HTC EVO lte connection issues

I've wondered about this too? I don't think Robert or anyone else has ever said whether they thought that the EVO LTE could be "fixed"? Do you think it is an antenna issue that can be fixed or software issue? It scares me really as my area doesn't have LTE but will soon. I don't want to have these issues or I'll be spending every day at my local Sprint store. :(

You can switch the EVO LTE into LTE,CDMA mode which will obtain LTE and hold it for much longer. That setting works great. Only downside is if you happen to get out of LTE range, you'll be on 1X. Just switch the mode back and you'll be on 3G.

 

So basically HTC just needs to resolve the threshold issue with a software update. I don't think it is an antenna issue since we can force LTE and it work just fine.

Wow! I think I would have lost it too after laughing and asking where the camera crew was at.

You did good 2k4mach! You need to send a friend in to record and ask the same question and then send it to Sprint and upload it on YouTube. Reps in the stores, best buy, etc really don't know anything about tech in general. I always cringe when I hear someone say, "The guy at Best Buy said I needed to get..." LOL FACEPALM!

 

i really need to just have a camera crew follow me around all the time. i always seem to find these type of people around town all the time.

Whats interesting is that this has been a known issue since April accoring to Robert. The EVO has been on the shelves since May for pre-orders and June in store I believe. Since release it has had possibly 2 software updates, maybe 3? It is now 6 months after launch and 3 months since the initial markets fired up LTE and still no fix?. Updating Sense was more important than this issue?

 

Why does Sprint continue to act like they are a first time business owners? Maybe the amount of EVO LTEs sold does not warrant them to be proactive in this situation. It doesn't seem to make sense for them to wait for the Jelly Bean update unless there was only a few thousand or so in the wild right? Wish I could get over the build quality of the SG3

What I found that helped me out was when I was in a LTE area north of Laurel, Md last week. I updated my profile while on LTE in which now when I go thru a LTE area, I have no problems with the phone finding and getting on 4G.

I'm in Houston, and my EVO picks up LTE on its own on a regular basis. The EVO has a file in its engineering screen called LTE Record, which looks like a list of towers that has connected to LTE previously. This might be the reason why it switches to LTE in areas where it has previously connected to LTE.

 

The issue with the lower threshold it would seem, is the EVO switches back to 3g too soon even when the 4g signal is still usable. This will have more of an effect indoors. Where a weak 4g signal might only get you 2-4mb/s download, that still blows away a strong 3g signal.

It is NOT a threshold issue. We have been saying that for months now. As digiblur said:

If it isn't a threshold issue, then what would need to be adjusted? From what I've seen the EVO LTE will only hold signal up to a certain point to which then it will switch back to 3G. Even though the LTE signal was weaker, it still could have performed better than the 3G it just switched to.

 

If that threshold of preferring a stronger 3G signal over a weaker (but better performing LTE signal vs 3G performance) isn't the problem... what is?

That is what we in the business call, the question. None of us here know what the problem is. This is all just speculation on the part of some and educated guesses based on extensive testing on the part of others. As Robert said earlier, all of the recently released LTE devices for Sprint had threshold issues which were fixed with OTA updates. The fact that the EVO hasn't been fixed yet, combined with the known LTE connectivity issues from when the device was still in the lab would lead one to deduce that it is more than a simple threshold adjustment problem.

I understand that. I'm sure there is more to it than just a simple threshold adjustment. I guess what I find odd is one can switch to LTE,CDMA mode and hold LTE just fine, even at weak signals and work just fine. Only problem is when you go out of LTE, you are stuck on 1x. If they could just mimic that but have it default to 3G when out of LTE range, problem solved. But things can never be that easy :)

Are you comparing LTE connectivity with another LTE device side by side? That's what digiblur and others are saying. You may be thinking that it is working fine but when you see where other LTE devices are getting strong connections and the EVO is not getting any connection at all then you see the extent of the issue. I have seen several users here report that their EVO is unable to connect to LTE no matter what they do in areas where other devices are connecting without issue.

I haven't compared side by side yet with a GS3 or iPhone 5. But what I have done is change the Preferred Network Type under the *#*#4636#*#* dialer menu. Normal setting is "CDMA + LTE/EvDo Auto" and the setting I've tested with is "LTE,CDMA". That will force the phone to LTE and fallback on 1x when out of range. Comparing those two settings, when using "LTE,CDMA" I can attain LTE quicker and hold on to LTE much longer than the "CDMA +LTE/EvDo Auto" setting.

 

Before I was aware of this setting, I would have been one of those oblivious to the issue. But after changing that setting it is like night and day. Comparing the EVO LTE in the "LTE,CDMA" setting to a GS3/iPhone 5 is on my to-do list.

From what I've been reading, there's also a scan time issue where the Evo isn't scanning for a signal often enough. I think it was on this forum where someone mentioned they sat in range of a tower and the phone took a good 20 minutes to connect to LTE on it's own.

 

Once some towers go live near in LA, I'll be testing it out with my phone and my wife's Galaxy Nexus.

 

Hopefully whatever Sprint store I go to, doesn't give me the same "your phone isn't LTE capable" line, when I bring the issue up.

I don't think I will use that dialing code you speak of... Changing a setting in there ruined my roaming on 850 and I had to hard reset and re provision to get it back. I would use the ##data# one. Seems to be the same

What setting did you change or change it to? So far I haven't had any repercussions using that setting. The only thing I've tried is "LTE,CDMA" though. No issues roaming as well.

 

Edit - Like you said, they are the same. When I change to "LTE,CDMA" in the *#*#4636#*#* menu and look under ##3282#, the preferred mode has changed to "LTE CDMA only". *#*#4636#*#* might be a better option for people who aren't rooted and don't know their MSL and as long as they don't mess with any other settings.

There was a band setting in there. It brought back flashbacks of a phone that wouldn't roam! Very bad in my area since I roam quite a bit in the capital city.

it's that C64 he uses. Sometimes it hiccups and posts multiple times. When you use vintage hardware you have to expect things like that sometimes.

Since I decided to send back the SGIII I've been forcing the EvoLTE into CDMA/LTE only mode from the ##DATA# menu. I also went into the LTE record and increased the LTE scan timer to 60. Thus far my 4G coverage has been great! Every bit as prevalent as it was with the SGIII.

 

The only drawback is when you leave a 4G coverage area you're stuck on 1xRTT but thats a small price to pay when even a weak 4GLTE signal gives me 2Mbps speeds. This workaround will do until Sprint/HTC fixes things.

Agreed. I'm waiting for my father to get back from vacation so I can test side by side with his GS3. But so far I have noticed a huge improvement when using the LTE,CDMA mode versus normal settings.
