Powerline Networking (question on it's use)
Bob Newhart replied to jonathanm1978's topic in General Topics
Even when I put the power line adapters on the same dual socket, the max speed the software application told me was around 200 Mbps. On the same circuit in the same room about 12 ft apart, it dropped to just over 100 Mbps. 600Mbps or 500Mbps just isn't going to happen, ever. 50 Mbps is enough to stream anything in the house. I'm the only house on the transformer in my yard. I found going to a good wireless network is a little more reliable, I use Ubiquiti Unfi in my house for most connections. Only use powerline when I have to. -
Reality Check: Can Sprint restore its luster?
Bob Newhart replied to mhammett's topic in General Topics
Well Sprint is slowly reducing coverage and increasing fees. Why I get per line surcharges (Sprint fees) on the Airave is beyond me. Sprint should be more honest, advertise a real plan cost + taxes. People won't have a problem with costs and taxes if they were just honest. From this month's bill. Administrative Charge Increase Effective 9/1/13, the Administrative Charge will increase to $1.99 per line per month for customers subject to the charge. For details on surcharges, visit sprint.com/taxesandfees and review your wireless service agreement. Then Alaska coverage reduced. Important Network Coverage Change Effective 10/1/13, on-network coverage in Alaska will change to roaming (off-network) coverage. For details and roaming restrictions, see sprint.com/termsandconditions and for coverage details, see sprint.com/coveragechange -
Powerline Networking (question on it's use)
Bob Newhart replied to jonathanm1978's topic in General Topics
I use Zyxel powerline networking, works quite well most of the time. Their 500 Mbps product, gives me about 40 Mbps to a separate building. What is the question? If you have a question about your network setup, draw a diagram to help us understand. -
Sprint LTE Coverage Maps via Sensorly

Please make an option to view the non-roaming and roaming maps separately. This makes them useful for non-LTE maps. -

I see a lot of white/in-progress sites on the map. http://s4gru.com/index.php?/topic/517-nv-sites-complete/ They have been popping up around Auburn and Renton, very populated areas.- 1,717 replies

Boosting LTE over 1900
Bob Newhart replied to miguell2's topic in Network, Network Vision/LTE Deployment
You don't know how lucky you are to have that good of a connection. You can control internet traffic per device on your router if you want to, if you have the correct router. -
AT&T band 5 LTE 850 makes its first appearance
Bob Newhart replied to vryan44's topic in General Topics
How is T-Mobile using just 1700 Mhz for LTE, for both upload and download? Unless this table listing 1700 Mhz also assumes the paired 2100 Mhz band? thanks -

Bob Newhart replied to vryan44's topic in General Topics
T-Mobile uses their 1700/2100 Mhz for upload/download combination. Do they do that because they are required to, or because they want to? Maybe a 700/850Mhz combination would be better paired? -

Are cell companies allowed to upload/download on different frequencies such as upload on 1900 Mhz and download on 700 Mhz at the same time? -
At my company we could choose between Sprint/Verizon/AT&T. I chose AT&T so I could use a Nexus or Google Play phone, my personal is of course Sprint for now. But because Sprint integrates really well with Google Voice, I don't carry my Sprint phone much these days Our company has about 5000 lines mostly on AT&T and Verizon, mostly iPhones. Most of our locations are in rural areas with zero Sprint coverage and sometimes no cell coverage at all. The work AT&T line costs the company $45 for 500 mins, unlimited night and weekends, unlimited SMS text, unlimited data. There is an extra minute pool that is available for when you go over, not sure how that works. MMS are charged per message. I got an automated text message this week telling me I went over 5GB and my speeds might be reduced, they weren't. They also the same plan that includes Canada for $65. It is a good plan.

We think not. You can thank the rest of for any cell/landline coverage, as Hawaii takes in a lot of money from the USF. I know Sprint gets quite a bit of money from the USF to provide cell coverage. I thought that was interesting. In my area in the cities, T-Mobile has had HSPA+ for quite a while, but max speed tops out at 1 Mbps. So they don't have to have fibre or any fast data connections to offer HSPA+, they could even offer LTE if they wanted, and keep their T1s.

New Samsung chip can manage up to 384GB of Phone Storage
Bob Newhart replied to Rukin1's topic in Samsung
With the 4.3 Android update for the Samsung s4 GPe, it almost impossible to access the uSD card as it is. A butchered/buggy OS saw to that. 16GB on a phone is certainly not enough when Phone manufacturers and cell providers dump all their bloatwear on there. Just because we want more than 16GB of storage it doesn't mean we want to store illegal downloads on there. I prefer good quality rips of my CDs plus offline map data, photo and videos from the camera, all legal. Besides, I'd guess that 50% of the stuff on youtube infringes on copyrights, including the many joke video links from this site. So people using Youtube, just because it is streamed from a site and not downloaded as a single file, it doesn't mean that you're not committing an illegal activity. -
It is nice seeing the blue signal bars which indicate a good data connection to the google servers. This is something I shall look into thanks.

Yes, when ran on a Sprint phone, the bar at the top displays two icons, one for 1xRTT and one for LTE/EVDO/1xRTT. The 1xRTT icons can be turned on and off, in the preferences. I really like this setup because as you know, the phone connects to two different sources. In this image, the signal bars for the SignalCheckPro show different levels that the LTE signal bars by quite a bit. I'm not sure which signal bar is using what for the data source, either the GSM or LTE signal. I think by looking at the numbers that your app is displaying the GSM/EDGE/HSPA signal level and labelling it as 4G. When LTE is not available, it uses the same GSM/EDGE/HSPA signal and labels it as G/E/H/H+. I'm just guessing here. You are correct, that the pull down when used on a GSM/LTE phone, it does display what you said, the two numbers next to each other. Please don't change things just on my account, I feel that expanding the GSM portion of this app, your market audience would grow, if you want it to. Its the best app out there for what it does. I'm just happy that it even runs on the GSM phone I use for work. The three screen captures are from an s4 GPe on AT&T. I can beta test again for you anytime. Thanks!

Yep, we swapped the Gnex phones for S3 phones, much much better in just about every way. The phone works in so many more places. Only thing I miss is the Nexus OS.
-
When using the app on my Sprint s3, it lists two signal levels in the notification bar, one for LTE/EVDO and one for 1xRTT. Unless a recent change removed the two different numbers. When using the app on an s4 GPe (Unlocked GSM/LTE version), it only lists a single signal level in the notification bar. I would think that it would list both the GSM and the LTE levels, as they are two separate signals. Just curious, great app.

Sprint LTE Coverage Maps via Sensorly

Yep, crazy design. -
I like their writing style.

Only a 1GB on data combined? I think 500 MB of mine per month is just app updates alone.
-
I chalk it up to comparing it with when the EVDO/RTT data hardly works and just turns your phone into a pocket warmer. If we had working 3G, we'd go through data too of course, so its really comparing a working tower vs a non-working.

Broadband options for Rural areas that aren't really rural??
Bob Newhart replied to vandi's topic in General Topics
I also hope the whole plan in PA is successful. I would think that the phone companies would do the minimum required by law if they will lose money. This other wireless ISP plan that MobileSolutions is talking about would be great too. But rural wireless solutions in the heavily forested areas mixed in the hills, means wireless services are none existent. -
Broadband options for Rural areas that aren't really rural??
Bob Newhart replied to vandi's topic in General Topics
Dedicated to your house only. Our town is fed by 8 T1 lines, None bonded. 1.544 Mbps each line speed. Some are used for voice, some for DSL data. The thing is, the DSLAM in town feeds several hundred houses, if 7 of the T1s are used for data, that gives 10 Mbps for hundreds of houses. 3am gives full speed of 1.25 Mbps (They are allowed to advertise a fake speed of 1.5 Mbps) 7pm gives a speed of 0.2 to 0.4 Mbps, if we're lucky. So by that PA law, they can connect the DSLAM in your town to a single 1.544 Mbps T1 line, feed many houses. All while having your DSL modem sync at the 1.5 Mbps rate, just like mine does. Without any competition, there is no reason for the phone company to provide a quality service. When ours was Qwest, they had a lower limit for how many DSL lines they will hook per T1 line, when CenturyLink bought them, that limit went bye bye. The quality went doooowwn hill quick.
