What if the permit website is not being actively updated, being hawaii and all lol

Oddly I have not found this to be the case. Dates for resubmits and decisions on them churn regularly, for the very few permits the contractor is actively working on.

Another thought that comes to mind is if the permit problem is so bad and no end in sight, they may choose to do all their sites as GMO's temporarily. In most jurisdictions, a GMO conversion does not require permits.

This I'd consider a partially real possibility. I only have permits for roughly half the work on Kauai, and the rest seems to be in less populated areas. It wouldn't surprise me at all if those sites I didn't catch permits for are all non-permit GMOs. Similarly, I haven't seen a permit application roll in Honolulu in a very very long time. Perhaps they've applied for everything they plan on full-building in round 1, and the rest are slated for GMO.

If they finish the GMOs they've planned, have the hardware laying around for many more sites, and have idle contractors, they could start rolling all the final equipment minus antennas out to the sites, GMO them, spool up the excess hybriflex so it's ready to go up the tower as soon as they have permits, and move on to the next.

But then, this would be *additional* effort. And it's Hawaii. So probably not.

Looks like the Honolulu permits are finally starting to roll. Details in the sponsor permit thread. Viva Network Vision!

(This does not mean LTE is coming, but does mean improved 3G is coming and the equipment for LTE will be on the towers waiting for fiber hookup.)

Still no Action that I have seen. Sensorly has NOTHING on the their Maps.

Tmobile ETF buyout looking better and better. Might wait for the nexus 6 then jump ship.

Probably won't see any LTE action from Sprint for a few more months. And it will take a long time for complete coverage. If you can't wait, then you probably should go.

I think the kick in the nuts is - when I traded in my 3d (with wimax) the manager said should be nearing Complete coverage by the end of the year.    So I went a head and got the htc one....which is nice....

Not so funny - When the Sirens go off - You head up the mountain. Pretty damn scary actually.

Just live up the hill to begin with :)

It's pretty crazy watching a tidal surge fill and drain a bay entirely, we have been lucky in recent years that we have only had the surges and not waves! I wouldn't worry too much, just make sure you have water & food (plus some way to heat it if required) and you are fine as long as you get high enough. The scary thing is people panicking. I rode past Safeway once after the sirens had gone off and it looked like the Helmand province.

Thats like my worst fear. Wave coming and can run fast enough .

You shouldn't ever find yourself in that situation, not in Hawai'i unless you are extremely unlucky or it is your own fault. I'm not sure how familiar you are with Tsunamis, and I understand peoples natural fear (they deserve respect but not fear) especially given the Indonesian Tsunami, but it's something that happens pretty much yearly here. A tsunami is a series of waves or tidal surges caused by an underwater landslide (or half a volcanic island falling into the ocean, if this happens give up, half a continent would drown) which is caused by an earthquake. It takes a decent sized quake to even begin to trigger a tsunami, usually we don't start to worry until its above 7.3, then we only really worry about the 8+ ones. We do get local quakes in Hawai'i, quite frequently, but they are usually pretty small. This means any tsunami is very likely to be generated a serious distance away. A tsunami travels at about 550mph IIRC, about the speed of a 747. The most common places to trigger them for us is Japan and South America. This means we get about 8-11 hours notice. There are some quakes from the South Pacific and even Alaska but these are much rarer and still give us lots of notice.

What happens is theres a big quake and NOAA starts to monitor, they check for tsunamis directly around the quake area and they check for movement in ocean bouys. If they see a risk they start to warn people. As I mentioned, I've never known us to have less than 6 hours notice. Plenty of time to ensure everyone is safe. I made sure our home was above the somewhat arbitrary line of safety. We have a kit for post tsunami just like many folks do for other disasters. Should it look like its a bigger wave I know a dirt track we can drive up to get higher. I totally understand why it frightens people and I'm not saying you shouldn't treat it with respect, but getting afraid normally generates more trouble and you honestly shouldn't ever find yourself running from a wave, you'd of had to ignore hours of sirens, warnings, police helicopters chasing you and god knows what else. There's always some muppet who goes out to try and surf it but they get dealt with. One of the safest places to be is actually out on the ocean, the wave is pretty small until it hits shallow water so its nothing if you are out at sea, all the skippers try and get their boats out if they have time.

If you plan on visiting and it worries you, get yourself in a hotel with at least 8 floors, should there be a tsunami you will find yourself being escorted to a higher floor if the hotel is in a coastal location, you should be perfectly safe from anything other than an end of days type wave which is one of those once in a billion years type event.

Same as sharks, we have plenty of them, I don't sweat my kids being in the ocean, they know where to go and where not to go and we don't go out after a storm, in overcast conditions or if the water is murky, you ensure you aren't the farthest one out and you don't make yourself look like a turtle by hanging your arms and legs off the side of a surf board. Every single shark attack here in recent years has had most or all of these factors. If the surf is good and the locals aren't out, theres a reason :)

Good news is that on that island most of the towers if not all have been 3G accepted. The next step would for the fiber for 4G. The amount of time that it can take varies. It can take anywhere from days, weeks, or even months.

Lately progress has picked up in the Hawaii Market.

If you want exact information there are maps that pin point the location of each 3G accepted tower and other valuable information become a sponsor on this site :)

It will come.  Look at Phoenix, AZ as an example.  Their NV started way behind San Diego.  They have already caught up with San Diego.  Heck our NV started late 2012, its not even finish yet.

At the very least, many sites has started and 3G part completed.  Now wait until fiber is in and LTE will start flying.

So Starting this weekend - and continuing today.

I have had some serious erosion in service.

HOPEFULLY this is a sign that they are working on towers?

Anyone else experience this?

Aloha!

From what I remember before? Yes the service

Seems to take a hit then all of a sudden service

Became better than it was from before.

I'm not sure if it was Time Warner. or Sprint contractors but there was trucks in Liliha (kunawai st) with fiber optic cables huge rolls I might add that they were unloading.

Is there. Sprint towers near Kunawai St?

    • Since this is kind of the general chat thread, I have to share this humorous story (at least it is to me): Since around February/March of this year, my S22U has been an absolute pain to charge. USB-C cables would immediately fall out and it progressively got worse and worse until it often took me a number of minutes to get the angle of the cable juuuussst right to get charging to occur at all (not exaggerating). The connection was so weak that even walking heavily could cause the cable to disconnect. I tried cleaning out the port with a stable, a paperclip, etc. Some dust/lint/dirt came out but the connection didn't improve one bit. Needless to say, this was a MONSTER headache and had me hating this phone. I just didn't have the finances right now for a replacement.  Which brings us to the night before last. I am angry as hell because I had spent five minutes trying to get this phone to charge and failed. I am looking in the port and I notice it doesn't look right. The walls look rough and, using a staple, the back and walls feel REALLY rough and very hard. I get some lint/dust out with the staple and it improves charging in the sense I can get it to charge but it doesn't remove any of the hard stuff. It's late and it's charging, so that's enough for now. I decide it's time to see if that hard stuff is part of the connector or not. More aggressive methods are needed! I work in a biochem lab and we have a lot of different sizes of disposable needles available. So, yesterday morning, while in the lab I grab a few different sizes of needles between 26AWG and 31 AWG. When I got home, I got to work and start probing the connector with the 26 AWG and 31 AWG needle. The stuff feels extremely hard, almost like it was part of the connector, but a bit does break off. Under examination of the bit, it's almost sandy with dust/lint embedded in it. It's not part of the connector but instead some sort of rock-hard crap! That's when I remember that I had done some rock hounding at the end of last year and in January. This involved lots of digging in very sandy/dusty soils; soils which bare more than a passing resemblance to the crap in the connector. We have our answer, this debris is basically compacted/cemented rock dust. Over time, moisture in the area combined with the compression from inserting the USB-C connector had turned it into cement. I start going nuts chiseling away at it with the 26 AWG needle. After about 5-10 minutes of constant chiseling and scraping with the 26AWG and 31AWG needles, I see the first signs of metal at the back of the connector. So it is metal around the outsides! Another 5 minutes of work and I have scraped away pretty much all of the crap in the connector. A few finishing passes with the 31AWG needle, a blast of compressed air, and it is time to see if this helped any. I plug my regular USB-C cable and holy crap it clicks into place; it hasn't done that since February! I pick up the phone and the cable has actually latched! The connector works pretty much like it did over a year ago, it's almost like having a brand new phone!
    • That's odd, they are usually almost lock step with TMO. I forgot to mention this also includes the September Security Update.
    • 417.55 MB September security update just downloaded here for S24+ unlocked   Edit:  after Sept security update install, checked and found a 13MB GP System update as well.  Still showing August 1st there however.
    • T-Mobile is selling the rest of the 3.45GHz spectrum to Columbia Capital.
    • Still nothing for my AT&T and Visible phones.
