Wifi calling

Saw your posts. Had to offer my experience. I posted a few days ago in the Sprint Users forum.

I have a Galaxy S4 (720T), received the WiFi calling update early in the morning a yesterday.

I tested extensively the last two days. It works awesome!

Calls I made were clear. Other party says they hear me fine.

You setup your S4 to any WiFi you connect to individually. So the S4 won't automatically use WiFi calling when you are connected to a WiFi..the first time..you have to deliberately enable WiFi calling on the WiFi of you wish to use for WiFi calling.

Once that is done..the next time you attach to that WiFi..within 15secs..the S4 says WiFi Calling is now enabled on "What Ever WiFi.." Your voice signal drops off and now you are fully ready to use your S4 via WiFi.

Also..the update description said that once you connect to a WiFi with WiFi calling..the text messages go through the WiFi as well.

I see the activity over WiFi calling when I type "usage." It tells me how many minutes I used for WiFi calling and how many texts i sent via WiFi calling.

Another benefit..I no longer need my Airave.. I will keep it for my kids..but the Airave doesn't come into play.

Once I roll into my garage and my S4 connects to my home WiFi I am good. The Airave is not used at that point. Its awesome..I used to have to enable CDMA mode only when I got home so my Airave will be stable..now I just leave LTE mode on all the time.

Its really a freaking awesome update!! All the dead spots at my job are no longer a factor..WiFi is all over the two building where I work. I setup my S4 to use WiFi calling on all the WiFi.. Now I have no dead spots at my job..

Again..a really cool Sprint update.

GREAT contribution to the S4GRU knowledge base. Very good description of what you did and what result you had.

Glad to see that this works well. The Sprint network is getting better every day, but there will always be spots that will not be covered, so having this ability and knowing it works well is a big plus.   Thanks for your efforts and the posting.

Yes, that goes without saying. But I tested that as well. It holds the call as long as it can, then when no WiFi is available it disconnects the call.

I assume the call drops if you initiate the call in your home and drive off in your car?

So, this update is a lot more than wifi calling its HTC sense 6 and power saving as well. A lot earlier than anticipated!

Just make sure you have wifi calling on your account. That seems to solve the issue for most people.

I have the S4T with the wifi calling update and have never been able to get it to work despite 3 factory resets, and doing just about everything else anyone can come up with to try to get it to work. When I click on wifi calling, it goes to a self service screen, I hit "proceed" and then it tells me the activation cannot be completed over the phone and to take the phone to a Sprint store or to call customer service. I never even get to the point to accept the terms and conditions. It's been frustrating.

I'm waiting on a call from an upper level tech support person. I was told it could take 72 hours for a call back. I'm not holding my breath though. Every time a company ever says they will call back, they pretty much never do. I'll post back if Sprint ever figures out why it's not working on my phone.

The feature is not broken..I have the same version of S4, the 720T. I use WiFi calling all the time. It works flawlessly.

I thought you got that issued fixed. How can I help?

No, never had it working. I've seriously tried everything and can't get past the same screen every time.

I suspect that sprint is pushing wifi calling feature as a pre-cursor to volte/voip.

Getting the bugs etc worked out early using an optional service instead of later as volte gets rolled out.

In fact, I wish they would just enable wifi calling to also work over lte, and give us data only plans and be done with it.

I realize that won't happen any time soon.

Pretty disappointed this thread isn't updated more often with news of Sprint announcing more phones getting WiFi Calling. I was hoping this would be something that Sprint would really put some effort behind.

Sure did, back on the 18th.

I would have more confidence in this rollout if they added it as a "Key Feature" on the smartphone page at Sprint.com like they do for Direct Connect. You could just select the check box and see all the phones that supported it. I dunno, it just gives me the feeling that Wifi Calling is a bastard child at HQ

Anything that can reduce the number of Airave units that retentions gives away is a good thing.

What's wrong with Airave?

Annoying issues. Phone not preferring to connect to the airave over the site down the street which results in my phone constantly searching for signal and killing my battery. Other than that, nothing. Probably because I have an iPhone. iPhones don't seem to do well with airaves

My son has an iphone 5, and he doesnt have any issues with connecting. However, if you disable 4G when you are home, thst should lock into your Airave.. Go to settings/cellular...then disable LTE with slide bar, reboot and iphone should lock into Airave.

    • Excuse my rookie comments here, but after enabling *#73#, it seems that the rainbow sim V2? requires n70 (I turned it off along with n71 - was hoping to track n66) to be available else it switches to T-Mobile.  So this confirms my suspicion that you need to be close to a site to get on Dish.  Have no idea why they don't just use plmn. To test, I put it into a s21 ultra, rebooted twice, came up on T-Mobile (no n70 on s21).  Tried to manually register on 313340, but it did not connect (tried twice). I am on factory unlocked firmware but used a s22 hack to get *#73# working.  Tried what you were suggesting with a T-Mobile sim partially installed, but that was very unstable with Dish ( I think they had figured that one out).  [edit: and now I see Boost sent me a successful device swap notice which says I can now begin to use my new device.  Sigh.  Will try again later and wait for this message - too impatient.]
    • Hopefully this indicates T-Mobile hasn't completely abandoned mmwave and/or small cells? But then again this is the loop, so take that as you will. Hopefully now that most macro activity is done (besides rural colo/builds), they will start working on small cells.
    • This has been approved.. https://www.cnet.com/tech/mobile/fcc-approves-t-mobiles-deal-to-purchase-mint-mobile/
    • In the conference call they had two question on additional spectrum. One was the 800 spectrum. They are not certain what will happen, thus have not really put it into their plans either way (sale or no sale). They do have a reserve level. Nationwide 800Mhz is seen as great for new technologies which I presume is IOT or 5g slices.  T-Mobile did not bite on use of their c-band or DOD.  mmWave rapidly approaching deadlines not mentioned at all. FWA brushes on this as it deals with underutilized spectrum on a sector by sector basis.  They are willing to take more money to allow FWA to be mobile (think RV or camping). Unsure if this represents a higher priority, for example, FWA Mobile in RVs in Walmart parking lots working where mobile phones need all the capacity. In terms of FWA capacity, their offload strategy is fiber through joint ventures where T-Mobile does the marketing, sales, and customer support while the fiber company does the network planning and installation.  50%-50% financial split not being consolidated into their books. I think discussion of other spectrum would have diluted the fiber joint venture discussion. They do have a fund which one use is to purchase new spectrum. Sale of the 800Mhz would go into this. It should be noted that they continue to buy 2.5Ghz spectrum from schools etc to replace leases. They will have a conference this fall  to update their overall strategies. Other notes from the call are 75% of the phones on the network are 5g. About 85% of their sites have n41, n25, and n71, 90% 5g.  93% of traffic is on midband.  SA is also adding to their performance advantage, which they figure is still ahead of other carriers by two years. It took two weeks to put the auction 108 spectrum to use at their existing sites. Mention was also made that their site spacing was designed for midrange thus no gaps in n41 coverage, while competitors was designed for lowband thus toggles back and forth for n77 also with its shorter range.
    • The manual network selection sounds like it isn't always scanning NR, hence Dish not showing up. Your easiest way to force Dish is going to be forcing the phone into NR-only mode (*#*#4636#*#* menu?), since rainbow sims don't support SA on T-Mobile.
