Network Vision/LTE - Missouri Market (includes St. Louis)

Is there a Sprint tower near mile marker 37 on I-44? I noticed some work taking place on a tower at like 37.6 or something close to that. I didn't stop to look or ask questions since I was on my way to OK. It looked like the contractors have been making progress in the Joplin area. I was surprised to actually have signal near the OK/KS/MO border. My phone has dropped signal in that area for the last three years. The speeds on 3G weren't bad in the Joplin area...they sure do suck in Tulsa.

Here in south Tulsa/Broken Arrow, I haven't really had a problem with the 3G speeds so far. Haven't run any speeds tests, but have not had any trouble loading web pages and running searches on google maps. That would be impossible in Springfield.

Oh your welcome, my wife thought I was a big dork because I got all giddy when I found out all 3 towers are within 1-2 miles of our house.

CANT WAIT!

My partner does the exact same thing, when I want to go tower hunting he refers to the activity as a "nerd run" lol

They did some major bandaid fixes late last year but things have slowed down since then in many areas. Almost perfect timing in starting NV now so things stay usable in the future.

Ha, I wish STL would have been a lot faster along. At this rate, Sprint will be the last of the Big 4 to cover STL in LTE.

Verizon was there as a launch market late in 2010 before LTE phones were even available.

AT&T got there in April 2012.

T-Mobile? Who knows, but they're much farther along on modernization and 1900 refarming than the few sites in see in progress in STL. I'd give a cell count but airportal.de is down.

Update ! KC03RW209..near 52 South -- Versailles MO .(38.40889, -92.76167 ) is ready for sprint to Approve and Accept..

Question, I went to this site today and there are no panels, nor base station present. There is fiber ran to the site but that is it. Might check information again to make sure it is correct.

Thanks!

I live in St Charles and my guess is May to August. St Louis isn't even announced yet, Joplin (same Sprint market) was annouced Oct 12th and no signs of LTE nor reports of activity at Joplin towers yet

I think work will start in the STL area before the end of Winter.

Robert

You were right, just wish it was more sites showing more progress, but it is what it is and will come when it comes.

The Joplin area has 4 towers with confirmed LTE, and 4 more with all the equipment installed, just waiting to be turned on. Plus two more that are being worked on at this moment. Once all those are complete, Joplin will be nearly ready for an official launch, probably just one more tower on the northwest side of town and it will all be covered!

Can anyone point me to information specific to the STL area. Sometimes I have a hard time weeding through all the Joplin info to find info related to my actual area.

It's in the very early stages of prepping for deployment. It will not start to get moving there on a large scale for another few months. Stay tuned.

I can't even begin to imagine how difficult it would be to start work in the St. Louis metro area. The city and county are divorced entities, and the county is made up of tons of smaller municipalities. Securing permits alone for work in all of the areas must be a full-time job, independent of any construction.

At any rate, my contract is up in October, so I'm hoping to have a shiny new iPhone with LTE to play with in the St. Louis area. :)

So was drving home from lunch, and they must have had one of the towers near South Rangeline up, showed 4G on my phone.

Ran a quick speed test and pulled 11mbps down and 10mbps up! :D

But lost the signal or they turned it off as soon as I got the the parking lot at work :(

Was it in an area that's not mapped on Sensorly yet?

I had LTE all over east and south Joplin yesterday from the three towers (Web City, SW I-44, and S on Range Line) that are already on.

Is there a way to tell which tower we are connected to?

The only reliable way is to look in the LTE engineering screen at the cell ids, and then the only way to know is to do some foot work.

There is no reliable app, or any info that will tell you exactly which site you are connected to without doing some leg work. There is a good thread on here on how to do that, Digiblur put it up. Let me see if I can find it.

    • In the conference call they had two question on additional spectrum. One was the 800 spectrum. They are not certain what will happen, thus have not really put it into their plans either way (sale or no sale). They do have a reserve level. Nationwide 800Mhz is seen as great for new technologies which I presume is IOT or 5g slices.  T-Mobile did not bite on use of their c-band or DOD.  mmWave rapidly approaching deadlines not mentioned at all. FWA brushes on this as it deals with underutilized spectrum on a sector by sector basis.  They are willing to take more money to allow FWA to be mobile (think RV or camping). Unsure if this represents a higher priority, for example, FWA Mobile in RVs in Walmart parking lots working where mobile phones need all the capacity. In terms of FWA capacity, their offload strategy is fiber through joint ventures where T-Mobile does the marketing, sales, and customer support while the fiber company does the network planning and installation.  50%-50% financial split not being consolidated into their books. I think discussion of other spectrum would have diluted the fiber joint venture discussion. They do have a fund which one use is to purchase new spectrum. Sale of the 800Mhz would go into this. It should be noted that they continue to buy 2.5Ghz spectrum from schools etc to replace leases. They will have a conference this fall  to update their overall strategies. Other notes from the call are 75% of the phones on the network are 5g. About 85% of their sites have n41, n25, and n71, 90% 5g.  93% of traffic is on midband.  SA is also adding to their performance advantage, which they figure is still ahead of other carriers by two years. It took two weeks to put the auction 108 spectrum to use at their existing sites. Mention was also made that their site spacing was designed for midrange thus no gaps in n41 coverage, while competitors was designed for lowband thus toggles back and forth for n77 also with its shorter range.
    • The manual network selection sounds like it isn't always scanning NR, hence Dish not showing up. Your easiest way to force Dish is going to be forcing the phone into NR-only mode (*#*#4636#*#* menu?), since rainbow sims don't support SA on T-Mobile.
    • "The company’s unique multi-layer approach to 5G, with dedicated standalone 5G deployed nationwide across 600MHz, 1.9GHz, and 2.5GHz delivers customers a consistently strong experience, with 85% of 5G traffic on sites with all three spectrum bands deployed." Meanwhile they are very close to a construction deadline June 1 for 850Mhz of mmWave in most of Ohio covering 27500-28350Mhz expiring 6/8/2028. No reported sightings.  Buildout notice issue sent by FCC in March 5, 2024 https://wireless2.fcc.gov/UlsApp/letterPdf/LetterPdfController?licId=4019733&letterVersionId=178&autoLetterId=13060705&letterCode=CR&radioServiceCode=UU&op=LetterPdf&licSide=Y&archive=null&letterTo=L  No specific permits seen in a quick check of Columbus. They also have an additional 200Mhz covering at 24350-25450 Mhz and 24950-25050Mhz with no buildout date expiring 12/11/2029.

They're completely avoiding talking about mmWave.
