Well I haven't seen any Sprint small cells in New York City light poles,but I have seen plenty of Verizon ones. In fact big evil red alone with crown Castle are installing small cells in my neighborhood (Morningside Heights, Columbia University campus)

 

 

I feel like per his description, you wouldn't see them.

Because they're mandated by the NYC to be stealth setups. You will not see them unless you specifically know their locations or track them down somehow (pretty hard in the super urban zones like NYC). Most you'll see is a can antenna.

Then you know what sprints small cells look like. There will be slight differences like the size and shape of the box half way up the pole.

 

The quick way to find out where is start a NYC spreadsheet/Map. Then look for GCIs that are very high in the B25/B26 range that don't fit the nearby sites.

How about the GCI's are they unique to the small cells or are they just acting as repeaters from a host macro site?

In markets that track GCI the small cells can be unique. Every site is different but what has been found some GCIs are different.

 

The city can tell the DAS companies what they want them to look like. If I were you I would have logging on in SCP and look for GCI above 800 for B25( so 012800xx plus). For those of you in Ericsson markets those higher GCI's can be B26 but in ALU the GCI should be different and be higher out of ALU's pattern whatever that pattern looks like.

Took a nice drive from South Amboy NJ to Yonkers NYC (about 50 miles) and only dropped band 41 about 4 or 5 times for short periods. 

 

That same drive just a lil over a year ago would have me drop to 3G a couple times let alone keep B41 for that long. 

 

Speeds almost never dropped below 35mbs. (averaging between 50-60mbs)

 

As a note, only dropped to 3G once going through the Lincoln Tunnel, everywhere else 100% LTE.

 

Pretty damn great if you ask me.

I find that once you leave NYC and enter Westchester, things get really spotty. I stay on LTE but it's obvious that more work needs to be done there.

Last time I was in Cross County mall only B25/26 super congested, needs more density.

Not for NYC. There will be no exterior visible equipment for mobilitie deployments.

 

As I previously mentioned, it's one of the conditions NYC placed on sprints deployments.

So in these can antennas, are the RRUs, microwave backhaul, etc all inside the can antennas.  Where are the guts of a small cell setup like they are doing with Mobilite in LA Metro?

A canister antenna in a cylindrical covering with radio equipment placed in an underground fault or at an enclosed box at the base.

These are what I assume are Verizon small cell's around my area. They have them all over the place at this point, ranging from retail areas like this to residential neighborhoods. I don't have a way to confirm they are Verizon, but they sure don't seem to be Sprint or AT&T and I don't think there's anyway they are T-Mobile. Anyway, they did a great job installing all of them. I bet most people don't even notice they are there.

 

If you turn yourself all the way around in that link, you can see a Sprint macro in the background that towers over the Sprint HQ.

Those are Verizon Wireless small cells. Crown Castle has been installing those around my neighborhood for the last 30 days.

How is it Verizon seems to be flying in small cells and sprint not so much? I know it's hard to say? Didn't sprint announce their plan first?

Vzw will announce their completion first and take the wind from sprints sails because sprint will be catching up again.... Smh it's the never ending battle

Verizon never announced a plan. They've been doing small cells for way longer than Sprint at this point so their efforts are much more noticeable than Sprint's and they're obviously going to finish first. The fact that they've been at this way longer combined with their deep pockets means they'll definitely finish first.

    • Your referring to the $25.00 a month Infinite Unlimited plan?  I don't see any other plans on there even cheaper than that on their website.  I was looking at the Motorola 2023 Edge fwiw as well for $10.00 a month. 
    • A heavy n41 overlay as an acquisition condition would be a win for customers, and eventually a win for T-Mobile as that might be enough to preclude VZW/AT&T adding C-Band for FWA due to spreading the market too thinly (which means T-Mobile would just have local WISPs/wireline ISPs as competition). USCC spacing (which is likely for contiguous 700 MHz LTE coverage in rural areas) isn't going to be enough for contiguous n41 anyway, and I doubt they'll densify enough to get there.
    • Boost Infinite with a rainbow SIM (you can get it SIM-only) is the cheapest way, at $25/mo, to my knowledge; the cheaper Boost Mobile plans don't run on Dish native. Check Phonescoop for n70 support on a given phone; the Moto G 5G from last year may be the cheapest unlocked phone with n70 though data speeds aren't as good as something with an X70 or better modem.
    • Continuing the USCC discussion, if T-Mobile does a full equipment swap at all of USCC's sites, which they probably will for vendor consistency, and if they include 2.5 on all of those sites, which they probably will as they definitely have economies of scale on the base stations, that'll represent a massive capacity increase in those areas over what USCC had, and maybe a coverage increase since n71 will get deployed everywhere and B71 will get deployed any time T-Mobile has at least 25x25, and maybe where they have 20x20. Assuming this deal goes through (I'm betting it does), I figure I'll see contiguous coverage in the area of southern IL where I was attempting to roam on USCC the last time I was there, though it might be late next year before that switchover happens.
    • Forgot to post this, but a few weeks ago I got to visit these small cells myself! They're spread around Grant park and the surrounding areas, but unfortunately none of the mmwave cells made it outside of the parks along the lake into the rest of downtown. I did spot some n41 small cells around downtown, but they seemed to be older deployments limited to 100mhz and performed poorly.
