Network Vision/LTE - SF Bay Market

It's usually a sign of work in progress. Things should settle down in a few days. Then a week or so later, you might see LTE. However, with towers spaced as close as two blocks apart, you might be seeing a lot of flakyness. The site is predicting LTE launch for SF in February. While that might be optimistic, there's still much work left to be done. Where exactly in SF are you having problems?

I'm getting less optimistic for February with every passing day.

Well that's not good. Is there a particular holdup in this market?

The easy to convert sites are just about done. The ones left are the grinders. Difficult permitting, difficult logistics, or still waiting on backhaul. Samsung is still plotting along, but I think we are in a little bit of a logjam. We probably will have less sites for a few weeks until the jam clears.

Well that sucks. Are you talking about sf or the whole bay area? I was kinda surprised to see no towers in Berkeley with all the sporadic coverage. Berkeley must be really difficult to get permits.

Pretty much the whole market that's left. Contra Costa, Solano, Marin, Napa, Sonoma and Lake Counties will continue to full completion without much problem. San Francisco, Alameda and San Mateo counties will grind along all the way to the end. And some cities, specifically like Berkeley, are going to be especially hard.

They will continue, don't get me wrong. Probably a few sites per week. But Samsung will not be able to fly through it like they have the outlier counties.

Wow. Thanks for the update. How about south bay progress?

I don't know much about South Bay. But it's been pretty quiet lately.

I hope it's a sign of work in progress, but I don't think so considering that I get this problem in a large part of the city such as the Golden Gate park, Chinatown, the portola district, and the sunset district. My routes around these areas vary so I cover a good portion of the city in a week easily. Recently however, I've been able to get back onto EVDO quicker so that it isn't as annoying as before where when I dropped to 1x nothing would work for a few minutes. I'm still confused at what is happening though...

I vaguely remember Steve jobs saying something about how while it takes 3 weeks to get permits for cell towers in texas, it takes 3 years to get permits for cell towers in San Francisco.

Of course it's easier for sprint since they're just upgrading stuffs instead of building new towers but it's the same lesson: San Francisco is difficult when it comes to things cell tower related.

*fixed* Not going to be political but it's california... bureaucracy and government slows anything and everything down...

*Going to call Berkeley as one of the last city if not the last city to start / finish NV upgrades.

Thanks. I stay mostly above 101 in mtn view. But I go dinner once or twice a week on Castro, never got any signal. So must be a new tower.

Unfortunately, the tower closer to most of the restaurants is still "in progress", and wasn't broadcasting LTE when I walked by on Thursday 1/24.

I don't think all towers around MV are upgraded yet. Some definitely are, as I do see LTE periodically, but even if you're standing outside at the Caltrain station, there's no LTE in sight.

Yeah, definitely not all. The one near the Caltrain station is the same one I referenced above :D

For the first time I was driving home and got 4g right by my house, as I got off 880. Continued driving with 4g. Turned onto my street with 4g. Got a block from my house and lost 4g. Why are u teasing me LTE gods?

Off of Thornton in Fremont. Last night after the depressing loss, still mourning the 49ers today, i had 4G on my block. I thought to myself at least i have LTE now...at that moment i was in front of my neighbors house and the icon turned back to 3G. Such a tease.
