Report Shentel LTE Sightings Here

Recommended Posts

We have a core member from Waynesboro who spends a lot of time in Hagerstown. He has reported 30Mbps+ speeds in areas with strong signals. If you never get speeds above 8Mbps anywhere around H-town regardless of signal strength, then you may have a problem with your device.

Yeah, I was thinking RSSI numbers...

If you want answers on why the speeds are slow off that tower, you'll need to call shentel or sprint for troubleshooting.

LMFAO!! I bet they will willingly share tech. info with an end user smh

It will notify them that there is a problem. They might already know, but there is a chance they are oblivious of any problem.

Edit: or as Robert stated, it could uncover a problem with your phone.

I see that sensorly picked up LTE in Altoona, PA. Just found this out

It's been on the Sponsor maps and Sensorly for about three weeks now. Shentel is now working up in that portion of their coverage now too.

Chambersburg, PA LTE Report ---

Was at the new Longhorn Steakhouse Saturday evening to see how the food would be. New steakhouse, I had to test it out.

The food was superior.

Laid my Galaxy S3 on the table with the speaker off and it vibrated on an incoming e-mail.

When the screen lit up, I had CDMA 1X bars all over the place. I had a 4G indicator too. Yes, Chambersburg is covered with LTE.

The steakhouse is brand new, well built, probably a little tough to penetrate with a cell signal. Not real close to a cell site either.

But I had to keep asking for more napkins to clean up the LTE flowing out of the phone. LTE can be a mess when it gets into your basket of bread on the table.

When my wife was not watching, I ran a speed test. 8 meg download and 7.2 meg upload. It was steady too. How can you not sneak a speed test when you encounter something like this??

Check out Sensorly.com

Chambersburg city is well covered and the LTE is moving out into the rural areas too. It just keeps getting better. Multiple cell sites are converted to the new Network Vision product in Chambersburg with more improvements coming in the area.

Glad you are experiencing LTE for the first time. Chambersburg has been lit up with LTE for a few months now, and as you noted Shentel has been expanding into "more rural" markets in their service area with their NV updates. Have you picked up any new towers or areas that have not been mapped on Sensorly? If not it would be great if you mapped the new areas and reported the towers to Robert.

DCC233 - Yes, I am quite heavily involved with cell site hunting and doing Sensorly mapping. I have done over 90% of the Sensorly mapping around Chambersburg myself. (Also some other towns, cities, Villages, etc) Robert knows me well.

Wish I had more time to do a better job.

And, Saturday evening at the steakhouse sure was not my first time with LTE but maybe I gave that impression. I have LTE almost everywhere thanks to the great Shentel work.

Exactly I ran a speedtest in H Town near the outlets driving by at 65 mph and pulled 22mbps download without breaking a sweat. Just need these people to get closer to Frederick and fill us in!! :(

Frederick is part of the Sprint's DC market, not part of ShenTel's network.

Last night I did some mapping on I-83 S between Harrisburg and York, coming over Reeser's Summit I had LTE and held until I exited in North York, so it appears a tower near Etters is now online.

Again, I have to admit some shock that Etters, PA received LTE coverage before downtown York, PA.. especially because according to Sprint LTE is launched in York.

LTE is "launched" in York, it just is not totally "complete". So many things can complicate an upgrade at a particular site. Delays happen for many reasons. I am positive that Shentel is well aware that central and southern York in particular still needs some upgrades. It will come. Etters may have been a site that was comparatively easy to upgrade, so why not do it if York sites are being difficult. Ahh, and thanks for your Sensorly work on I-83.

Also, in the Sponsor section members can see which Shentel sites are complete, and which ones are In Progress. There are several sites being worked on in the York area at the moment. I imagine they will be live soon,.

The bad news is I still can't connect down in Front Royal and I've seen lifts sitting in front of a few completed sites around Winchester.

Ok I got 4g in Woodbury,MN on highway 94 and I would also like to report that it seems that sprint has compleated there 3g upgrade in western wisconsin. I was in La Crosse, Sparta, Thoma, Black River Falls, Marshfield, Wisconsin Rapids, Wausau, Reilander, Shawano, Merrel, Ashland, and a few more this week and speeds went from a pathetic 50-100k to 500k to 1400 and it looks like they are still working on the network upgrade but it is now faster than my verizon phone in Wisconsin

I was tooling around on Sensorly and noticed someone in that area went totally nuts with mapping. Excellent job! B-)

Thought I'd check here first hoping it might be a S4GU member so I could commend their work.

Cranes in York mean Sprint phone network upgrades, possible interruptions

Sprint is replacing old equipment on the smokestack off Philadelphia Street in the city.

By TIM STONESIFER

Daily Record/Sunday News

Updated: 01/19/2013 06:09:12 PM EST

York, PA -

For better phone service around York, Steve Hagen said, you just need a couple of cranes, some safety belts, and few guys willing to set up shop in a basket suspended 160 feet over the city.

"It's not so bad," he said, angling his head back for a better view. Then, chuckling: "You just wouldn't want to fall."

The work along West Philadelphia Street -- at the former Met-Ed steam plant -- is part of a push by Sprint to upgrade its network, according to Tom Whitaker, vice president of operations for Virginia-based Shentel. Those upgrades include replacing old copper cable with fiber optics, he said.

"The signal is stronger, more powerful and will provide better coverage," said Whitaker.

Shentel is in the process of merging the Sprint and Nextel networks in much of the mid-Atlantic, Whitaker said, "smashing them together" at more than 500 locations to create one, stronger phone network. That work is about halfway complete, he said, and is taking place at both standard cell towers and other sites, like the smokestack in York, where antennas are placed. The upgrade will mean 3G service is replaced with 4G, he said.

"We're basically putting up brand new equipment," he said.

Dave Keech, a broker with Rock Real Estate, said the building and smokestack belong to York-based Space Leasing Inc. The former steam company building is about 28,000 square feet, he said, and houses several businesses. Crews are currently working to put in a CrossFit gym, expected soon, he said.

"They're moving in equipment now," he said.

Whitaker asked for patience, as crews work. There could be some minor network disruptions, he said.

"They're impossible to avoid," he said. "But when we're done, you'll have a much better performing network."

For Hagen and his crew, there are other rewards. He smiled at the group's workspace, suspended dizzyingly above.

"When you're up there like that... the view," he said, shaking his head. "It's pretty nice."

I've notice that when I run speed test where it says network type it says cellular but doesn't say LTE. I have an iPhone 5 and I have LTE signal where Iive any thoughts?
iPhones say cellular no matter what technology it's connected to.

    • I'm currently typing this from a bullet train headed from Tokyo to Osaka. Using a roaming eSIM rather than T-Mobile as it's a lot cheaper, but I'll start with T-Mobile's roaming experience. Since I have a business line, I can't add data packs online, so I'm just using the 256 kbps baseline service you get by default. That service runs on Softank 4G. SoftBank has a well-built-out LTE network though, with plenty of B41, falling back to B1/3/8 as needed. 5G roaming from T-Mobile doesn't appear to exist though. I've seen 20+10 MHz B41 when I've looked, generally speaking. WiFi calling works well, and voice calls over LTE work fine too (I forgot to turn WiFi back on after doing some testing, so I expect my bill to be a dollar more next month). I want to say I even got HD voice over the cell network for the VoLTE call I did. I have a bunch of eSIMs and a couple of physical SIMs to try out. I've gotten the eSIMs up and running, but last I checked the physical SIM wasn't working even after activation so I'll run through eSIMs for the moment and update this thread with pSIM info and details on not-Tokyo in the coming days. First off, there's US Mobile's complimentary East Asia eSIM (5GB) that I grabbed before my unlimited plan Stateside expired. That SIM uses SIM Club, routing through Singapore, running on SoftBank LTE and 5G. I've seen 40 MHz n77, as well as 10x10 n28, and have seen download speeds in excess of 200 Mbps with uploads of more than 50 Mbps, though typical speeds are slower. Routing is via Equinix/Packet.net. 5G coverage is rather spotty, but LTE is plenty fast enough; either my phone doesn't want to use the 5G band combos that have more coverage or 5G coverage is just spottier here than in the US (at least on T-Mibile). Latency is as low as 95ms to sites in Singapore (usually closer to 120ms), which is pretty great considering the 3300 mi between Tokyo and Singapore. Next there's Ubigi. It also routes through Singapore via Transatel (despite being owned by NTT), and sites on top of NTT docomo's network. I didn't see NTT 5G in Tokyo when I tested it, but since then I've seen 10x10 n28, and have seen B1/B3/B19 on the LTE side. So far it's not the fastest thing out there, but I'm guessing coverage will be a little better...or maybe not. This was $17 for 10GB. Latency is a bit higher to Singapore, but still under 150ms it seems. Then there's Airalo, which was the cheapest when I bought it at $9 for 10GB. It also routes through Singapore (on Singtel), but on my S24 I have my pick of KDDI (au) or SoftBank. KDDI has extensive B41 coverage and I've seen 20+20 with UL CA. While waiting for the train at HND Terminal 3 (Keikyu line) I hit 250+ Mbps down and 10+ Mbps up...over LTE...with pretty respectable latency numbers (not much above 100ms). This is in adition to supporting SoftBank, also on LTE (my S24 defaulted to KDDI, while my wife's Pixel 8 defaulted to SoftBank and didn't seem to want to connect to KDDI). Of the various carriers mentioned, I'd say this was the best pick, though prices have bumped back up to $18 for the 10GB plan...but it's probably still what I'd pick if I had to pick just one carrier. Then there's Saily, which uses Truphone out of Hong Kong. I haven't used this as much, as I only grabbed 3GB for $7. It runs on NTT but doesn't seem to have 5G access and doesn't seem to have as good speeds. Yes, Hong Kong is way closer to Japan, but latency didn't seem to be any better, at ~150ms. In all cases, I've had reception even in train tunnels and even at high speed on the bullet train, on all three carriers I've tried (I don't think I'll be able to play with a Rakuten SIM, which is rather disappointing). There have been cases where service has degraded, but it looks like you'd have reasonable cell service no matter which of the big three carriers you picked...and since T-Mobile roams on one of them, that's good enough if you're content to buy day passes.
    • https://www.phonearena.com/news/t-mobile-older-rate-plan-prices-june_id157821 We're on Sprint Max for our seven phone/two Apple Watch (with Cellular) family plan... Because it doesn't make sense to switch to anything else, especially if we can't even finance all of our devices. Some of you may recall that T-Mobile suddenly cut our credit limit to $1,500 (which is barely more than one iPhone 15 Pro) with no notice at all. I escalated it to the Office of the CEO and was told to pound sand, even though I have 800+ Credit as a longtime customer and was suddenly being treated as a deadbeat. I ultimately upgraded my three iPhone lines directly through Apple and they're Unlocked. I haven't bothered to check on whether my Credit Limit has updated, but I don't plan on upgrading them through T-Mobile again. I guess we'll find out if "Sprint Max" counts as "older" soon enough.
