and a 3G indicator but wouldn't pull back data no matter which app I tried. I asked the girl to pull out her phone; it was a brand new looking EVO 4G, on Sprint, full bars, 3G indicator. Wouldn't pull back data no matter what app we tried. Eventually she went to ask a doorperson in the lobby of a nearby building.

This is not really acceptable for being downtown in the 5th largest metropolitan area in the US...so I wish they'd "just turn it on".

Not trying to rant, but seriously Sprint service is nearly unusable in Center City...if I were Sprint I'd be giving such a poorly served large market a disproportionate amount of attention.

Allentown had a data outage from Friday night through Sunday morning to follow the above posts. It appeared the entire cluster in Allentown proper was down.

I live in the Allentown suburbs right by Salisbury HIgh School and I didn't experience any data outages.

    • Was at the Yankees vs Tigers game today and besides being a terrible day to have good seats, T-Mobile had great speeds via the stadium's DAS. I consistently saw 500-600Mbps on 5G and on LTE I got upwards of 200Mbps. I noticed that the stadiums DAS is broadcasting 140MHz n41 while macros that surround the stadium are at 80MHz.

    • I've now seen how things work in Kobe, Hiroshima, and Osaka, as well as some areas south of Osaka (e.g. Wakayama, Kinokawa), and tried three more SIMs. The two physical SIMs (different branding for each) both use IIJ, which provides a Japanese IP address/routing on NTT, aleit LTE-only, so latency is ~45ms to Tokyo. The catch with NTT is that it uses two frequency bands (B42/3500 MHz LTE, n79/4900 MHz NR) that you're not going to get on an Android sold in the US, and I'm guessing that B42 would be helpful speed-wise on that network, as it doesn't have B41. I also found one place that doesn't have cell service: a vending machine in the back of the Osaka Castle tower. Or, rather, the B8/18/19 signal is weak enough there to be unusable. Going back to 5G for a moment, I saw a fair amount of Softbank n257 in Hiroshima, as well as in some train stations between Osaka and Kobe. 4x100 MHz bandwidth, anchored by B1/3/8, with speeds sometimes exceeding 400 Mbps on the US Mobile roaming eSIM. Not quite the speeds I've seen on mmW in the States, but I've probably been on mmW for more time over the past few days than I have in the US over the past year, so I'll take it. My fastest speed test was actually on SoftBank n77 though, with 100 MHz of that plus 10x10 B8 hitting ~700 Mbps down and ~80 Mbps up with ~100ms latency...on the roaming eSIM...on the 4th floor of the hotel near Shin-Kobe station. Guessing B8 was a DAS or small cell based on signal levels, and the n77 might have been (or was just a less-used sector of the site serving the train station). I'm now 99% sure that all three providers are running DSS on band 28, and I've seen 10x10 on similar frequencies from both NTT and SoftBank IIRC, on both LTE and 5G. I also picked up one more eSIM: my1010, which is different from 1010/csl used by US Mobile's eSIM unfortunately, as it's LTE-only. On the bright side, it's cheap (10GB/7 days is like $11, and 20GB for the same period would be around $15), and can use both KDDI and SoftBank LTE. It also egresses from Taiwan (Chunghwa Telecom), though latency isn't really any better than the Singapore based eSIMs. Tomorrow will include the most rural part of our journey, so we'll see how networks hold up there, and from tomorrow night on we'll be in Tokyo, so any further reports after that will be Tokyo-centric.
    • I think the push for them is adding US Mobile as a MVNO with a priority data plan.  Ultimately, making people more aware of priority would allow them (and other carriers) to differentiate themselves from MVNOs like Consumer Cellular that advertise the same coverage. n77 has dramatically reduced the need for priority service at Verizon where the mere functioning of your phone was in jeopardy a couple of years ago if you had a low priority plan like Red Pocket. Only have heard of problems with T-Mobile in parts of Los Angeles. AT&T fell in between. All had issues at large concerts and festivals, or sporting events if your carrier has no on-site rights. Edit: Dishes native 5g network has different issues: not enough sites, limited bandwidth. Higher priority would help a few. Truth is they can push phones to AT&T or T-Mobile.
