Network Vision/LTE - Milwaukee Market (including Madison)

Madison actually has a tower with an actual acceptance!  The first time since August.  Too bad its a 3G acceptance which essentially means that the equipment is in place but there is no backhaul for LTE (I believe).  I was pretty sure that Sprint forgot about us.

Good to see all my pictures from the In Progress thread make it up there. It looks a lot better now with more pins in the map.

I actually had 4G for about 3 minutes while I was at the PDQ near 1 St street here in Madison. My phone started vibrating on and off while I was on Williamson St and while I was on east wash. Of course I'm now back to 1xRTT. I think Sprint is just taunting me now.

I've been 3G, then 1x, then eHRPD, then back again all day downtown. Still 3G in Fitchburg too. No eHRPD here. (after power cycles, etc.)

Well... Looks like we got stuck with only 1 update (3g at that) but I have to say, I am super excited today!! I've been keeping an eye on what I believe to be my home tower on 92nd and Beloit, which had new cabinets and Fiber already and today I drove past and saw some wires hanging from the racks so I had to cruise by and BAM, a trailer parked next to it, and new NV panels laying on the ground inside the fence! I'm so happy!

I still can't quite figure out how to post those nice thumbnails that people can click on to open the full image :/ So here, you can look at my dropbox folder or this site i uploaded them to as well....

The last picture of the cherry picker thing, that is next to the other tower, right across the street. I'm sure they just parked it over there cuz there isn't much room next to the actual tower Sprint shares with AT&T.

I saw Pieper working on the tower at 56th and Oklahoma by the firehouse about two months ago but i am not sure if Sprint has antennas there since my signal is not that good in that area.  Any insight if this is Sprint upgrade work going on?

That must be another carrier. I do not believe there is a Sprint tower near there.

Pieper had the same model lift and trailer there that you have pictures of at the site on 56th.  They had two lines come down just like they do on the tower at 92nd now. Drove past the site on 92nd today with my girfriend in the truck and she could not figure out what i was so excited about.  It may just be what they use when they do any work on towers but i thought i would bring it up. I did not take pictures since its a firehouse and i didn't want to go behind there without permission.  The tower at 56th has 6 different types of cell antennas plus the array on top for the MPD and MFD communications.  Before the work started there was i believe there was only 5.  Not sure who is all on the tower but it would be nice to find out just out of curiosity.

Haha, I had my girlfriend in the car too. She wasn't feeling well, so I'm lucky I was able to stop at all. I would have taken more pictures otherwise :)

Thanks mark for providing great network updates.

Updates are happening in the milwaukee market.

The site on hwy 60 in grafton is now broadcasting 1x800

I was just up there right by that tower and i didn't get any 800 at all...

You will not pick up 800 if coming from the legacy sites in mequon.

Do a PRL update and you will switch over to 1x800

Site ID is also now 22xxx

I also connected to 1x800 on the falls rd tower

I drove by there on my way to work again this morning and saw the guys out there working at 7am in the rain. I really wanted to stop and talk to em, but I didn't leave early enough to be able to stop and chat. I'll be driving by on my way home for sure, so maybe they'll still be there.

Thankfully there's only a couple fervent trackers here else work would never get done :-)

haha. Well as long as we all pay attention to each others' posts, and keep sharing info, they should only get bothered ONCE at each cell tower :P

Is La Crosse, WI included in the Milwaukee market?  Does anyone know if/when La Crosse will be getting NV updates?  I need to get a new phone soon, and I'm wondering if it pays to wait for a tri-band phone like the LG G2.

It looks like LaCrosse already has a bunch of LTE. Go to www.sensorly.com and look at the coverage maps there, switch it to "Sprint 4G" and you can see that users have mapped a bunch of 4G LTE coverage around LaCrosse. There are a few more towers around that area that haven't been completed yet, but it's pretty much covered.

Me thinks our Madison 3G accepted tower is actually a 4G accepted tower.  No way you get that purple from any of the other towers that are already broadcasting (Middleton or SP)....and that tower is real close to where its darkest.  The dawn is always purplest before the light......  Anyone able to map some more around there???

Thanks.  I know that La Crosse has LTE on the initial 1900 mhz spectrum, but was wondering if/when they might be getting the other LTE spectrums (800 mhz, 2600 mhz).  Is the goal of Network Vision to eventually upgrade every single Sprint cell tower, or just the ones in major cities?

It is in the Minnesota market.

Most every tower.  Like 99% of them. There's only a few that won't be, but you can rest assured that most ones that you hit will be updated.

I don't think anyone has any solid info on when sites will be upgraded to include the other LTE spectrum. That'll probably be some time next year. I think they're just trying to go balls-to-the-wall on getting the initial 1900Mhz LTE deployed so they try to catch up to the other carriers.

Well, the equipment they're installing for 1900 LTE will do the 800 LTE as well, so that's just a flip o' the switch on their end.  However, the 2600 will require more hardware, I'm not too concerned about it because the 800 will be what puts them on par with everyone else.

I posted about a week or more back about a Samsung test driver telling me that this month they would be getting equipment to test lte 800 so it will probably be sooner than we think.

But then again he tests from Madison south to the border and as far north as green bay. So who knows where it will pop up first.

I should be able to do some mapping around there during the next few days.

    • Quote from wsj; "The T-Mobile deal could be reached as soon as later this month, while discussions with Verizon on a separate transaction are expected to take longer or might not result in an agreement, the people said." "The rising value of wireless licenses is a driving force behind the deal. U.S. Cellular’s spectrum portfolio touches 30 states and covers about 51 million people, according to regulatory filings." https://specmap.sequence-omega.net/
    • From WSJ which is paywalled but they're reporting that T-Mobile and Verizon are working on a joint deal to buy and split up U.S. Cellular. https://www.wsj.com/business/telecom/t-mobile-verizon-in-talks-to-carve-up-u-s-cellular-46d1e5e6?st=qwngrnh4s3bcr76 — — — — —  Summary from a user in the Reddit thread:
    • So, in summary, here are the options I tested: T-Mobile intl roaming - LTE on SoftBank, routes back to the US (~220ms to 4.2.2.4) IIJ physical SIM - LTE on NTT, local routing Airalo - LTE on SoftBank and KDDI (seems to prefer SoftBank), routed through Singapore (SingTel) Ubigi - 5G on NTT, routed through Singapore (Transatel) US Mobile East Asia roaming - 5G on SoftBank, routed through Singapore (Club SIM) Saily - 5G on NTT, routed through Hong Kong (Truphone)...seems to be poorer routing my1010 - LTE on SoftBank and KDDI (seems to prefer KDDI), routed through Taiwan (Chunghwa Telecom) I wouldn't buy up on the T-Mobile international roaming, but it's a solid fallback. If you have the US Mobile roaming eSIM that's a great option. Otherwise Ubigi, Airalo, or my1010 are all solid options, so get whatever's cheapest. I wouldn't bother trying to find a physical SIM from IIJ...the Japanese IP is nice but there's enough WiFi that you can get a Japanese IP enough for whatever you need, and eSIM flexibility is great (IIJ as eSIM but seems a bit more involved to get it to work).
    • So, the rural part of the journey still has cell service for nearly all the way, usually on B18/19/8 (depending on whether we're talking about KDDI/NTT/SoftBank). I think I saw a bit of B28 and even n28 early on in the trip, though that faded out after a bit. Once we got to where we were going though, KDDI had enough B41 to pull 150+ Mbps, while NTT and SoftBank had B1/B3 IIRC. Cell service was likewise generally fine from Kawaguchiko Station to Tokyo on the express bus to Shinjuku Station, though there were some cases where only low-band LTE was available and capacity seemed to struggle. I also figured out what I was seeing with SoftBank on 40 MHz vs. 100 MHz n77: the 40 MHz blocks are actually inside the n78 band class, but SoftBank advertises them as n77, probably to facilitate NR CA. My phone likely preferred the 40 MHz slices as they're *much* lower-frequency, ~3.4 GHz rather than ~3.9, though of course I did see the 100 MHz slice being used rather often. By contrast, when I got NR on NTT it was either n28 10x10 or, more often, 100 MHz n78. As usual, EMEA bands on my S24 don't CA, so any data speeds I saw were the result of either one LTE carrier or one LTE carrier plus one NR carrier...except for B41 LTE. KDDI seems to have more B41 bandwidth live at this point, so my1010 or Airalo works well for this, and honestly while SoftBank and NTT 5G (in descending order of availability) have 5G that's readily available it may be diminishing returns, particularly given that I still don't know how to, as someone not from Hong Kong, get an eSIM that runs on SoftBank 5G that isn't the USM "comes for free with the unlimited premium package" roaming eSIM (NTT is easy enough thanks to Ubigi). In other news, I was able to borrow someone's Rakuten eSIM and...got LTE with it. 40 Mbps down, 20 Mbps up, 40ms latency to Tokyo while in Tokyo...which isn't any worse than the Japan-based physical SIMs I had used earlier. But not getting n77 or n257 was disappointing, though I had to test the eSIM from one spot rather than bouncing around the city to find somewhere with better reception. It's currently impossible to get a SIM as a foreigner that runs on Rakuten, so that was the best I could do. Also, I know my phone doesn't have all the LTE and 5G bands needed to take full advantage of Japanese networks. My S24 is missing: B21 (1500 MHz) - NTT B11 (1500 MHz) - KDDI, SoftBank B42 (3500 MHz) - NTT, KDDI, SoftBank n79 (4900 MHz) - NTT Of the above, B42/n79 are available on the latest iPhones, though you lose n257, and I'm guessing you're not going to find B11/B21 on a phone sold outside Japan.
