Understood.  As long as you know what to expect, then you will probably be able to cope.  However, if you pay full retail price and expect it to be equal to other LTE devices, you would sorely be disappointed.

I think I paid $250 (shipping included) for two phones the wife and I use.  The performance of the phone is a lot better than the old Gingerbread phones we were using, and at least we can use Android 4.x.  I was figuring with all the ugrades Sprint was doing 3G would become more usable (less people on it, more bandwidth to towers, better antenna, etc.). 

 

We both use WiFi at home and usually use other devices there as well since we have 30mbps up/5mbps down through Time Warner.  And we have WiFi at work as well, so that's a good chunk of our time anyways.

 

I looked at Senesorly and it looks like my office is right in the middie of an area with "weak" LTE signal (light purple) and I go to work through "weak" LTE signal.  Maybe the RF issues of the phone confuses it - it gets enough signal to switch off 3G, but not enough signal to latch on to 4G.

 

And who knows what Sprint is tweaking in the area to maximize coverage.  I've had times where I picked up a strong LTE signal one day, and the next day, nothing.

The EVO LTE is a decent device.  The biggest issue with it is that it will lose an LTE signal at the edge of service much sooner than other Band 25 devices.  It also is less likely to have indoor coverage, unless a 1/4-1/2 mile from a site.  And when you start to get back into LTE coverage, it will take longer to reconnect.  And since the signal is weaker, it is also typically slower than other Band 25 LTE devices.

 

Our members who know what to expect with the EVO LTE get along just fine.  But others start getting mad about the Sprint LTE network, when in reality the issue is the device.  In contrast, a Nexus 5 (the best RF performer) would have nearly double the square mileage of coverage in the Rochester area than an EVO LTE does.  And it will be faster and more usable indoors.

Yep, we are generally happy with the phone and it works well for our use case.  Thank you for the additional information.  It was just weird that if I turn off LTE, things work normally, when before I didn't have to do anything.  Things seem to be working as expected in Cyanogenmod, so it could be that stock could be a bit buggy. 

 

Maybe someday we'll get the Nexus 5 :)

Dear god. I've done and accidentally the internet. Never occurred to me that Greece might actually be a city. Why my mind went straight to santorini, greece is beyond me. I need some coffee.

Good.  I know they are playing with their systems based on the issues I've been having with 3G/4G connectivity. 

 

Sounds like full 3G/4G services were down but 1x is available, near both my house (greece) and my office (brighton).

I was around Henrietta today and the best speeds I was seeing on LTE was around 2.5 mbps on the download and 3 or 4 on the upload. I am hoping there is still tweaking to be done to see something a little bit faster, but that is definitely more usable than Sprint 3G ever was so I'm not going to complain.

maybe weak signal? install signalcheck and see what signal strength you were getting at the time of the speed test.

I have it installed, the signal was between moderate and strong. I would say between -85 to -95dbm the whole time. I think it's just very crowded.

This morning, in Canal View, just off Brighton Henrietta TL road and Winton, I got 14Mbps down and 6.5Mbps up.

Doesn't look like a Sprint, more like ATT and Verizon. But ill leave that to the experts.

It certainly isn't Sprint NV equipment (unless it is a GMO site). It might be Sprint legacy, but I am not an expert on that.

      I think the push for them is adding US Mobile as a MVNO with a priority data plan.  Ultimately, making people more aware of priority would allow them (and other carriers) to differentiate themselves from MVNOs like Consumer Cellular that advertise the same coverage. n77 has dramatically reduced the need for priority service at Verizon where the mere functioning of your phone was in jeopardy a couple of years ago if you had a low priority plan like Red Pocket. Only have heard of problems with T-Mobile in parts of Los Angeles. AT&T fell in between. All had issues at large concerts and festivals, or sporting events if your carrier has no on-site rights. Edit: Dishes native 5g network has different issues: not enough sites, limited bandwidth. Higher priority would help a few. Truth is they can push phones to AT&T or T-Mobile.

      Tracfone AT&T sims went from QCI 8 to 9 as well a couple years ago. I'm pretty neutral towards AT&T's turbo feature here, the only bad taste left was for those who had unadvertised QCI 7 a couple months ago moved down to 8. In my eyes it would have been a lot better for AT&T to include turbo in those Premium/Elite plans for free to keep them at QCI 7, while also introducing this turbo add on option for any other plans or devices. As it stands now only a handful of plans can add it, and only if you're using a device on a random list of devices AT&T considers to be 5G smartphones.

      My Red Pocket AT&T GSMA account was dropped to QCI 9 about a year ago.  Most recently 8 for the last few years prior.  Voice remains at 5.

Based on how I was treated with my Credit Limit, it's definitely not the same company it was before the merger, and it's entirely possible they'd try it.
