Sprint 4G Rollout Updates

Wednesday, September 5, 2012 - 7:45 AM MDT

S4GRU has received a tip that Network Vision was spotted underway in the Austin metro area. We were able to send out a core member to verify. We are happy to report that Sprint is indeed under way with Network Vision/LTE deployment in the Austin market.

S4GRU Member ATX4G first reported the work at the site. Later S4GRU Member boomerbubba, went out to verify for this article. While at Site #SA14XC087, Boomerbubba was able to actually talk with one of the field techs working at the site, and offered this report:

This tower is definitely under active construction for NV. These guys are installing new panels and stuff. I chatted with one guy from the crew, who said they were a subcontractor working for Ericsson on 180 sites in the area. He confirmed that there will be new panels, remote radios up top, fiber run up the tower, etc. According to him, this tower will be live with 4G in a week. Actually, he said, "You'll have 4G in a week," which I take to mean the LTE signal will be ready for acceptance testing by somebody up the project chain.

There you go. Verification of the first Austin site. Most likely, there are many more currently under active deployment all around greater Austin at this moment. We also reported this weekend more activity in the Austin market with a new site at Ft. Hood Medical Center.

It looks like the Austin market is no longer being delayed and back on track with an active deployment. The original Network Vision schedule had work starting in the Austin Metro Area in June. So, it appears like it is starting 2-1/2 months later than originally planned. So perhaps we can expect an end of November launch and a January/February completion? By the end of September, they should be hitting their stride and we can better evaluate then. Stay tuned.

thank you sooo much guys.

i was debating to get the ip5 with sprint or not. This confirms it. I tried the ip4s with sprint but the 3g was toooo slow. cant wait for unlimted data at a good speed. Bye bye ATT after so many years

anyone know of towers near benwhite and s 1st/ soco

I show a tower on my NetMonitor App at aprox. James Casey St. and Ben White Tower ID = 95 01778

--------

I used the app around nooish today near the tower reported above at the ben white & Frontier Trail area and the mentioned tower did not show on my map. It could be turned off or something while its being worked on. There were no workers on site, but the gate was unlocked and ajar.

i'm learning that there are a ton more sprint towers than what sprint website and cellreception.com are listing. most tmobile sites have sprint antennas on them. they did ground work on the tower near duval and research last week. i drove by tonight and there are now some new antennas up top. the waters park site is a lte site but it's still not live yet. anyone have any dates as to when they will turn one on? i cant wait to see the 4g icon on my galaxy s3.

Never trust a worker on site for any reliable information like, "in a week"! The best he can offer is to confirm he is working on the Sprint system. I'll venture it won't be until October till it's live.

P.S. It's been over two weeks now, and I don't read where anyone has commented, "Awesome, LTE service from Sprint in Austin." lol

network.sprint.com does not list all Sprint sites. Only the Sprint sites that have received or will receive maintenance upgrades in a six month rolling window.

Anyone know about the status of the tower on Prairie Ln. just south of La Frontera? We're about to move into the new subdivision out there and we can see that tower from our house. Sprint's web site lists it as getting data speed/capacity upgrades within six months and the voice upgrade already done.

ok guys, i posted this in another link, thought i'd share it here. i drove to I-35 / 620 area and started logging. i finally saw the 4G icon light up on my phone! kinda wished it said 4G LTE but oh well. anyways I drove around a little and did some logging on sensorly. the tower is active but speeds are low, similiar to 3G. I guess they are still testing it out. The tower is close to round rock hospital. http://sensorly.com/...t/lte_310sprint

LTE confirmed and measured today near La Frontera: 50ms ping, 12904 kbps down, 4736 kbps up.

This was at the corner of FM1325 and 45 toll road.

i sure hope we are still in the testing phase. at&t on an iPhone5 hit 58Mbps on a speedtest. anyone know how to upload pics? i have a few of the crew adding LTE antennas to the top of the tower at 1st/slaughter today.

In regards to ATX4Gs comments about 58Mbsp. About 2 months ago I was at an AT&T store checking out their 4G speeds. They got about 15Mbps down at the store. He said when they were right next to a tower in Bee Caves they got 45 Mbsp down.

I have been a lifetime Sprint customer and hope to get similar results on my EVO 4G LTE phone. On my old EVO 4G I got 10Mbsp on WiMax in the Arboretum so I am optimistic about LTE.

Those speed tests also vary a lot depending on the server you use. I have had best results, many times better, using servers in Dallas and not Austin where I live.

Just found some 4G LTE on West Louis Henna right at Mopac and 45. I stopped the car and did some speed tests. Had Sensorly going, too.http://i.imgur.com/5KHak.pngCan't wait until we get coverage all over town!

Nice, that's right in my new neighborhood. However, your screenshot shows that your wifi is turned on...?

hey guys, i found some lte in south austin, it's concentrated around a sprint store and the signal is very weak. any chance this is coming from a lte hotspot device inside the store? none of the nearby towers or rooftops have any lte work done. i know where most of the towers are and know which towers are being worked on. freaked me out when i saw the 4g icon. i mapped it on sensorly http://www.sensorly.com/map/4G/US/USA/Sprint/lte_310sprint

I didn't take the screenshot until I got home. The icons on the left show that the speed tests were done over the mobile network.

No matter which wireless carrier, LTE performance is very signal strength dependent. Even AT&T.

When you hear about these 30-50Mbps LTE download speeds, it is with a very strong signal near a site. Sprint LTE maxes out around 37.5Mbps download. You will occasionally hear about speeds greater than 37.5Mbps Sprint LTE speeds, but these are likely caused by error from the speed test software, as they exceed the theoretical maximum for a 5x5 LTE carrier.

I have gotten 4g symbol at I35/hesters crossing, and coming out of down town by Cesar chavez/Mopac, both times speedtest.net has failed to run a full test. I finally got one to run to completion today and i35 and hesters crossing, but it was only 1.2 down and dont recall the upload, and it didnt save the record.....

The above speed, I got near the

Chuck E. Cheese

502 W Ben White Blvd, Austin, TX 78704

Not sure, if this the same signal that some of the members have found around south Austin.

More and more are popping up around Austin each day.

I have not had any reliable signal in the mapped area of 290 and Mopac but am getting good signal on S. Lamar.

Anytime I drive anywhere I run Sensorly App to find any new hits.
