Okay people, not to defend meteorologist because I'm the first one to say they are the only profession where they can be wrong 100% of the time and still have a job, but lets be fair and real here.

In regards to NYC,

Ok. You brought up my most hated phrase in existence (second only maybe to 'how about that global warming huh?"). Meteorologists are never. Never wrong 100% of the time. Not even 50% of the time. 70-90% of the time 48 hour forecasts are more or less correct. That number varies on the region, but if we were wrong 50% of the time, you can bet we would be out of a job.

1-yeah they may have over-hyped it a bit, but its better to be safe than sorry. First if I am not mistaken they were using an existing model that predicted such high totals. There is a newer model that I believe CNN was also testing that hit the numbers right on the mark and they said that they will be using that from now on.

Not sure where that came from... CNN doesn't have any models that they own. The Weather Channel doesn't even have their own forecast model. They may be referring to the RPM, which is owned by WSI, but it was still giving NYC 20-30 inches of snow up until about 9pm last night. Then it came to reality and dropped numbers off significantly west of central Long Island.

Regardless, I rather have them be a bit over hyped and scare us than not. There are countless stories of idiots not heeding the warnings of not going out, driving etc and getting stuck, into accidents that make it hard to clear the streets of snow, no matter how much fell.

Agree to that

2-Yeah Manhattan didn't get much and most news is reporting on that one place. woopie freaking do. NYC is not just Manhattan, there are 4 other boroughs that are larger and got hit much harder. Shoot, here in Queens I took out a ruler and it was exactly 19 inches. And that's not counting the snow drifts. Granted, 19 inches is nothing compared to places like the northwest, but they are used to it. Over here 2 inches  and folks freak out like roaches scattering when the lights go on.

Funny how that works, isn't it. It missed Manhattan, so it's a totally busted forecast right?! Ha.

Just to say the models they have are made from humans. Humans make mistake so what. If they did not shut down these things, and the storm was worse and people died, then they would still get crap. Here in Texas for example We can be scheduled for 2 inches of rain and it be 34 degrees outside. And the model think The temperatures will drop to below 32, but dont. So instead of a crippling Ice storm, we get all rain, or reverse. The forecast rely on going certain routes. If a storm is 50 miles west or east the impacts are worse or less in some areas. But I have learned Winter storms can be very difficult to predict, especially here in Texas where 1-2 degrees can be the difference between shut down the city, and cold rains.

Well. If it snowed in south Florida, half the population would just die the second snow hit. Fortunately, we are just getting a ton of wind and beautiful blue sky's. People down south where I used to live were out boating today lol...

Welp, it wasn't that bad. Shoveling snow out of my driveway for the second time in the same week sucked, but at least this time I didn't do it alone (one of my roommates helped out, which made it much quicker and easier). I only saw 4 inches of snow where I was, so I didn't get much of the fabled "20-40 inches of snow" we were originally supposed to get.

ok I admit, that 100% is a over-hyped, sorry. It should be 90%  :P

I kid, I kid,

And yeah I do remember the weather guy saying something about RPM, but can't for the life of me remember what the other model was. Either way, both models got Boston correct. If it wasn't because Mother nature pushed the storm 25 miles east, it would be a totally different story here in NYC.

Personally I just don't see how folks out in the upper mid west deal with it.

Yeah, I like my models made from humans.

They are better than those Japanese robot women.

Us Midwesterners laugh when it snows down south. Like every year when Atlanta gets 1" of snow or a few tenths of an inch of ice, the whole city shuts down, cars get abandoned on roads, and people die. It always looks like a scene from "The Walking Dead" on the news.

I saw a guy dressed like Bigfoot walking down Washington St. in Boston yesterday during the storm. Everybody in the coffee shop was taking his picture.

For the weather, wrong mythological creature.  Yeti or abominable snowman.

    • Since this is kind of the general chat thread, I have to share this humorous story (at least it is to me): Since around February/March of this year, my S22U has been an absolute pain to charge. USB-C cables would immediately fall out and it progressively got worse and worse until it often took me a number of minutes to get the angle of the cable juuuussst right to get charging to occur at all (not exaggerating). The connection was so weak that even walking heavily could cause the cable to disconnect. I tried cleaning out the port with a stable, a paperclip, etc. Some dust/lint/dirt came out but the connection didn't improve one bit. Needless to say, this was a MONSTER headache and had me hating this phone. I just didn't have the finances right now for a replacement.  Which brings us to the night before last. I am angry as hell because I had spent five minutes trying to get this phone to charge and failed. I am looking in the port and I notice it doesn't look right. The walls look rough and, using a staple, the back and walls feel REALLY rough and very hard. I get some lint/dust out with the staple and it improves charging in the sense I can get it to charge but it doesn't remove any of the hard stuff. It's late and it's charging, so that's enough for now. I decide it's time to see if that hard stuff is part of the connector or not. More aggressive methods are needed! I work in a biochem lab and we have a lot of different sizes of disposable needles available. So, yesterday morning, while in the lab I grab a few different sizes of needles between 26AWG and 31 AWG. When I got home, I got to work and start probing the connector with the 26 AWG and 31 AWG needle. The stuff feels extremely hard, almost like it was part of the connector, but a bit does break off. Under examination of the bit, it's almost sandy with dust/lint embedded in it. It's not part of the connector but instead some sort of rock-hard crap! That's when I remember that I had done some rock hounding at the end of last year and in January. This involved lots of digging in very sandy/dusty soils; soils which bare more than a passing resemblance to the crap in the connector. We have our answer, this debris is basically compacted/cemented rock dust. Over time, moisture in the area combined with the compression from inserting the USB-C connector had turned it into cement. I start going nuts chiseling away at it with the 26 AWG needle. After about 5-10 minutes of constant chiseling and scraping with the 26AWG and 31AWG needles, I see the first signs of metal at the back of the connector. So it is metal around the outsides! Another 5 minutes of work and I have scraped away pretty much all of the crap in the connector. A few finishing passes with the 31AWG needle, a blast of compressed air, and it is time to see if this helped any. I plug my regular USB-C cable and holy crap it clicks into place; it hasn't done that since February! I pick up the phone and the cable has actually latched! The connector works pretty much like it did over a year ago, it's almost like having a brand new phone!
    • That's odd, they are usually almost lock step with TMO. I forgot to mention this also includes the September Security Update.
    • 417.55 MB September security update just downloaded here for S24+ unlocked   Edit:  after Sept security update install, checked and found a 13MB GP System update as well.  Still showing August 1st there however.
    • T-Mobile is selling the rest of the 3.45GHz spectrum to Columbia Capital.
    • Still nothing for my AT&T and Visible phones.
