Dear S4GRU Members:

 

I wanted to drop you a line and let you know my availability is going to be much more limited over the next 4-6 weeks.  I have accepted a new position and will be moving from New Mexico and relocating my family to the Rapid City, South Dakota area.

 

I am going to be doing a lot of travelling in this period, going back and forth between New Mexico and South Dakota.  I start work on Monday, but will be coming home on the weekends until I we move in Mid October.  I also have to go to Phoenix for orientation.  I will not be available very often to respond to posts or to messages/e-mails.  I am going to be very dependent on our Staff during this transition period.

 

Sadly, after the move, I will be outside of Sprint service.  So I will not be able to keep Sprint as my primary wireless carrier.  I will maintain one line for the times when I leave the area and get back into Sprint coverage.  I'm still deciding on a Triband device.  But this will not have any impact on S4GRU.

 

I would greatly appreciate your help during this time.  Help answering questions posed by members in public threads.  Help directing member inquiries to the right thread or to the right staff member.  Help by not burdening me with lots of posts and messages.  And turning to our staff in public posts and sending messages directly to them first with your questions.  I will swing by in the evenings or while waiting in airports to add another voice to the chorus.

 

Also, please respect my privacy.  I no longer feel that I can disclose many personal details like I used to and I will not be answering personal questions about my relocation or new job.

 

I am really looking forward to settling in Western South Dakota.  I believe the Black Hills is one of the most beautiful and peaceful places in this country.  And I am looking forward to being able to breathe again.  I have severe allergies here that can sometimes even be life threatening.  

 

I am thankful to have such a great group of guys (and now even a few ladies) to have such a great community with.  I am grateful for all that you put into S4GRU, through your participation in posting and financial support.  S4GRU is now in a position that I can take a step back and our members, sponsors and staff can run with the ball for a little while.

 

Thanks for all you do!

Good luck! The black hills are a beautiful place! Haven't been there in years even though I'm only 1 state to the east. If you enjoy fishing, head over to MN and visit some of our lakes for great fishing!

Good luck! I just completed a move myself and it sure is hectic and stressful but it'll be over soon. Location is everything and it sounds like you've picked out a really beautiful place to be that will more than make it worth all the trouble.

 

I guess you'll be right there with those of us rooting harder than ever for some more rural buildout from Sprint. Onward!

Good luck at you're new job, Robert! I do my best to help new/uninformed members and don't worry about S4GRU, I and all of the staff and dedicated users will make sure that this is a smooth transition for S4GRU while you worry about making a smooth transition for your family.

Congrats and enjoy! You seem to have set this site in motion to an extent that can't be slowed even by your brief absence. It's an exciting time to be here, but I'm sure you'll be back before things get too crazy.

I really appreciate all you have done, and continue to do here at S4GRU. It's amazing to see how far this community has come and, I'm honored to be a (small) part of it.  You've produced the best online community I've ever seen, along with our fine group of moderators, contributors, and experts; and, for that, I thank you!

 

Like others have mentioned, I will be sad to see you leave Sprint as your primary cellular provider but, not like you really have a choice. 

 

I wish you the best of luck with your new endeavors (not that you'll really need it) and, safe travels to you and your family. I wish you all the best with your new home!

No doubt. I'd love to see Sprint do a full NV conversion on the Rapid City WiMax Protection Site, and then expand coverage around the area. And maybe they can start next week? ;)

Just make sure to give Sprint your address, so they can put a tower in your back yard :)

With all the customers and enthusiasm this website has retained for Sprint, I think they could certainly throw you a bone. Assuming the WiMax at the protection sites will be shut down late next year like the rest of them and replaced with TDD LTE, I'll have my fingers crossed that by 2015 you'll be able to end your fling with Big Red.

But now that Sprint owns Clearwire, there is technically one Sprint site in Rapid City. But it only has WiMax. No voice at all.

Sure, all he has to do is grab a Wimax phone and use VOIP for his calls. He can also use an airave at home with the workaround of turning it on in a Sprint service area and then moving it while keeping the power on.

 

The one and only true Sprint subscriber in Rapid City.  :P

Robert, like myself, is off the grid. Although to be fair I can order Sprint service here, it's just that 1X on ATNI roaming is like nails on chalk. And there's the whole Golden Ticket thing.

 

I'd pick VZW since their devices are for the most part unlocked and you can insert AT&T SIM's in for testing too.

Good luck with the move. I hope you enjoy your new location in South Dakota. There is a lot of beauty and serenity that can be experienced in the Dakotas and that entire area of the country.

 

I know that it is hard having to give up control of your "baby", but as you have mentioned many times in the past, and we all can agree, this place has a great staff that will keep this place going with great momentum. Hopefully soon there will be coverage in your area. With the TD-LTE expansion, the chances seem high. When I moved to Iowa many years back, I had to go through the same pains of having to give up my Sprint service. But, absence makes the heart grow fonder. We should start a petition for Hesse to air drop a fully NV upgraded stealth site disguised as a large Colonel Sanders lawn gnome in your new backyard. Let's make this happen.

      A heavy n41 overlay as an acquisition condition would be a win for customers, and eventually a win for T-Mobile as that might be enough to preclude VZW/AT&T adding C-Band for FWA due to spreading the market too thinly (which means T-Mobile would just have local WISPs/wireline ISPs as competition). USCC spacing (which is likely for contiguous 700 MHz LTE coverage in rural areas) isn't going to be enough for contiguous n41 anyway, and I doubt they'll densify enough to get there.

      Boost Infinite with a rainbow SIM (you can get it SIM-only) is the cheapest way, at $25/mo, to my knowledge; the cheaper Boost Mobile plans don't run on Dish native. Check Phonescoop for n70 support on a given phone; the Moto G 5G from last year may be the cheapest unlocked phone with n70 though data speeds aren't as good as something with an X70 or better modem.

      Continuing the USCC discussion, if T-Mobile does a full equipment swap at all of USCC's sites, which they probably will for vendor consistency, and if they include 2.5 on all of those sites, which they probably will as they definitely have economies of scale on the base stations, that'll represent a massive capacity increase in those areas over what USCC had, and maybe a coverage increase since n71 will get deployed everywhere and B71 will get deployed any time T-Mobile has at least 25x25, and maybe where they have 20x20. Assuming this deal goes through (I'm betting it does), I figure I'll see contiguous coverage in the area of southern IL where I was attempting to roam on USCC the last time I was there, though it might be late next year before that switchover happens.

      Forgot to post this, but a few weeks ago I got to visit these small cells myself! They're spread around Grant park and the surrounding areas, but unfortunately none of the mmwave cells made it outside of the parks along the lake into the rest of downtown. I did spot some n41 small cells around downtown, but they seemed to be older deployments limited to 100mhz and performed poorly.

      What is the cheapest way to try Dish's wireless network?  Over the past year I've seen them add their equipment to just about every cell site here, I'm assuming just go through Boost's website?  What phones are Dish native?
