Sprint Stock Good Idea?

I turn 18 in two days so I'll finally be able to purchase some sprint stock!

Happy early Birthday.

Too bad the market went down today. I was 4 cents from breaking even on my investment at close of trading on Friday. Now I'm 29 cents away again. :(

Just an update to Sprint's continued stock market climb, the stock price is up to $3.38 as of 10:56am EDT. And a factoid that has very little relevance, their market cap is now over $10 billion. It'll be interesting to see where the stock finishes this week. The 2nd quarter closed on Saturday and their earnings announcement is 3 weeks away.

Well, Sprint's stock closed at $3.41/share. That's up 4.6% for the day and 46% YTD. Not a bad way to open the 3rd quarter. I wonder if people are expecting Sprint to post a good news quarter?

The hot streak continues today. Up $0.09/share to $3.49 as of 1:08 pm EDT.

edit: And we finished out the day at $3.47 per share. And that's where we'll stay until the market opens up again on Thursday.

Well since the market reopens on Thursday, let me ask the following and hopefully not throw this off too off topic in the process.

So how does one get into buying Sprint stock? Does one go to a broker, or use an online outfit? Mind you this is coming from a complete (stock) virgin newbie.

Lots of different ways. You can open an individual account at places like etrade, td ameritrade, t rowe price, fidelity and numerous others. Some have minimums some don't. Some have higher minimums than others. Places like etrade are mostly online, self-service type brokers. Although for a fee you can pick up the phone and talk to a broker. Places like fidelity give you the choice of either a real broker or do it yourself. and of course each brokerage will charge different commissions. The do it yourself ones like etrade will charge less than full service ones.

Any stock buying it do, and it isn't much, is in an etrade account. It's been a while, but I think etrade charges 9.99 per trade for up to 1,000 shares.

Well, looks like the hot streak is over. Sprint's stock is down $0.09 at 9:40 am EDT. If it finishes in the red today that'll be two down days in a row.

Are you sure you have the patience for the stock market? A slot machine might move at the pace for you.

I'm assuming this is better for you than the casino? ;)

If the consensus is better to go to a casino, then I better not get into stocks, since I always lose my money at casinos.

I am up like $75 on Vegas, I better not gamble again. I will probably even it out next time.

I believe the consensus is that trading stocks is not for the feint of heart or those looking for a quick gain and exit. (i.e. casino)

Yes, it's better to invest in stocks than to lose money in the slot machines, even with the market as volatile as it is.

I find it best to invest and ignore. The more you check your stocks, the crazier you get. I occasionally check to make sure that the companies haven't gone under, but I find it more therapeutic to set and forget.

I understand that. I just check the price and move on because lately I have been too busy to sit around watching the market. I just hope last quarter was better for Sprint and they post some better numbers to drive the price up.

Since you are on the market page, can you check something for me? How's my Enron stock doing? Could you check my Kodak, Circuit City, Blockbuster and Hostess stocks while you're at it?

Not funny. My stepdad bought into Enron after they filed for bankruptcy. I could have hit him in the head with a 2x4 for that crap. And Circuit City was snuffed out by Best Buy, who is now starting to suffer as well for their gouging prices.

day trading fever certainly can get the heart racing. I had minor holdings in worldcom and united airlines awhile back which turned south with a quickness. at least the loss was absorbed by my many other gains in the biotech sector.

    • Since this is kind of the general chat thread, I have to share this humorous story (at least it is to me): Since around February/March of this year, my S22U has been an absolute pain to charge. USB-C cables would immediately fall out and it progressively got worse and worse until it often took me a number of minutes to get the angle of the cable juuuussst right to get charging to occur at all (not exaggerating). The connection was so weak that even walking heavily could cause the cable to disconnect. I tried cleaning out the port with a stable, a paperclip, etc. Some dust/lint/dirt came out but the connection didn't improve one bit. Needless to say, this was a MONSTER headache and had me hating this phone. I just didn't have the finances right now for a replacement.  Which brings us to the night before last. I am angry as hell because I had spent five minutes trying to get this phone to charge and failed. I am looking in the port and I notice it doesn't look right. The walls look rough and, using a staple, the back and walls feel REALLY rough and very hard. I get some lint/dust out with the staple and it improves charging in the sense I can get it to charge but it doesn't remove any of the hard stuff. It's late and it's charging, so that's enough for now. I decide it's time to see if that hard stuff is part of the connector or not. More aggressive methods are needed! I work in a biochem lab and we have a lot of different sizes of disposable needles available. So, yesterday morning, while in the lab I grab a few different sizes of needles between 26AWG and 31 AWG. When I got home, I got to work and start probing the connector with the 26 AWG and 31 AWG needle. The stuff feels extremely hard, almost like it was part of the connector, but a bit does break off. Under examination of the bit, it's almost sandy with dust/lint embedded in it. It's not part of the connector but instead some sort of rock-hard crap! That's when I remember that I had done some rock hounding at the end of last year and in January. This involved lots of digging in very sandy/dusty soils; soils which bare more than a passing resemblance to the crap in the connector. We have our answer, this debris is basically compacted/cemented rock dust. Over time, moisture in the area combined with the compression from inserting the USB-C connector had turned it into cement. I start going nuts chiseling away at it with the 26 AWG needle. After about 5-10 minutes of constant chiseling and scraping with the 26AWG and 31AWG needles, I see the first signs of metal at the back of the connector. So it is metal around the outsides! Another 5 minutes of work and I have scraped away pretty much all of the crap in the connector. A few finishing passes with the 31AWG needle, a blast of compressed air, and it is time to see if this helped any. I plug my regular USB-C cable and holy crap it clicks into place; it hasn't done that since February! I pick up the phone and the cable has actually latched! The connector works pretty much like it did over a year ago, it's almost like having a brand new phone!
    • That's odd, they are usually almost lock step with TMO. I forgot to mention this also includes the September Security Update.
    • 417.55 MB September security update just downloaded here for S24+ unlocked   Edit:  after Sept security update install, checked and found a 13MB GP System update as well.  Still showing August 1st there however.
    • T-Mobile is selling the rest of the 3.45GHz spectrum to Columbia Capital.
    • Still nothing for my AT&T and Visible phones.
