I live in San Antonio, and I haven't seen much in the way of LTE at all. I had connection for about 5 minutes on the 13th at 1604 and 281 and for about 20 minutes yesterday at Bandera and 1604 but otherwise, nothing. I live and work downtown right in the middle of a bunch of towers, but I haven't had much luck. Hopefully, Sprint is still in the process of getting their towers online, and availability will improve over the next few days/weeks.

 

EDIT: I checked out sprint.com/coverage, and supposedly, LTE availability shouldn't be a problem. Maybe they haven't flipped the switch on the tower in the area.

I'm at 3040 and i35 and seem to get 3-4 bars of lte and my fastest speed test was 14.3 mbps which is actually a little disappointing see how my best friends HTC 3d with 1 bar of wimax beside my phone is getting between 9-11 mbps

I went near that location and did a battery pull there - lo and behold, got a LTE signal. 21Mbps down

 

I now need to figure out why I don't get a signal at home (that is indicated as being covered by LTE at sprint.com/coverage) - maybe they haven't turned that on that antenna/tower yet?

Hmm... I did a profile and PRL update this morning and had LTE connectivity for about 10 seconds, then back to 3G. I might need to call Sprint.

I think their maps are extremely liberal in showing coverage. I think our members are better served by using our Completed NV Sites Map in the Sponsor section.

Market launches are scheduled around 40% site completion. Sprint will continue deploying more and more sites for better and better coverage every week until the market is 100% complete.

 

Sprint launched early so at least the sites that are completed now can be used. No sense in letting them sit around until the whole market is done.

Although we cannot rule out a device problem, I think for many people it is a signal strength issue. If you get a mediocre LTE signal, it is defaulting back to a stronger 3G. However, a weak LTE signal is better than a strong 3G signal in most cases. I think Sprint and the OEMs need to do some work on their transition thresholds.

Thanks Robert. I didn't realize that.

In the past, their coverage maps were pretty accurate - they showed(/show) Wimax coverage till about 3 houses over, and that was dead on. I could cross the street and watch the Wimax disappear on my EVO 3D! lol!

 

Hopefully, their actual coverage will match the coverage maps soon. (with LTE, the coverage maps shows LTE signal all around me - it is not on the edge of coverage like it was/is with Wimax). I'll try to ask Sprint customer care in a week or two if coverage doesn't change.

I picked up a 4G LTE signal at a Jewel-Osco in Naperville, IL. I was pretty surprised since LTE isn't supposed to be active in our area yet.

I remember my signal bars being full, but don't recall any specifics. I might take another drive out there as it is only ~10 min away from my place.

 

EDIT: Drove out there and the signal is pretty strong. Attached screen shot.

How can I force LTE? I have the Samsung Galaxy S3. I updated network settings to LTE/CDMA and it rebooted when I first got the phone, however I have not picked up LTE. I was at the Atlanta airport for 2 hours on 7/15 (no LTE) and drove pass the Jewel mentioned above (no LTE).

This is off topic, so you may be better off posting a new thread. However, setting the modem to LTE/CDMA should be all you need to do. I didn't do anything special to get on LTE. Also note that there are several Jewel-Oscos in Naperville (this is the one on IL-59 near Dominicks). The tower itself is actually along side the highway on the Western side just north of 95th street).

I have my Evo 4G LTE in Network Mode in LTE/CDMA yet 4G doesn't automatically connect. If I switch to CDMA Only and then back to LTE/CDMA, it will connect to 4G. I have also been able to get 4G to connect by turning off the Mobile Network and then back on. Is this an issue with Sprint's network, my phone, or is that the way it is suppose to be?

I don't remember having these types of issues with my original Evo when WiMax was just being launched. I almost feel that if the device isn't next to an LTE blow-torch, it doesn't stay connected. The only time I was connected for any reasonable amount of time, I had full signal. If I even have as low as half, the device switches to 3G.

I do remember having some issues with Wimax on the OG evo connecting with low signal strength. It seemed liked after having Wimax in my area for awhile, they changed the threshold that would allow Wimax to connect and stay connected.
