Network Vision/LTE - SF Bay Market

Does Sensorely show them too?

Sensorly will show them only if someone drove by with the app running.

Also, seeing a new tower light up isn't always super obvious, since it may be adjacent to an existing tower.

In the past week, I've personally mapped some coverage in these three areas (with new towers on in the past week):

1) Montague @ 880 (not to be confused with Great Mall area's coverage)

2) N Fair Oaks Ave @ Central Expy (not to be confused with existing Central Expy coverage)

3) 880 between Stevenson Blvd and Cushing Pkwy/Fremont Blvd.

I also added some mere dots near the SJC airport, and noticed someone else added some more by Eastridge Mall (another tower turned on there.) Also, 85 by De Anza Blvd. .. and 101 @ Rengstorff (by the Google campus.)

In other news, my 3G has been dropping extremely frequently at my desk this morning. I hope that means there's some work going on!

I haven't seen much expansion is this market for the last two weeks. It used to be that you could find new towers weekly, but hard to say if work is done to prep more towers or if people and equipment have been sent to help out LA and other markets.

There is expansion, but more slowly, and they seem to be hitting the north (and by north I mean practically Sacramento) bay much more heavily than any other area. I can also say that I in the South Bay am not seeing LTE in a lot of areas I did previously... they might have started the blocking.

I just mapped the area around this water tower yesterday. Noticed it when I checked my phone and turned on sensorly as soon as I could. Got about 4mbps down, 3mbps up.

My eyes are burning just thinking about it. I have sensitive eyes. They cannot handle the air quality in Benicia or Martinez unless the air is blowing. :(

Yeah, I don't blame you. I was there visiting my family. Every time I head there my allergies go crazy.

If you switch the map to satellite you can see the water tank from an angle view. There is an antenna structure next to the water tank but I think the actual sprint panels are mounted on the water tank itself. The antenna structure is for police and fire dispatch and a local ham radio club.

I used to run the Western Region for a hotel developer and had hotels in Napa, Pleasant Hill, San Ramon, Santa Clara, San Jose and Sacramento. I drove through Benicia all the time.

I've been unable to connect to the new one by 880/Montague that I found twice last week (and was added to the Sponsor-only "NV Sites Complete" thread.) Tried last night and today.

First time that I've been unable to connect to previously-found LTE. I only tried for a few minutes though.

I was unable to connect to LTE at all on Saratoga in the places I had it previously, but I noticed right near Saratoga and 85 there was a tower that looked like it had NV work being done on it, so maybe they had deactivated it there as they were working on it in the area... I don't know.

Some new dots over the water in sf today. Some ferry riders I guess. Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk 2

I was on a Halloween boat cruise. Takes a few days for the dots to show up.

I went wine tasting on Friday, and found LTE in V. Sattui and Korbel. Yes, you roam on the road to Korbel, but get LTE once actually there. You'll find a dot there on Sensorly. The planning department must have many wine lovers. :)

The site near Guerneville went live last week. Good timing. One of the best coffees I've ever had was near the river on the west side of Guerneville at a place called Spliff's. I'm not sure it was the coffee, or the contact high from the on site medicinal marijuana lounge. ;)

So I was comparing the rollout status page this week vs last week for all markets, and "% of towers complete" went up by only 1-2% for most locations in a given week. At 1%-2%/week, rollouts will take at least a year in most areas. Given that many expected "launch dates" (like LA area) or just a month or two away, is the rate expected to accelerate at some point soon?

For example, when i look at San Francisco sensorly map, I haven't seen a single new tower lit up in at least 3 weeks, yet I'm that even at a rate of 1 tower/week, the rollout will take years. (ok, that's me speculating at this point, since I don't know how many towers Sprint has in SF proper)

Production dropped in all markets this past week. It is assumed that they sent a lot of crews to Hurricane ravaged areas to help restore service. It may even affect deployment rate for another week.

The best place to monitor deployment is our Sponsor maps that are updated with newly completed sites every week.

Umm, Multiple towers go live in SF every week. S4GRU reported 21 tower upgrades last week, 21 the week before that, 37 the week before that, and.......

If you want to know more and the exact location of each tower, become a S4GRU sponsor: http://s4gru.com/index.php?/topic/1195-information-about-s4gru-sponsorship-levels-and-how-to-become-a-sponsor/

Are those for all of SF market, or specifically within city limits?

Also, does "21 tower upgraded" translate loosely into 1% of towers upgraded? Still seems like a slow pace, but glad it's faster than what I thought.

Its a lot faster than what you stated. 20 to 40 towers a week in a single market, like they've been doing in SF, is pretty good. You'll have to become a sponsor for more info.

  • 2 weeks later...

Brentwood has not shown up in Sprint's updates or on Sensorly, yet. Stay tuned. We update the maps in our Sponsor section every week showing all the sites Sprint accepted from their OEM's the week before. LTE is alive in spots of Brentwood! Today I was able to connect to LTE at the corner of Vasco and Walnut Blvd. Woohoo!

Got a quick question about permitting for cell sites for Robert or anyone else. Being that the Bay Area is very stingy on giving permits on cell towers, namely Marin county, can a city deny a cell site for lte? If not, can some cities take longer to approve cites than others?

    • I'm currently typing this from a bullet train headed from Tokyo to Osaka. Using a roaming eSIM rather than T-Mobile as it's a lot cheaper, but I'll start with T-Mobile's roaming experience. Since I have a business line, I can't add data packs online, so I'm just using the 256 kbps baseline service you get by default. That service runs on Softank 4G. SoftBank has a well-built-out LTE network though, with plenty of B41, falling back to B1/3/8 as needed. 5G roaming from T-Mobile doesn't appear to exist though. I've seen 20+10 MHz B41 when I've looked, generally speaking. WiFi calling works well, and voice calls over LTE work fine too (I forgot to turn WiFi back on after doing some testing, so I expect my bill to be a dollar more next month). I want to say I even got HD voice over the cell network for the VoLTE call I did. I have a bunch of eSIMs and a couple of physical SIMs to try out. I've gotten the eSIMs up and running, but last I checked the physical SIM wasn't working even after activation so I'll run through eSIMs for the moment and update this thread with pSIM info and details on not-Tokyo in the coming days. First off, there's US Mobile's complimentary East Asia eSIM (5GB) that I grabbed before my unlimited plan Stateside expired. That SIM uses SIM Club, routing through Singapore, running on SoftBank LTE and 5G. I've seen 40 MHz n77, as well as 10x10 n28, and have seen download speeds in excess of 200 Mbps with uploads of more than 50 Mbps, though typical speeds are slower. Routing is via Equinix/Packet.net. 5G coverage is rather spotty, but LTE is plenty fast enough; either my phone doesn't want to use the 5G band combos that have more coverage or 5G coverage is just spottier here than in the US (at least on T-Mibile). Latency is as low as 95ms to sites in Singapore (usually closer to 120ms), which is pretty great considering the 3300 mi between Tokyo and Singapore. Next there's Ubigi. It also routes through Singapore via Transatel (despite being owned by NTT), and sites on top of NTT docomo's network. I didn't see NTT 5G in Tokyo when I tested it, but since then I've seen 10x10 n28, and have seen B1/B3/B19 on the LTE side. So far it's not the fastest thing out there, but I'm guessing coverage will be a little better...or maybe not. This was $17 for 10GB. Latency is a bit higher to Singapore, but still under 150ms it seems. Then there's Airalo, which was the cheapest when I bought it at $9 for 10GB. It also routes through Singapore (on Singtel), but on my S24 I have my pick of KDDI (au) or SoftBank. KDDI has extensive B41 coverage and I've seen 20+20 with UL CA. While waiting for the train at HND Terminal 3 (Keikyu line) I hit 250+ Mbps down and 10+ Mbps up...over LTE...with pretty respectable latency numbers (not much above 100ms). This is in adition to supporting SoftBank, also on LTE (my S24 defaulted to KDDI, while my wife's Pixel 8 defaulted to SoftBank and didn't seem to want to connect to KDDI). Of the various carriers mentioned, I'd say this was the best pick, though prices have bumped back up to $18 for the 10GB plan...but it's probably still what I'd pick if I had to pick just one carrier. Then there's Saily, which uses Truphone out of Hong Kong. I haven't used this as much, as I only grabbed 3GB for $7. It runs on NTT but doesn't seem to have 5G access and doesn't seem to have as good speeds. Yes, Hong Kong is way closer to Japan, but latency didn't seem to be any better, at ~150ms. In all cases, I've had reception even in train tunnels and even at high speed on the bullet train, on all three carriers I've tried (I don't think I'll be able to play with a Rakuten SIM, which is rather disappointing). There have been cases where service has degraded, but it looks like you'd have reasonable cell service no matter which of the big three carriers you picked...and since T-Mobile roams on one of them, that's good enough if you're content to buy day passes.
    • https://www.phonearena.com/news/t-mobile-older-rate-plan-prices-june_id157821 We're on Sprint Max for our seven phone/two Apple Watch (with Cellular) family plan... Because it doesn't make sense to switch to anything else, especially if we can't even finance all of our devices. Some of you may recall that T-Mobile suddenly cut our credit limit to $1,500 (which is barely more than one iPhone 15 Pro) with no notice at all. I escalated it to the Office of the CEO and was told to pound sand, even though I have 800+ Credit as a longtime customer and was suddenly being treated as a deadbeat. I ultimately upgraded my three iPhone lines directly through Apple and they're Unlocked. I haven't bothered to check on whether my Credit Limit has updated, but I don't plan on upgrading them through T-Mobile again. I guess we'll find out if "Sprint Max" counts as "older" soon enough.
