  1. I bought the techarmor one from amazon - a few bucks more than the nillkin, but it is so amazing (compared to the plastic ones that I've used in the past). Techarmor's customer service was surprisingly good! There were a couple of spots at the bottom of the screen after the install - I'm sure it was not dust/dirt (it looked like bad glue perhaps?) Anyway, I Emailed them and after sending them a picture of what I was talking about, they replaced it in a few days! Pleasantly surprised. (I'm sure the nillkin one is just as good - I haven't tried it) I think the best part about the glass protector is that it is so easy to clean! The plastic one would get smudgy and needed a microfiber cloth to clean. With this glass protector, I can wipe it against my T-shirt and it is spotless in a second or two! This, along with the dbrand back - perfect combination for me
  2. Sorry... You are right. I meant LTE (recommended) vs 3G
  3. I do have xposed and gravitybox /xprivacy installed, but after 4.4.3 update, I didn't install anything outside of play store for 3 days or so.. And got the same results. Not sure if any of those would cause this, but am happy to try removing those.
  4. I'm no expert, so I don't know why it makes a difference, but it does. Battery drain, when my phone is set to LTE only, versus 3g only (even with mobile data/WiFi off, and phone left untouched overnight - 8 hours) is very different. It didn't make a difference till 4.4.3/4.4.4. Well, actually, that's not entirely true - when the tower nearest to me wasn't up/running, my phone would hold a weak LTE signal from a distant tower, and my battery life would be miserable even then (when it was set to LTE only versus 3g). After the tower was brought up a few months ago, LTE signal strength improved significantly (approx -95dBm, versus -108dBm or worse earlier), and this problem went away - till 4.4.3 update screwed it up. Edit: I meant LTE (recommended) vs 3G setting
  5. Just to recap, at night, I usually turn off mobile data and WiFi (phone would be on the LTE only setting instead of 3g). And my battery drain (before 4.4.3 update) was 1-2% After 4.4.3 (and now, with 4.4.4), battery drain has gone up to 15% or so - with identical situation (Android OS/Phone Idle take up that - no wakelocks to speak of). Based on an earlier suggestion in this thread, I switched to 3g only setting (again, leaving mobile data/WiFi off), and now, battery drain is 1-2% only. This is helping with battery life in the daytime too, but that means that I can either sacrifice battery life for better data speed, or sacrifice data speed for battery life... UGH! I don't have an airave, so not connecting to it at all Edit: sorry, I meant LTE (recommended) vs 3G setting
  6. Dayum.... Switched to 3g only last night after full charge and battery was at 98% this morning. Ugh.. So I need to stay 3g to get better battery life or lose battery to get better data speeds on LTE.. Grrr
  7. Using signal check pro, yes. Again, I'm not complaining about this. The whole thing started because of a suggestion to disable band 26 to debug the battery drain :-) This thread is not to discuss signal issues, so I think we should not be derailing the topic :-) Thanks for the feedback though
  8. The towers near my home, and work and parks/malls that I go to supposedly have all been upgraded to 800. In building penetration however is no better, at least in my case. Sorry, I didn't mean to sound like a whiner or to turn this into a "sprint sux" post. Just stating what I noticed hoping that things improve soon.
  9. Well, you must realize that the 30/4 is only when I went looking for the so called turbo spark speed. Yes 30/4 on a mobile device is sufficient (at least now) but the speeds I get 99% of the time are significantly lower. The other point I trying to make is that even the turbo spark (as per sprint) is really not comparable to other carriers in real life... Yet. And Spark itself was supposed to be better than other carriers. Building penetration? Ha.. Sorry, that's a joke with our carrier. I'm in the Dallas metro area.
  10. My N5 is rooted, and I have tasker (along with secure settings), but not sure how to make it switch between 3g only and LTE modes. Do you have any pointers on how to access that setting?
  11. No - I did a profile/PRL update today manually (just as a precaution), but didn't get anything from Sprint.
  12. Switching to 3g only every night and switching to LTE in the mornings is going to be a pain in the <you know what>. B26 isn't giving me any amazing speeds anyway - the best I've gotten (in a "turbo spark" area in Dallas) is 30Mbps/4Mbps . In my home area that is "Spark" enabled, I get 6/2 Thank heavens for WiFi. In the night, I usually turn data/Wifi off anyway, so I don't care for 3g/LTE. But I just don't want the battery draining like this even with no active usage. So, I think I'll try switching B26 off and see if that makes a difference. If not, I'll try 3g only. If that doesn't work either, I will try hopping on one foot, while rotating the phone in circles around my head
  13. Hmm - I did notice that my phone now connects to B26 (instead B25 on 4.4.2). But during the daytime, I haven't had any problems with making/receiving calls yet. Good idea though - I'll try it out tonight.
  14. Oh gosh - there are so many pages - hard to go thru' all Let me apologize in advance if this was already addressed in an earlier post After 4.4.3 update, I'm seeing significantly higher battery drain (overnight, with Wifi/Data disconnected, idle). No wakelocks to speak of. Phone Idle and cell standby seem to be the biggest hogs. Screen prints of relevant screens at http://imgur.com/a/ZvYYr Post 4.4.3 update, battery drains from 100% to 85% or so overnight. Before that, it would go from 100% to 98% or so. (both with no usage, data/wifi off, reboot right after 100% charging at 10pm, leave it untouched till 6am) Tried switch to airplane mode last night, and battery stayed at 98%. Is it the new radio that's causing this drain? (Signal strength seems to have improved - showing -93dBm on average now - versus -105dBm or worse with 4.4.2)
  15. naw... based on the past, odds are it will be on xda long before the downloadable factory image is available from google
  16. you mean "when I see it on XDA's site", right?
  17. I've had this issue in my area as well. It looks like it is something to do with the network (not the phone). If I keep my phone on 3g only (even when I'm connected to WiFi), I never have this issue of missing calls. But occasionally, when I'm connected to LTE (again, also connected to WiFi), even with -90dBm or better signal strength, I miss calls. It happened fairly often in the past couple of months (but the tower near my work location was being upgraded). So, if that is happening very often, try to switch to the 3g radio and see if the problem goes away.
  18. ick - that is just not right. Overnight (10pm to 6am), my battery drops from 100% to 96-97%. With zero usage, any more drop is really unreasonable. I usually don't get many Emails in the night etc, so data usage is minimal as well. A few things that you could check in the morning (when you notice such drastic battery level drop): Battery usage (settings/battery) - what apps/processes used up the battery, and what percentage? For the top offenders, check how long they kept your CPU on Check if you are in a good cell coverage area. One other suggestion - after a full charge at night, just reboot your phone and see if that makes an improvement with the battery level in the morning.
  19. Users on another forum are reporting the same thing - http://forums.androidcentral.com/google-nexus-5/373755-youtube-app-draining-battery.html
  20. Thanks AJ. Done now - thanks That's what I was doing (kinda annoying) - but the problem is that unless i carry my phone in my hand all the time, I don't know if the area I'm in has decent LTE coverage or not - so I may be missing calls without knowing it. I (sadly) now have to keep my phone on 3g mode the whole time to get coverage most of the time. Even with that, there are places (which supposedly have good LTE coverage), where I get zero signal - no 3g, no LTE, no voice - doesn't even roam! While, my friends with other providers are getting great connectivity. I took my friend's T-mo SIM at one of these places and voila - everything works. Waiting patiently See #2 above. Issue occurs outside home too. See #2 above. Issue occurs outside home too. Again, thank you for your feedback, and apologies (again) for derailing this thread. I'll wait for my access to the maps to get approved.
  21. Thanks for that 'pep talk'. I think I needed that I do not have GV integration, so that's not it. I agree that it looks like a software issue (already replaced the phone to rule out antenna issues). For now, Sprint tech support doesn't have any suggestions, and insists that all towers in my neighborhood are working fine Sorry - didn't mean to derail this "Spark" related thread. I'll just stand by in envy of folks getting better data speeds...
  22. Thank you - I guess I'll wait for the spark update to get pushed out to my Nexus 5 then. Things are kinda messed up as it is. My house and surroundings (Dallas) are in full LTE coverage area (per Sprint maps) - sensorly confirms that as well. But when I enable LTE on my phone, the signal strength is horrible (RSRP of -110dBm or worse usually). At home, I really don't care about data speed because I'm on WiFi, but with LTE enabled (regardless of whether I have WiFi enabled or not), I end up missing calls often. Over on the Nexus5 thread, somebody had suggested switching to 3g only, and with that, I don't miss calls - but of course data speeds suck when I'm out and about (unless I go and switch to LTE each time - and then, keep an eye on LTE signal strength every so often to make sure it is not too low to cause missed calls. Was hoping that with the Spark being enabled in the Dallas area, maybe the problem would have gone away, but nope. Still the same. (even tried to enable the other bands and set 41 to priority 1 - no difference). Oh well... it has been a long 14 years with Sprint. I'll try to hang on for another year or so to see if they can get things to work (hopefully the T-mo deal will happen, and improve things - friends with T-mo get >20Mbps when they come over, while I get 0.8-1.2 Mbps at best (if the wind isn't blowing and it is not raining).
  23. Wouldn't enabling the two LTE bands have the same effect? (well, minus the "spark" icon) Or is there more to it? In Dallas, is there a way to see what areas in Dallas can expect to get benefit from this now? Sprint.com/coverage doesn't really say much about spark coverage
