Google Hangouts w/Voice (Was Google Voice)

I feel the complete opposite. The G Voice app is awful, slow, buggy, and has not been updated in ages. Hangouts on the other hand gets updated regularly, and is the only chat platform I use other than SMS (and I use it for SMS now too!)

That means all my communication is in a single app. Hangouts now also has the ability to send and receive SMS over data (which GV ofc already had) BUT it can also place and receive calls over data. This would have been super helpful when I was in WV recently skiing and Sprint had literally 0 service within 30 mins of the mountain, not even roaming, but our cabin had WiFi. Everyone with me was using calling over hangouts from my laptop because their verizon phones did not work either, this would have been much more convenient over my phone.

I also use the hangouts chrome extension to talk to people all day in my computer, now I will be able to get SMS and respond right through that extension too, instead of having to go to the GV website.

But we all have our own opinions :)

have you ever tried the google voice chrome extension?

don't get me wrong. Google Voice moving to Hangouts is a good idea, but... why is it updated so much... BUG FIXES. :-)

I watch for Hangout updates.. once I see that the update has been I released, I install it and give it a try. it always fails!

the last update from 2 days ago... hangs up when I search for my contacts. the Hangouts Dialer... always shows a message indicating I need to update Hangouts to the current version, even though I have updated to the latest versions.

Bottom line.. Hangouts is NOT ready to replace Google Voice.

I work in IT... in the tech world...SOMETIMES... "If it Ain't broke, don't fix it." :-)

Yes, the old Google Voice is old and visually unappealing. But for me... it works Perfect! I won't switch to Hangouts until all the bugs are fixed and/or I am forced to by Google, when ever they retire the old App.

VoLTE worked fantastically this evening through integrated Hangouts. Call was crystal clear - possibly more so than regular calls - and I received an E-mail while the call was ongoing, all while walking around town with Wi-Fi turned off. Color me impressed.

If you've been one of those people disappointed by the lack of SVLTE on Sprint, this would seem to be a great workaround.

my setup works almost perfect, here is something you can try, if you are having problems.

1. first, you don't need a GV# to set this up the integration. it's okay if you do, you just don't need one.

2. call sprint an ask them to add Google Voice integration on your number.

3. After Sprint says they have added GV Integration, log into your sprint account from a computer to verify that it shows GV Integration.

4. From your smartphone, go to settings and Update Profile.

5. login to your Gmail account.

6. go to Google.com/Voice and try the GV Sprint Integration.

this process worked for all five of my Sprint lines.

I can't promise it will work, because perhaps the new Sprint plans don't support GV.

Haven't received the update either. Is the common denominator Google Voice integration?

If so, that's rather telling...

No - I've been integrated for years and I received the Hangouts update lat last night. But I don't think I was ever offered the option to "fully" integrate. That is, my Google Voice app still functions as always.

Not sure what you mean by "fully" integrate.

I never received a message in Hangouts and/or Google Voice, asking me to merge them together, which other people were reporting before Google rolled the whole thing back: http://www.droid-life.com/2014/09/11/dont-stress-if-you-didnt-get-asked-to-merge-hangouts-and-google-voice/

Ah. I thought you were referring to Google Voice integration. Got it.

I just tried this while chatting with sprint. They were not able to figure it out and gave me a number to technical support. I wonder if it has anything to do with me being on Android L.

Yeah, I can to send texts with data on hangouts when not Sprint GV integrated, but once Sprint GV integration is enabled, I lose the ability to text over data. It still works with the GV app though.

It seems like they had an oversight or something.

Edit: And its been a pain going back and forth with all of this, so I'd recommend anyone who is Sprint integrated to just hang tight until Google fixes this. It takes customer service calls to get GV integration back most of the time it seems.

It installed. I haven't noticed anything different. Still haven't gotten the Hangouts update.

I made a backup of the old app, but I'll probably wait til the morning or when I get the new hangouts app too. I really want voip but breaking SMS and mms would really suck.

Anyone see this? Hardware that supports gvoice. You can use your home phone with this.

This is a gvoice engineers g+ post on it. He also talks about the hangouts integration issues if you want to follow him.

I too just called sprint and they seemed to think I had 3 heads.  I have received the update GV app but not the Hangouts update.  I thought I would try the integration as i had it enabled once before as I thought the quality was sub par.  I then tried going to the Google voice website to try it from there but it said my number was not eligible for integration.  Apparently if you have a business account you can't enable integration.

What is the process for GVI?  Does Sprint have to be involved or just on the

Google side of things?  BTW, I love how hangouts is working so far..hands down

best wifi calling (so far that is) that I've experienced...
