Atlanta, GA LTE (Live)

As of 12.01 am I have been having on and off lte signals in Conyers. I do know if it is a tower that is set to come online soon, or testing. However the results have not been good. signal loss like crazy, and speed results at my cousins where I am living till the end of the month when I could get it to lock long enough for a speed test for around 4mpb. On the way to work which is a ten min drive still in Conyers I hit a consistent 8 mpb with a peak of 27 down and 13 up,

I am pretty sure that I am not connectting to the tower that I thought I was because I am in the office and less than 1000 yards from tower. I have yet to catch a signal in ten minutes. This particullar site has been live since may. So I must have been on the cusp of a tower in monroe or loganville. Possibly. I can not access the sponsors section from work, I have screen shots but can not upload them from work. I have long and lat and ip info if that helps anyone

Yeah, the tower to your south has been live since the beginning of may so I doubt if thats the one you are connecting too since sprint seems to be blocking them once they go live. There is another tower less than a mile or so to your north west off of ellington dr and north main (AT54XC115) that is schedule to go live on 6/22 so it may very well be that one.

Hey all,

I'm pretty much a network newbie but noticed that my HTC EVO LTE shows the local towers' network type recently (last couple of days, I think) changed from EVDO to eHRPD. Does that possibly indicate that the LTE hardware is up and converting the data to CDMA 'til they flip the switch??? Or is it perhaps meaningless? ;)

I'm located in Roswell off Alpharetta Hwy (near Hembree Road).

This site currently does not allow uploading of photos directly to the site. The best way is to upload the screenshot to an online host of some sort. I use imgur.com but others here use photobucket or flickr, etc. Once uploaded then copy the "direct link" URL and paste that link into the box that pops up when you click this button --->8qmQB.png in the posting window

If you already know this procedure and you were having a different issue with screenshots, my apologies. I'm not trying to insult your intelligence or your knowledge.

Based on where you are, the closest tower to you isn't scheduled to get lte until september but there are several sites in your general area already live or about to come live very shortly. Once a site goes live sprint then turns around and makes it undiscoverable while they work the kinks out. Anyway, once sprint flips the switch you should be good to go in my opinion.

I find myself a little bit confused... I'm in central Georgia, and I realize that rural areas will be far down the list for LTE (except north Georgia, as part of the Atlanta market).

I'm ok with waiting for LTE here, I upgraded to the LG Viper last month 'cause I needed to use my Premier upgrade this year, and I decided not to wait to see what comes out later in the year (plus, Best Buy had the Viper on sale for $20, and I had more than $20 in Reward Zone certificates - I got the Viper for no cash - and $25 Google Wallet credit to boot. Hard to beat that).

Several Sprint sites in the area have had work done, according to network.sprint.com, and more are on tap to have work done "in the next 6 months."

I've been poking around this site a bit, and I see several mentions that eHRPD is only showing on sites that have had NV upgrades complete.

Here's my confusion - my phone reports eHRPD connectivity. Everywhere I go in Sprint coverage here in middle Georgia.

But NV isn't scheduled here... we're not part of the Atlanta market (this is a former affiliate area), I don't believe.

Un-confuse me?

eHRPD is 3G EVDO that is capable of handing off to LTE seamlessly (because it uses the same 4G core and all IP architecture like LTE). It was originally believed that eHRPD was being deployed only in markets where LTE deployment is active. However, this has been proven not true.

eHRPD is installed by software upgrade and does not require technicians to be at the site. eHRPD is confirmed as occurring in markets far in advance of LTE deployment in many instances. The Georgia market will not start NV/LTE deployment until next year. However, the 4G Core that eHRPD runs on for the Georgia market is live now (because it's the same as Atlanta), so they went ahead and started upgrading your market to eHRPD in advance.

Hope that makes sense to you. It's kind of convoluted.

Perfect sense, and I appreciate the clarification.

They'll have a heck of a time getting backhaul to most of their sites here - very little fiber (read: none passing most sites), and not a whole lot of copper available. I won't hold my breath on LTE, even if scheduled, until at least late 2013 (if then) unless I start seeing some fiber and/or copper going in toward some sites. One of the ILECs isn't real good about it (took over 6 months to get fiber into my data center).

But if I need a taste, I can ride up north of Macon a ways :)

Are there any cable providers in the area that have their own backbone (not just using the telephone company's)? They could definitely be used as AAVs for backhaul in NV. If they'll only deploy to cities, there's always the ability to serve other sites via microwave, though hopefully Ericsson uses gigabit symmetric radios (they do exist) rather than the ones (that do half that) from AlcaLu.

Cox does have their own fiber, and backbone to the ATL, but the same problem... fiber passing the sites.

Likely most sites have T1 via copper now... Microwave's been removed over the years from all the sites (all carriers) that I've seen in these parts.

AT&T is one ILEC in the area, and they've also got fiber passing sites (sharing many of the sites with Sprint, Verizon, TMobile). Verizon LTE recently lit up around here, but the western part of the area's not served by AT&T, nor by Cox in the southern part. There, we have Windstream (formerly ALLTEL).

I'll have to check with some folks and see if I can find out if they're building fiber or additional copper into sites, especially along I-75. In order to make a 2013 roll-out of LTE here, the ILECs need to at least be in engineering NOW.

Cox has talked before about how awesome cellular backhaul is for them revenue-wise. Just think...15x their average revenue per user for just one site, and they can sell that connection to two or three other carriers while they're at it.

MW might come back. New equipment has a lot more capacity than the old stuff, to the point that, if fiber can't be gotten at a reasonable pace/price, microwave can be implemented and no one will ever know the difference from a subscriber standpoint.

VZ LTE going live is a good sign. From what I understand, they want fiber to each site more badly than Sprint does, so if Verizon has LTE deployed to a cell site that Sprint also uses (I know that VZ owns its own towers in some places) Sprint could just use the same backhaul vendor and get a quick turn-up time, absent any shenanigans from Verizon (I've seen an AT&T backhaul RFQ that stated that, if a fiber buildout was done to a cell site in order to provide them backhaul, they were to be the only customer for that site!).

As for Windstream, they love cellular backhaul, for the same reasons that Cox does. As an added benefit, they probably have fiber to a number of towers already, since beyond 15 or so T1s the maintenance/crosstalk/etc. means it makes more sense to run everything over fiber on the long haul, then demux to copper or whatever at the site.

We'll have to see where they build/have built.

I know I certainly don't care what the transport is.

In a past life, I had DS3 on copper into a data center, and that's 30 T1s. Only 45 mb/s, but multiple DS3 via copper is certainly doable. Windstream did some maintenance last night, moving T1s around (I have a couple for backup) to different DS3 muxes in the local office, so they may be making room for additional capacity, either for more VZ sites or Sprint sites, or both.

Sprint themselves takes 120 days to even do a T1 move (min 90, they prefer to give FOC 180 days out).

Windstream certainly has capacity - I have 50 mb/s on fiber now, so here's hoping they have or will pull fiber out to the sites over the next 6-9 months.

I'll be happy just to see better 3G speeds... heading into a weekend where I'll be using my Sprint 3G/WiMax air card pretty extensively, and it'll be painful, I know. In fact, after this weekend, I'm dropping the air card from my account, since I so rarely use it, and I would actually save $10/month by adding hotspot to my phone to use when I need it (relatively rare).

1st time poster..

Hey all, dumb question and sorry if its been answered before. I've searched but can find a definite answer. I think I saw once where someone stated "When LTE is up and running, if you currently receive a 3G signal in an area, you will receive LTE signal as well". ???

I live in Doraville and work in Sandy Springs btw.

Thanks

Yes, this is true. But let me clarify. When LTE deployment is complete, there will be LTE coverage over the entire Sprint 3G footprint. However, not at market launch.

At market will launch with LTE when they have approximately 40% - 50% of sites complete in that market. Then after launch they continue finishing up the remaining sites in the market.

How do you verify eHRPD connectivity? I'm curious what shows in my local market.

I just run a speed test and then view the results in the results tab and it will show what network you are connected to. See under "Location"

You can go to Settings and look under about device in most Android devices, it will display network connection type. Also, you can use apps like NetMonitor and CDMA Field Test. Speedtest app also shows the network type in the details of specific speed test results under the Results tab.

    • In the conference call they had two question on additional spectrum. One was the 800 spectrum. They are not certain what will happen, thus have not really put it into their plans either way (sale or no sale). They do have a reserve level. Nationwide 800Mhz is seen as great for new technologies which I presume is IOT or 5g slices.  T-Mobile did not bite on use of their c-band or DOD.  mmWave rapidly approaching deadlines not mentioned at all. FWA brushes on this as it deals with underutilized spectrum on a sector by sector basis.  They are willing to take more money to allow FWA to be mobile (think RV or camping). Unsure if this represents a higher priority, for example, FWA Mobile in RVs in Walmart parking lots working where mobile phones need all the capacity. In terms of FWA capacity, their offload strategy is fiber through joint ventures where T-Mobile does the marketing, sales, and customer support while the fiber company does the network planning and installation.  50%-50% financial split not being consolidated into their books. I think discussion of other spectrum would have diluted the fiber joint venture discussion. They do have a fund which one use is to purchase new spectrum. Sale of the 800Mhz would go into this. It should be noted that they continue to buy 2.5Ghz spectrum from schools etc to replace leases. They will have a conference this fall  to update their overall strategies. Other notes from the call are 75% of the phones on the network are 5g. About 85% of their sites have n41, n25, and n71, 90% 5g.  93% of traffic is on midband.  SA is also adding to their performance advantage, which they figure is still ahead of other carriers by two years. It took two weeks to put the auction 108 spectrum to use at their existing sites. Mention was also made that their site spacing was designed for midrange thus no gaps in n41 coverage, while competitors was designed for lowband thus toggles back and forth for n77 also with its shorter range.
    • The manual network selection sounds like it isn't always scanning NR, hence Dish not showing up. Your easiest way to force Dish is going to be forcing the phone into NR-only mode (*#*#4636#*#* menu?), since rainbow sims don't support SA on T-Mobile.
    • "The company’s unique multi-layer approach to 5G, with dedicated standalone 5G deployed nationwide across 600MHz, 1.9GHz, and 2.5GHz delivers customers a consistently strong experience, with 85% of 5G traffic on sites with all three spectrum bands deployed." Meanwhile they are very close to a construction deadline June 1 for 850Mhz of mmWave in most of Ohio covering 27500-28350Mhz expiring 6/8/2028. No reported sightings.  Buildout notice issue sent by FCC in March 5, 2024 https://wireless2.fcc.gov/UlsApp/letterPdf/LetterPdfController?licId=4019733&letterVersionId=178&autoLetterId=13060705&letterCode=CR&radioServiceCode=UU&op=LetterPdf&licSide=Y&archive=null&letterTo=L  No soecific permits seen in a quick check of Columbus. They also have an additional 200Mhz covering at 24350-25450 Mhz and 24950-25050Mhz with no buildout date expiring 12/11/2029.
    • T-Mobile Delivers Industry-Leading Customer, Service Revenue and Profitability Growth in Q1 2024, and Raises 2024 Guidance https://www.t-mobile.com/news/business/t-mobile-q1-2024-earnings — — — — — I find it funny that when they talk about their spectrum layers they're saying n71, n25, and n41. They're completely avoiding talking about mmWave.
    • Was true in my market. Likely means a higher percentage of 5g phones in your market.
