It may be restating the obvious, but there’s a strong financial incentive for this merger to go through for a number of folks.

Aside from being against the merger because it will permanently reduce competition in the market, part of me wants the merger to fail and Masa to be stuck holding the bag on Sprint, not just out of spite, but because I don’t want him to have an easy exit due to his mismanagement of Sprint.

This may force him to. Although, they will try to get in bed with someone else, it will be a lot harder to create another deal with someone else. Dish doesn’t have the resources to make this work.

I still think the Merger will pass. The FCC has given it a yes. In history the DOJ has never gone against the FCC. If they did that would be waters never gone to before.

Which is true, but going from 4 to 3 has always been received negatively, but if these reports are true of that kind of concessions that Makan Delrahim is supposed to announce anyday. No way they accept this

 

According to Bloomberg, the Justice Department disagrees with those who say that a combined T-Mobile-Sprint would be a tougher competitor for the nation's two top wireless carriers, Verizon and AT&T. That argument doesn't seem to hold much water with DOJ antitrust chief Makan Delrahim, who will reportedly demand that both T-Mobile and Sprint help create a new carrier that would keep the number of major providers at four

Hell no, there is a player right now with lots of spectrum, Dish. They better force them to either deploy their spectrum or sell it.

Still though I think dish needs to cough up all that spectrum. They've done nothing with it.

Maybe that's the winning ticket?  Have Dish come on board with their spectrum and then let New T Mob build it out while giving excellent terms to Dish so they become a sort of 4th carrier?   

I agree with both Dan and Snake... Dish is sitting on and wasting a huge amount of spectrum.   Better to put it to use!

I would not be opposed to that. Heck. I would not be opposed to Dish also buying Boost so that at least they start with some customers.

Dish's band 70 would probably require new RRH's so Dish would need to pay some money to deploy that spectrum. But the AWS-3 and 600Mhz can be hosted right away with no fuss or muss.

I also think the B29 Dish would likely end up with att as it's only 5x0 and makes no since for anyone else. Unless New TMO wants a Extra 5x0. For att visit would allow them to go from 5x0 to 10x0.

That would probably be a good idea. That would be a nice chunk of spectrum for AT&T in the 700Mhz Band.

And let's not pretend that 5G was the reason Sprint didn't deploy their entire 2.5-2.6 GHz spectrum. It was a wasted opportunity at showing amazing DL speeds during the 4G era.

ENDC only allows for seamless handoffs between the 5G and LTE network right now so I'm confused by your comment. Sprint would still need to move half of their spectrum over to 5G from LTE.

If Sprint could use all 120MHz for 5G and still have people able to use LTE on that same 120MHz at the same time, don't you think they'd be doing that right now? Instead they're using 60MHz for 5G and 60MHz for LTE until they get enough people on 5G for them to move the rest from LTE or implement DSS.

Yeah the spectrum will have to be split manually between 5G and 4G in the beginning until DSS is fully implemented and the two technologies would have to share the Massive MIMO antennas.

They could be switching MVNO agreement. Or they will become a regional carrier and use MVNO agreement as the basis for roaming.

I feel like an existing regional player should be a better 4th carrier, if they get the divested spectrum, network gear and a good wholesale roaming deal. I think DOJ should better get TMO/S to agree on on a network sharing/mvno/roaming deal open to all regional players than manufacture a 4th player.

I do hope FCC is going to enforced the deadline and hand the spectrum to whoever really want to be a carrier. I doubts the current FCC will do that.
