Sprint updated their coverage map today. It looks like the public map is now displaying 5G coverage!

I see the 5G icon, but zooming into Chicago loop or Washington DC on the mall only shows 4G, even with the v50 selected.

Take a look at the official four launch cities. 5G coverage is displayed there.

Chicago - fail.  Will check Atlanta, Dallas and Kansas City.

The other three do have it, although it is Overland Park more than Kansas City.

Sprint updated the 5G network performance page:

Quote

5G network*: Expect to experience download speeds of 115-255Mbps and upload speeds of 1-5Mbps with an average device to network edge round-trip latency of 30-56ms. The average speed and latency of our 5G network is suitable for video and audio streaming, web browsing and other general Internet usage consistent with Sprint's terms and conditions.

* We expect network speeds will continue to improve as we optimize the 5G network and add new capabilities.

Those speeds are pretty bad, considering Verison's UWB is getting 1.2Gbps.  Is Sprint just aggregating multiple 20Mhz blocks on LTE and calling it a day?

Parts of Omaha showing 5g

What device did you select? That is probably the old LTE Plus map. Some devices seem to be incorrectly showing that, and will just show LTE if you click through to the coverage tool.

Verizon's MM-WAVE 5G has horrid coverage, in reality cant really compare, but Sprint's using 40 or 60Mhz block of 5G NR  thats peaking around 800mbs...

One of the 5g devices, but can't seem to replicate the map now.  Hmmm

Sprint's 5G performance is similar to the 5G networks launching in Europe. The benefit of Sprint's 5G network is that at least you have contiguous coverage, both indoors and outdoors and even while driving around. With mmWave, if you aren't within direct line of sight of a cell site, your speeds will drop to below Sprint advertised average speeds. Also mmWave signal is pretty much non-existent if you have so much as a pane of glass in the way.

Peak performance ≠ Average performance

For LTE yeah.  Sprint has real 5G NR, just like everyone else.  The difference is VZW/ATT/TMobile are aggregating multiple (4 and 5) 50/100MHz channels.  Sprint is deploying 60? MHz for 5G. Nothing wrong with the 60Mhz since we are talking UHF vs K/Ka bands. Pros and cons to both deployments.
