  1. LTE seems to be down across the western suburbs. Nothing from Dupage to Lake counties is working for me. Full bars 4G showing, no connectivity to be had.
  2. Does anyone have an idea of when (or if) the hole around Wheaton is going to get some improved coverage? I get good 4G to the north, south, east and west of Wheaton, but for some reason, the bandwidth in Wheaton itself is really awful. It's actually kind of funny: the moment you cross the town line on Roosevelt, coverage drops to near zero. Wheaton has a history of throwing up red tape when it comes to infrastructure upgrades (see: Xfinity, power grid etc), I hope this isn't another example of NIMBYism.
  3. Wheaton remains a black hole for me, which is frustrating as I'm frequently there. Full 4G through Schaumburg, Palatine and Lake Cook road now, though. That's awesome.
  4. Was staying in the Boston Harbor Hotel over the weekend. I saw 4G (8-9 mbps) in my room, but not in the lobby. Got 4G in the middle of Quincy Market (yes, I was a tourist).
  5. Seeing shreds of LTE more broadly these days. I had a good connection just outside of Woodfield this weekend. Testing continues in Glen Ellyn, Wheaton, Warrenville, Lisle etc. I see 4G from time to time along Roosevelt (which otherwise remains a black hole). Further north, all of Lake Cook Rd seems the be live now. Most of the 355/290/53 corridor remains LTE-free and weak for 3G.
  6. I followed the entire marathon around on my bike (family running in it) from the start north to Addison, back south and west to the United Center, south to the Cell and Chinatown and back up to Grant Park. I saw some spotty 4G out by UIC. Other than that flash of speed, I can attest to the fact that Sprint is simply terrible in Chicago city limits right now. Particularly shocking: I was unable to get a data connection of any sort in most of Streeterville and River North. The terrible coverage is understandable as Sprint is in the process of nuking their entire Chicago network right now, but it's definitely painful right now. I feel for you city folk.
  7. LTE active and 28 mbps down this morning in Glen Ellyn (Roosevelt and 355). I'll be happy to eat crow on my earlier words about the western suburbs if Sprint can serve this up across the burbs.
  8. In my experience, so far this NV/LTE roll-out continues to be a bust in the vast majority of the Chicagoland area. I had a busy weekend driving around and I didn't get a sniff of LTE anywhere in the western suburbs this weekend. In particular, Wheaton, Glen Ellyn, Warrenville, northern Naperville and parts of Lisle remain basically cell service holes on Sprint. In the vast majority of these areas, even 3G remains unreliable and incredibly slow, let alone LTE. I ran several speed tests and saw on average at most 0.3mbps. Many places simply had no data coverage, as if this is 1992. This is a wide swath of area with a couple hundred thousand local people. Also, the entire 355/290/53 corridor remains spotty in 3G coverage (although better than Wheaton et al) and completely LTE-free, even through densely developed Schaumburg. IMO, this is unacceptable. I really hope the situation starts to improve soon in the western suburbs. I don't recommend Sprint in Chicago if you're up for contract renewal.
  9. Signal strength steady at RSRP: -84dBm, same as yesterday.
  10. My local cell seems to have toned things down a bit today. Servers in both Chicago and Arlington Heights.
  11. This has been my experience as well. I'm not doing anything to log on to LTE, the phone takes at least 30 seconds to switch over though. I was watching the LTE Engineering screen this morning while it logged on. Sidenote: I'm on LTE the entire time I'm at work and I've seen basically no hit to battery life. It helps that I have a very strong signal. This was a major concern of mine (perhaps an invalid concern) in moving to LTE.
  12. Serving cell: 07E34300 RSRP: -84dBm Uploaded with ImageShack.us
  13. Not sure I appreciate the perceived snideness of this post, but I take your point. I don't know what tower I'm on.
  14. West of the tri-state. Don't want to narrow it down too much as then you'll know where I work...
  15. I'm consistently getting 20+ megs down, full bars 4G on Lake Cook Rd today. Pretty excited about this.
  16. Drove up the Tri State from 88 to Lake Cook just to try something different. There is essentially no backhaul the entire way: full bars, zero data from Oakbrook to Deerfield. It took Rdio twenty minutes to buffer one lousy song. As far as I can tell, data is at an absolute trickle throughout the vast majority of Chicagoland, to the point where there effectively is no network. It has been this way since at least April. This is getting outrageous, Sprint. Speed up the rollout.
  17. I think it was mentioned as part of the upgrade. Anyway, problem solved. Roaming issue persists here in Chicago, I think related to NV.
  18. This is exactly my experience. Now, mix in constant dropped calls. Basically the entire 355-290-53 (I hate how this road has three names) stretch from Ogden all the way up to Lake-Cook Rd is completely nuked and unreliable at this time if you're driving. Unforetunately, this is my commute. Last night and this morning, it seems to have hit a nadir. I tried to call my brother on the way home and the call dropped 5 times in about 15 mnutes and was terrible quality when I had a signal. I had to give up. Meanwhile, Rdio and Pandora remain completely unusable, despite the phone showing full bars. Backhaul update in progress?
  19. My recent experience: coverage along Lake Cook Rd. through Wheeling, Buffalo Grove and Deerfield has basically been trashed this week. No bars, no "3G" icon. Data very, very slow to non-existant. Voice calls don't really work. Schaumburg seems to be working a bit better, I've seen 3G data speeds up to 2mbps along 355. Bloomingdale, Carol Stream are working better as well (as noted above) Further south, Roosevelt through Glen Ellyn, Wheaton etc to West Chicago remains very spotty. Crazy signal readings: no bars, five bars, back to no bars etc. Butterfield is also a mess from Oakbrook all the way to Batavia. Hopefully this is the low point for western suburbs, it's obviously driving me crazy.
  20. I started noticing real problems along rt 290 in the Schaumburg area in late February / early March. It has now spread and the performance in most of DuPage county is erratic and unreliable right now. I live in Wheaton and commute to Deerfield, performance is now substantially worse along then entire route than it was a few months ago. I'm not doing anything particularly bandwidth consuming, but the network can't seem to handle even these low-end tasks. Again, I'm well aware of the reasons for the problems, but as a consumer paying a lot of money for the service I'm not sure I can cut Sprint any slack. Looking forward to September.
  21. I'm at the end of my rope with this situation at this point. I'm going to call Sprint next week and ask for a partial refund or some other compensation. I feel as if I may have made a mistake re-upping with them. I know that I should be an "educated consumer" and read this site and understand that good stuff is (apparently) coming, but at this point I don't really care. Based on the results I've seen to date, the Chicagoland rollout of the new Sprint network has been handled in the most bungled, half-assed way possible. The network is extremely erratic and often completely non-functional in the entire Chicagoland area. Heaven forbid I try to stream music from Play or Rdio. God help me if I try to load up a heavy page like The Verge. Did Sprint think that consumers wouldn't notice that they don't really have a functioning network in Chicago at this point and apparently won't for several months? What was their contingency plan? Were they hoping people just wouldn't complain? I'm sure Fight Club's recall equation applies in this situation. Suffice it to say, I'm not encouraged to believe that the LTE rollout will be handled well. At this point, there's not much I can do except continue to use wifi for all data-intensive tasks and sync as much media as possible to the phone to avoid streaming when on the move. Everyone I've talked to who's on Sprint here in Chicago has (of course) the same issues. Many have complained and received some sort of compensation. I'm going to go the same route. Meanwhile, I'll continue to stare at my friends who are paying (out the nose) for Verizon and lust over their rock-solid LTE. My wife's up for renewal next month, not sure what to do.

    HTC EVO 4G LTE

To echo some other comments here, I've experienced three niggling little bugs on this launch ROM: 1. Auto time update issue 2. Random "roaming" warnings 3. Wifi (very rarely) a bit shaky Overall, it's still an awesome phone. Also, it's worth noting that this initial build is still much more stable and less problematic than the launch ROM on the initial OG Evo 4G (which was a bit of a nightmare). Over time, HTC really improved that ROM, the final 2.3 build was very smooth. Hopefully these small launch issues will be solved soon. At this point, we just need widespread LTE here in Chicagoland. The entire Sprint network is essentially non-functional right now in wide swaths of this area. It's kind of pissing me off.
  23. Just thought I'd comment on my experiences. I commute in the western suburbs and have had ridiculously bad data and voice experiences in the past few weeks. Data often slows to a trickle or completely stops. Calls drop constantly (although they sound much better than my OG Evo, not sure if it's the phone or the new network). I've noticed it's particularly bad in the Schaumburg area. I stream Rdio while driving and it's become almost unusable while driving in certain areas out here if you're moving between cells. This site has now explained the problem to me. Seems like we're basically stuck here until the network refresh is done which is kind of unacceptable for something as expensive as cellphone service. I like a lot of things about the Evo 4G LTE, but the Sprint network has really hurt enjoyment of my first week. Looking forward to a much better experience shortly. And I hope it is shortly because this is a bit annoying.
