Network Vision/LTE - Orange County Market (Anaheim/Santa Ana/Irvine/Huntington Beach)

Looks like there is some more testing going on in HB by GWC.  Picked up a little lte but I'll map more later.

That's true, I usually get a 4g lte signal while I'm bella terra, but it's not a strong signal. I even checked on the tower and they haven't installed the antennas yet.

I heard that somewhere in the forums I can find a map showing all the cell phone towers in an area regardless of if they have been upgraded. Does anyone know where the one for Orange County is? I would like to see it to see how far Sprint has come in our area and how many more to go there are. Any help is appreciated!

Thank you! Very interesting results. The two sites my phone connects to (per signal check) at my house are not actually on that map. Could this be the antennas reporting a wrong location?

Was at Angel Stadium last night, sitting in left field first row, green shirt, and man inside the stadium. I was only able to get 1xRTT. I don't know if it's because of my seating location or what, but service was brutal last night. I wasn't even getting eHRPD. Weird thing was, as soon as I entered the parking lot, I was getting eHRPD. Posted Image

It's not your seat location.  I go to at least 20 games a season.  During the first two months or so of the season LTE blanketed outside the stadium and the signal could be acquired in most levels.  The Club Level (300 sections) was the only area where LTE did not penetrate.

Somewhere around midseason LTE became non-existant.  3g speeds remained tolerable (i.e. approx 1mb up/down).

Then, around early August I noticed 3g speeds were slowing.  1x is the only consistent signal inside the stadium.  The last two homestands I've been force roaming my phone on Verizon.  Their 3g is solid and allows my phone to send texts.  Unfortunately, Sprint has taken a big step back in the Anaheim areas around Angel Stadium (and Disneyland).

Weird thing happened. Lost LTE at the home area (Batavia & Fletcher) but gained LTE at work (Tustin & Katella). :P

LTE speedtest at work was excellent. 20mbps down, 8mbps up. :D

Such a bummer to hear that HarryChimp71. It sounded so promising at the beginning of the season. I guess it's just a part of the growing pains, that I went through nearly a year earlier with Sprint in San Diego.

I feel like there are several reasons causing Orange County to seem delayed. Very few new sites are being LTE accepted now...

Depends on the city.  Also, i noticed with the new information being a premier sponsor gets you, there is also the abundance of wimax towers that need to be either converted or decommissioned for redundancies.

Would love to see the Wimax tower behind my office building converted to NV. Services is limited and sometimes unusable inside the building. The closest tower is a mile away.

I have two towers closest to me, both are half a block from each other and one is 3g accepted and the other looks to be redundent.  But who knows since no matter what my signal is still crap, for now.

I think sometimes extra sites look redundant but they are actually aimed in different directions. The site at the Fullerton airport and the one on gilbert and malvern show this.

Just checked and the tower at Lampson and Western is 4G accepted.  I'm picking up 4G from that tower.  There are two towers that are closer to me that are not 4G yet.  Can't wait for those two to be accepted.

Feeling pretty good & content right now. I finally get LTE at both the home and work areas and the speeds are great! 20Mbps at work and 17Mbps in the home area.

I hope Sprint keeps building its network faster and maintain it well. I was thinking about ditching Sprint at the end of my first contract with Sprint in May of '14 but I guess I won't anymore. :D

So glad I found S4Gru - not only did I learn a lot about networking but I feel more informed and less frustrated about Sprint's timeline and progress thanks to the Sponsor info. :D

You get a chance to understand how upgrades can't happen over night like the after customer.

It looks like it's not all of Southern Cali that gets screwed, but it does look like all of Orange County after all. And the SE corner of LA County. It might not all be because of the IBEZ. There may be another SMR license holder in the area too. Seems like I remember AJ mentioning this before.

In the graphic below, you can see a map of the LA Metro market. The red sites will not receive any 800 MHZ service (CDMA or LTE). There are some areas here and there that will not get 800 for other reasons. But you can see all of SE LA County doesn't receive 800. That has to be either from the IBEZ or because of possibly another license holder in Orange County.

Robert, has this map changed at all? Could you post one of the North LA market in the sponsors section possibly? I'm just curious as to why the outskirts of LA are not getting 800 Mhz and if my area will get it. The coverage is so poor in some of the red dotted areas that this is surprising to see. Specially by Gorman and the fringes of Ventura Country and LA county.

Lol... I just drive from OC to Vegas. Last year I used to be able to stream videos. Now for the entire road I never once got a speedtest over 0.02mbs. My oh my. Hopefully these are all microwave sites that can be upgraded quickly.

Are there any Aliso Viejo folks in here? I live there and the upgrades appear pretty complete around the town centers but the LTE only seems to cover like 5 percent of the area. Are there some ghost towers hiding that we don't know of? Do the hills really make the LTE signal only travel about 100 feet?

For people who have S4GRU sponsor access... I posted some graphs of the OC network vision updates over time at http://www.s4gru.com/index.php?/topic/1120-Comments-related-to-NV-Sites-Complete-&-Site-Acceptance-Update-Threads#entry218619

So what is the deal in South OC and Ladera Ranch?  Coverage seems to have gotten worse!  I cannot get LTE in any reliable capacity near my home, in the middle of Ladera Ranch, and the area is supposed to have two fully working, upgraded LTE towers right now- am I wrong, or aren't both Ladera Ranch towers now full LTE?

    • So, in summary, here are the options I tested: T-Mobile intl roaming - LTE on SoftBank, routes back to the US (~220ms to 4.2.2.4) IIJ physical SIM - LTE on NTT, local routing Airalo - LTE on SoftBank and KDDI (seems to prefer SoftBank), routed through Singapore (SingTel) Ubigi - 5G on NTT, routed through Singapore (Transatel) US Mobile East Asia roaming - 5G on SoftBank, routed through Singapore (Club SIM) Saily - 5G on NTT, routed through Hong Kong (Truphone)...seems to be poorer routing my1010 - LTE on SoftBank and KDDI (seems to prefer KDDI), routed through Taiwan (Chunghwa Telecom) I wouldn't buy up on the T-Mobile international roaming, but it's a solid fallback. If you have the US Mobile roaming eSIM that's a great option. Otherwise Ubigi, Airalo, or my1010 are all solid options, so get whatever's cheapest. I wouldn't bother trying to find a physical SIM from IIJ...the Japanese IP is nice but there's enough WiFi that you can get a Japanese IP enough for whatever you need, and eSIM flexibility is great (IIJ as eSIM but seems a bit more involved to get it to work).
    • So, the rural part of the journey still has cell service for nearly all the way, usually on B18/19/8 (depending on whether we're talking about KDDI/NTT/SoftBank). I think I saw a bit of B28 and even n28 early on in the trip, though that faded out after a bit. Once we got to where we were going though, KDDI had enough B41 to pull 150+ Mbps, while NTT and SoftBank had B1/B3 IIRC. Cell service was likewise generally fine from Kawaguchiko Station to Tokyo on the express bus to Shinjuku Station, though there were some cases where only low-band LTE was available and capacity seemed to struggle. I also figured out what I was seeing with SoftBank on 40 MHz vs. 100 MHz n77: the 40 MHz blocks are actually inside the n78 band class, but SoftBank advertises them as n77, probably to facilitate NR CA. My phone likely preferred the 40 MHz slices as they're *much* lower-frequency, ~3.4 GHz rather than ~3.9, though of course I did see the 100 MHz slice being used rather often. By contrast, when I got NR on NTT it was either n28 10x10 or, more often, 100 MHz n78. As usual, EMEA bands on my S24 don't CA, so any data speeds I saw were the result of either one LTE carrier or one LTE carrier plus one NR carrier...except for B41 LTE. KDDI seems to have more B41 bandwidth live at this point, so my1010 or Airalo works well for this, and honestly while SoftBank and NTT 5G (in descending order of availability) have 5G that's readily available it may be diminishing returns, particularly given that I still don't know how to, as someone not from Hong Kong, get an eSIM that runs on SoftBank 5G that isn't the USM "comes for free with the unlimited premium package" roaming eSIM (NTT is easy enough thanks to Ubigi). In other news, I was able to borrow someone's Rakuten eSIM and...got LTE with it. 40 Mbps down, 20 Mbps up, 40ms latency to Tokyo while in Tokyo...which isn't any worse than the Japan-based physical SIMs I had used earlier. But not getting n77 or n257 was disappointing, though I had to test the eSIM from one spot rather than bouncing around the city to find somewhere with better reception. It's currently impossible to get a SIM as a foreigner that runs on Rakuten, so that was the best I could do. Also, I know my phone doesn't have all the LTE and 5G bands needed to take full advantage of Japanese networks. My S24 is missing: B21 (1500 MHz) - NTT B11 (1500 MHz) - KDDI, SoftBank B42 (3500 MHz) - NTT, KDDI, SoftBank n79 (4900 MHz) - NTT Of the above, B42/n79 are available on the latest iPhones, though you lose n257, and I'm guessing you're not going to find B11/B21 on a phone sold outside Japan.
    • T-Mobile acquiring SoniqWave's 2.5 GHz spectrum  Another spectrum speculator down! T-Mobile is acquiring all of their BRS/EBS licenses and their leases. Details are lacking but it looks like T-Mobile might be giving them 3.45GHz in exchange in some of the markets where they're acquiring BRS/EBS to sweeten the deal and stay below the spectrum screen. Hopefully NextWave is at the negotiating table with T-Mobile so NYC can finally get access to the full BRS/EBS band as well.  — — — — — Edit: Turns out this is a spectrum swap where T-Mobile is basically giving them DoD spectrum in a bunch of markets in exchange for all of SoniqWave's BRS/EBS. SoniqWave will likely turn around and sell the DoD spectrum to AT&T whenever the FCC removes the 40MHz cap.
    • Maybe. The taller buildings on one side of the street all have Fios access and the NYCHA buildings are surrounded by Verizon macros that have mmWave. I don’t think this site will add much coverage. It’d be better off inside the complex itself.
