I don't recall it being a 4g fee at all. I remember it being a smartphone fee

It was called a "Premium" data fee and was introduced with the EVO 4G launch, hence why a lot of people think of it as a 4G fee.  But it was for all smartphone upgrades after the EVO launch.

interesting I thought they changed it.

Actually I think the issue I recall was that phones or smartphones like the Instinct or pre that didn't have WiMAX were charged the fee. And was then switched to premium data fee. Or was that backwards hmmm

Or I suppose it's all in my head

I was semi correct. Seems it was only charged on the 4g phones at the time. Even if you didn't have the service.

Either way poor name...

Interesting read.

seeking Alpha: Now is not the Time to buy T-Mobile

speaks of mountain of debt that others fail to mention (except s4gru)

T-Mobile is currently priced at a premium for many rosy scenarios, be it continued subscription momentum or buyout offers.  One can draw a parallel to Sprint in late 2013 / early 2014 when S traded in the $8-$10 range based on a possible merger with T-Mobile.  When that effort was given up, the stock proceeded to plummet more than 50%.

Sprint could have dropped those sponsorships years ago without any impact on the company's perception or growth.  That money is better spent on innovative projects like "Direct to You" or sponsoring and promoting at the local level in cities and regional areas where the network is really shining right now.

Well I can only speak for myself but I don't like this, I have a quite of few friends that use the service.

What service are you referring to?  They cut the sponsorship deal with the NBA. I wasn't aware there was any service associated with it.

There's an NBA app with free radio broadcasts of games available to Sprint. But it really doesn't do anything that most other sports app can already do.

you can watch NBA TV games from the app as well. So it wasn't all radio.

Scores and stats, yes. Radio broadcasts from both teams all in one place, no.

I also think eventually Sprint will pick up a soccer/football sponsor and Beckham and Claure are so tight.

Probably. Marcelo goes to quite a few soccer games over in KC every now and then and it's a growing sport across the nation.

Got MLS expansion cities like Minnesota and LAFC building / looking to build brand new 20,000k capacity stadiums along with infrastructure improvements (good time for new cell sites / small cells and fiber!)  and lower division squads popping up literally overnight and getting ~10,000k + attendance figures (sac republic & louisville).

Wouldn't be surprised if they became an official sponsor for them (MLS / NASL / USL) sooner or later since it's not as big of a big deal as NBA or NFL or Nascar but it's growing rapidly and most likely cheaper to buy in and get some brownie points with the younger demographic.

I love the NBA and I use this app every season. Shame really I see where Sprint is going with this. I do feel like Sprint is starting to take more than they are giving and T-mobile is doing the opposite. Not smart on either end. Sprint may take until customers start leaving again and T-mobile is going to run itself into the ground with all the feebies.

    • I think the push for them is adding US Mobile as a MVNO with a priority data plan.  Ultimately, making people more aware of priority would allow them (and other carriers) to differentiate themselves from MVNOs like Consumer Cellular that advertise the same coverage. n77 has dramatically reduced the need for priority service at Verizon where the mere functioning of your phone was in jeopardy a couple of years ago if you had a low priority plan like Red Pocket. Only have heard of problems with T-Mobile in parts of Los Angeles. AT&T fell in between. All had issues at large concerts and festivals, or sporting events if your carrier has no on-site rights. Edit: Dishes native 5g network has different issues: not enough sites, limited bandwidth. Higher priority would help a few. Truth is they can push phones to AT&T or T-Mobile.
    • Tracfone AT&T sims went from QCI 8 to 9 as well a couple years ago. I'm pretty neutral towards AT&T's turbo feature here, the only bad taste left was for those who had unadvertised QCI 7 a couple months ago moved down to 8. In my eyes it would have been a lot better for AT&T to include turbo in those Premium/Elite plans for free to keep them at QCI 7, while also introducing this turbo add on option for any other plans or devices. As it stands now only a handful of plans can add it, and only if you're using a device on a random list of devices AT&T considers to be 5G smartphones.
    • My Red Pocket AT&T GSMA account was dropped to QCI 9 about a year ago.  Most recently 8 for the last few years prior.  Voice remains at 5.
    • https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2024/05/att-announces-7-monthly-add-on-fee-for-turbo-5g-speeds/ Hopefully we don't ever see T-Mobile do something like this. Based on how I was treated with my Credit Limit, it's definitely not the same company it was before the merger, and it's entirely possible they'd try it.
